A miniature 1/4-inch diameter 24-pin plug and receptacle

Miniature plug and receptacle, which eliminates the need for permanent fixed leads, is used on wind-tunnel force balances, in the interface connections of microelectronic modular assemblies, and in electric and electronic systems where subsystems must be removed or interchanged.

Increasing the response of PIN photodiodes to the ultraviolet

Solid state device uses sapphire windows and avoids coatings which absorb ultraviolet radiation and ultimately alter detector geometry. Ultimate solution for ultraviolet response is geometry with maximum peripheral area and horizontal field structure to draw out photon induced current carriers.

Adding through-bolt holes to pin-fin cold plates

Spot-welding technique is less expensive than secondary-brazing and electron-beam methods. With procedure, standard plates can be modified in quantity for various mounting configurations without need for special tooling.

Development of far infrared attenuation to measure electron densities in cw pin discharge lasers

A two beam attenuation technique was devised to measure electron densities 10 to the 9th power to 10 to the 11th power cm/3 resolved to 1 cm, in a near atmospheric COFFEE laser discharge, using 496 micrometer and 1,220 micrometer radiations from CH3F, optically pumped by a CO2 laser. A far infrared generator was developed which was suitable except for a periodic intensity variation in FIR output deriving from frequency variation of the pump radiation.

Repairing pin-fin cold plates

Inexpensive technique avoids high temperatures that deform thin stainless steel plates. Because repair disks have small diameters, repaired area can sustain greater loads that larger unsupported areas of faceplate.

Small-signal gain diagnostic measurements in a flowing CO2 pin discharge laser

Small-signal gain diagnostic measurements were conducted on closed loop, high power, carbon dioxide laser to assess the coupling between gas flow velocity and resonator saturation. Parameters investigated included optical cavity and discharge power. Results of gain measurements within and downstream of the excitation volume are presented for a laser gas composition He:N2:CO2 of 10:7:1 at 90 torr. The gain at constant discharge power was observed to be dependent upon discharge power level and time. An important result of this study is that the effects of gain swept downstream of the discharge region must be considered in the resonator design if efficient extraction of stored optical energy is desired.

Load-Displacement Measurement on Pin-Loaded Specimens

Tubes apply as displacement is registered by long armed, double-cantilever gage. Sharp points at ends of arms protrude through holes in tube walls and contact center of area of load applications. Method was devised for determining load point displacement accurately. No extraneous displacement fraction is present in measurement, and data-correction procedures are unnecessary.

Repairing Loose Connector Pins

In repair procedure, hypodermic needle applies epoxy adhesive in and behind cavity containing damaged locking finger. Damaged connector does not have to be demated or removed from harness to apply epoxy.

Supports for Wires Soldered to Pins

Stress concentrations reduced by reorienting wires. New solder-joint configuration provides support for part of wire most susceptible to damage from handling or vibration part next to solder joint. Reversal of wire and heat-shrinkable tubing reduce stress in this region.

Channelized coplanar waveguide pin-diode switches

Three different types of p-i-n diode, reflective CPW switches are presented. The first two switches are the series and the shunt mounted diode switches. Each has achieved greater than 15 dB of isolation over a broad bandwidth. The third switch is a narrow band, high isolation switched filter which has achieved 19 dB of isolation. Equivalent circuits and measured performance for each switch is presented.

Pinning, flow and plastic deformation of flux vortices in high T(sub c) superconductors

In high temperature superconductor (HTSC) materials the vortices are highly mobile and flexible. This is reflected in different models of melt of a vortex lattice. Another aspect of the problem is stressed: an easy nucleation and high mobility of dislocations in the vortex lattice. Some models of plastic deformation of vortex lattice are considered as a result of its interaction with a real crystal structure. Depinning is interpreted as yield of plastic flow is vortex medium. Effect of macroscopic defects in crystal structures (pores, inclusions, grain and domain boundaries) is being considered in detail. Available experimental facts on magnetization and a critical current in HTSC and conventional superconductors are discussed from the points of view of depinning to vortices vs. plastic flow of vortices vs. plastic flow of vortices medium.
