Temperature-Dependent Carrier Extraction and the Effects of Excitons on Emission and Photovoltaic Performance in Cs0.05FA0.79MA0.16Pb(I0.83Br0.17)3 Solar Cells

The photovoltaic parameters of triple cation perovskite [Cs0.05FA0.79MA0.16Pb(I0.83Br0.17)3] solar cells are investigated focusing on the electro-optical properties and differences in performance at low and high temperatures. The signature of a parasitic barrier to carrier extraction is observed at low temperatures, which results in a loss of performance at T < 200 K. Intensity-dependent measurements indicate extraction across this parasitic interface is limited by a combination of the exciton binding energy and thermionic emission. However, the photovoltaic performance of the device is recovered at low intensity - where the photocarrier generation rate threshold is lower than the thermionic extraction rate. Loss of solar cell performance is also observed to be strongly correlated to an increase in photoluminescence intensity, indicating inhibited carrier extraction results in strong radiative recombination and that these systems do not appear to be limited by significant thermally activated non-radiative processes. Evidence of limited carrier extraction due to excitonic effects is also observed with a strong anti-correlation in photoluminescence and carrier extraction observed at lower temperatures.

GaAs (AlGaAs)/CuInSe2 tandem solar cells. Technology status and future directions

Mechanically stacked, high efficiency, lightweight, and radiation resistant photovoltaic cells based on a GaAs thin film top and CuInSe2 thin film bottom cells were developed, and are considered one of the most promising devices for planar solar array applications. The highest efficiency demonstrated so far using the 4 sq cm design is 23.1 pct. AM0, one sun efficiency when measured in four-terminal configuration. The current status of the GaAs(AlGaAs)/CuInSe2 tandem cell program is presented and future directions that will lead to cell efficiencies higher than 26 pct. Air Mass Zero (AM0). A new 8 sq cm cell design developed for a two terminal and voltage matched configuration to minimize wiring complexity is discussed. Optimization of the GaAs structure for a higher end-of-life performance and further improvement of tandem cells by utilizing AlGaAs as an top absorber are described. Results of environmental tests conducted with these thin film GaAs/CuInSe2 tandem cells are also summarized.

Indium phosphide solar cells for laser power beaming applications

Lasers can be used to transmit power to photovoltaic cells. Solar cell efficiencies are enhanced significantly under monochromatic light, and therefore a laser beam of proper wavelength could be a very effective source of illumination for a solar array operating at very high efficiencies. This work reviews the modeling studies made on indium phosphide solar cells for such an application. These cells are known to be very radiation resistant and have a potential for high efficiency. Effects of cell series resistance, laser intensity, and temperature on cell performance have been discussed.

Dust removal from solar cells

A solar panel cleaning device includes a solar panel having a plurality of photovoltaic cells arranged in rows and embedded in the solar panel with space between the rows. A transparent dielectric overlay is affixed to the solar panel. A plurality of electrode pairs each of which includes an upper and a lower electrode are arranged on opposite sides of the transparent dielectric and are affixed thereto. The electrodes may be transparent electrodes which may be arranged without concern for blocking sunlight to the solar panel. The solar panel may be a dielectric and its dielectric properties may be continuously and spatially variable. Alternatively the dielectric used may have dielectric segments which produce different electrical field and which affects the wind "generated."

Computational Modeling of Photovoltaic Mini-Modules Undergoing Accelerated Stress Testing

A finite element model of a four-cell photovoltaic mini-module was developed and compared to experimental results from an accelerated stress test protocol in order to validate that computational models can accurately represent their physical counterparts when subjected to mechanical loading and to assess mini-module representativeness against full scale photovoltaic modules. Deflected shapes across the simulated mini-modules were compared to measured mini-module shapes when subjected to various pressure loads. Displaced mini-module shape results constrained to the experimental protocols of 0.4 mm and 1.1 mm of displacement at the mini-module center were compared to experimental results of full-size modules subjected to module qualification test load levels of 1.0 kPa and 2.4 kPa, to assess if the bending of mini-modules was representative of full-sized modules under the load. Temperature cycling was incorporated into the model to simulate the impacts of stress due to thermal expansion of the backsheet and cells. A preliminary uncertainty analysis was performed to show how variations in material properties and geometric parameters change the simulation results.

Diffusion welding of Cassegrainian concentrator cell stack assemblies

Development of a procedure to join the components of the Cassegrainian concentrator photovoltaic cell stack assembly was studied. Diffusion welding was selected as the most promising process, and was concentrated on exclusively. All faying surfaces were coated with silver to promote welding. The first phase of the study consisted of developing the relationship between process parameters and joint strength using silver plated steel samples and an isostatic pressure system. In the second phase, mockups of the cell stack assembly were welded in a hot isostatic press. Excellent joint strength was achieved with parameters of 350 C and 10 ksi, but the delicate GaAs component could not survive the welding cycle without cracking. The tendency towards cracking was found to be affected by both temperature and pressure. Further work will be required in the future to solve this problem.

Performance Modelling and Yearlong Outdoor Degradation Analysis of a GaAs//Si Tandem Module

Silicon-based tandem photovoltaic cells and modules are forecasted to enter mass production around the year 2026. Previous research efforts on tandem photovoltaic technology have focused heavily on increasing cell efficiencies. However, for successful large-scale deployment of tandem modules, reliability and long-term durability will be equally important. Outdoor performance data beyond the one-year mark enable sophisticated degradation analysis and help build confidence in the reliability and durability of this new technology.

1.1 eV GaInAs Cell Development for Dual-Use Solar and 1070 nm Laser Power Converters

Dual-use photovoltaic cells can receive solar and laser power simultaneously to generate current, an application relevant to space and terrestrial industries. This study investigates two concepts of solar cells optimized for dual-use 1070 nm laser and solar power conversion, a single-junction and triple-junction cell. The cell designs are based upon the 3- junction inverted metamorphic solar cell, previously shown highly efficient for solar conversion. Because it is closely bandgap-tuned for a 1070 nm laser, the 1 eV bottom junction is incorporated into each of the two designs, making its development key to the success of both concepts. However, each design requires some modification for efficient dual use. The single-junction device requires optimization to reduce short wavelength absorption of the broad solar spectrum. In both devices, the graded buffer layers in the GaInAs cell affect the cell's performance by reducing threading dislocations in the active junction. However, the buffer in the three-junction device also acts as a lateral transport layer and so affects the fill factor depending on its sheet resistance. By varying the buffer thickness, we demonstrate a direct relationship between buffer thickness and sheet resistance reduction, while considering implications to open-circuit voltages. We also performed resistance modeling to determine the optimal grid spacing and thickness of the grid fingers to minimize losses due to sheet resistance and grid shading. Efficiency data for a one junction GaInAs cell demonstrates a laser conversion efficiency of 38% at 1070 nm wavelength without an anti-reflection coating.

Better Back Contacts for Solar Cells on Flexible Substrates

Improved low-resistance, semitransparent back contacts, and a method of fabricating them, have been developed for solar photovoltaic cells that are made from thin films of I-III-VI2 semiconductor materials on flexible, high-temperatureresistant polyimide substrates or superstrates. The innovative aspect of the present development lies in the extension, to polyimide substrates or superstrates, of a similar prior development of improved low-resistance, semitransparent back contacts for I-III-VI2 solar cells on glass substrates or superstrates. A cell incorporating this innovation can be used either as a stand-alone photovoltaic device or as part of a monolithic stack containing another photovoltaic device that utilizes light of longer wavelengths.
