Rational design of Lewis base molecules for stable and efficient inverted perovskite solar cells

Lewis base molecules that bind undercoordinated lead atoms at interfaces and grain boundaries (GBs) are known to enhance the durability of metal halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Using density functional theory calculations, we found that phosphine-containing molecules have the strongest binding energy among members of a library of Lewis base molecules studied herein. Experimentally, we found that the best inverted PSC treated with 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane (DPPP), a diphosphine Lewis base that passivates, binds, and bridges interfaces and GBs, retained a power conversion efficiency (PCE) slightly higher than its initial PCE of ~23% after continuous operation under simulated AM1.5 illumination at the maximum power point and at ~40°C for >3500 hours. DPPP-treated devices showed a similar increase in PCE after being kept under open-circuit conditions at 85°C for >1500 hours.

Power and Efficiency Optimized in Traveling-Wave Tubes Over a Broad Frequency Bandwidth

A traveling-wave tube (TWT) is an electron beam device that is used to amplify electromagnetic communication waves at radio and microwave frequencies. TWT's are critical components in deep space probes, communication satellites, and high-power radar systems. Power conversion efficiency is of paramount importance for TWT's employed in deep space probes and communication satellites. A previous effort was very successful in increasing efficiency and power at a single frequency (ref. 1). Such an algorithm is sufficient for narrow bandwidth designs, but for optimal designs in applications that require high radiofrequency power over a wide bandwidth, such as high-density communications or high-resolution radar, the variation of the circuit response with respect to frequency must be considered. This work at the NASA Glenn Research Center is the first to develop techniques for optimizing TWT efficiency and output power over a broad frequency bandwidth (ref. 2). The techniques are based on simulated annealing, which has the advantage over conventional optimization techniques in that it enables the best possible solution to be obtained (ref. 3). Two new broadband simulated annealing algorithms were developed that optimize (1) minimum saturated power efficiency over a frequency bandwidth and (2) simultaneous bandwidth and minimum power efficiency over the frequency band with constant input power. The algorithms were incorporated into the NASA coupled-cavity TWT computer model (ref. 4) and used to design optimal phase velocity tapers using the 59- to 64-GHz Hughes 961HA coupled-cavity TWT as a baseline model. In comparison to the baseline design, the computational results of the first broad-band design algorithm show an improvement of 73.9 percent in minimum saturated efficiency (see the top graph). The second broadband design algorithm (see the bottom graph) improves minimum radiofrequency efficiency with constant input power drive by a factor of 2.7 at the high band edge (64 GHz) and increases simultaneous bandwidth by 500 MHz.

Blading Phase–Pure Formamidinium–Alloyed Perovskites for High–Efficiency Solar Cells with Low Photovoltage Deficit and Improved Stability

Currently, blade-coated perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with high power conversion efficiencies (PCEs), i.e. greater than 20%, normally employ methylammonium lead tri-iodide with a sub-optimal bandgap. Alloyed perovskites with formamidinium (FA) cation have narrower bandgap and thus enhance device photocurrent. However, FA-alloyed perovskites show low phase stability and high moisture sensitivity. Here, we report that incorporating 0.83 molar percent organic halide salts (OHs) into the perovskite inks enables phase-pure, highly crystalline FA-alloyed perovskites with extraordinary optoelectronic properties. Here, the OH molecules modulate the crystal growth, enhance the phase stability, passivate ionic defects at the surface and/or grain boundaries, and enhance the moisture stability of the perovskite film. We demonstrate a high efficiency of 22.0% under 1 sun illumination for blade-coated PSCs with an open-circuit voltage of 1.18 V, corresponding to a very small voltage deficit of 0.33 V, and significantly improved operational stability with 96% of the initial efficiency retained under one sun illumination for 500 hours.

Photochemical Decomposition of Y‐Series Non‐Fullerene Acceptors Is Responsible for Degradation of High‐Efficiency Organic Solar Cells

Abstract Organic photovoltaic cells that employ Y‐series non‐fullerene acceptors (NFAs) have recently achieved impressive power‐conversion efficiencies (>18%). To fulfill their commercial promise, it is important to quantify their operational lifetimes and understand their degradation mechanisms. In this work, the spectral‐dependent photostability of films and solar cells comprising several Y‐series acceptors and the donor polymer PM6 is investigated systematically. By applying longpass filters during aging, it is shown that UV/near‐UV photons are responsible for the photochemical decomposition of Y‐series acceptors; this degradation is the primary driver of early solar cell performance losses. Using mass spectrometry, the vinylene linkage between the core and electron‐accepting moieties of Y‐series acceptors is identified as the weak point susceptible to cleavage under UV‐illumination. Employing a series of device characterization, along with numerical simulations, the efficiency losses in organic photovoltaic cells are attributed to the formation of traps, which reduces charge extraction efficiency and facilitates non‐radiative recombination as the Y‐series acceptors degrade. This study provides new insights for molecular degradation of organic photovoltaic absorber materials and highlights the importance of future molecular design and strategies for improved solar cell stability.

Regiospecific Incorporation of Acetylene Linker in High‐Electron Mobility Dimerized Acceptors for Organic Solar Cells with High Efficiency (18.8%) and Long 1‐Sun Lifetime (> 5000 h)

Abstract The commercialization of organic solar cells (OSCs) requires both high power conversion efficiency (PCE) and long‐term stability. However, the lifetime of the OSCs containing small‐molecule acceptors (SMA) should be significantly enhanced. In this study, a series of planarity‐controlled is developed, high electron mobility dimerized SMAs (DSMAs) and realize OSCs with high‐performance (PCE = 18.8%) and high‐stability ( t 80% lifetime = 5380 h under 1‐Sun illumination). An acetylene linker with a planar triple bond is designed for dimerization of SMA units to afford the high backbone planarity necessary to achieve high crystallinity and electron mobility. To further engineer the molecular conformation and electron mobility of the DSMAs, different regioisomers of a Y‐based SMA are dimerized to yield three regioisomerically distinct DSMAs, denoted as DYA‐I, DYA‐IO, and DYA‐O, respectively. It is found that the crystallinity, electron mobility, and glass transition temperature of the DSMAs gradually increase in the order of DYA‐O, DYA‐IO, and DYA‐I, which, in turn, enhance the PCE and device stability of the resulting OSCs; DYA‐O (PCE = 16.45% and t 80% lifetime = 3337 h) < DYA‐IO (PCE = 17.54% and t 80% lifetime = 4255 h) < DYA‐I (PCE = 18.83% and t 80% lifetime = 5380 h).

Template-Assisted Growth of High-Quality α-Phase FAPbI 3 Crystals in Perovskite Solar Cells Using Thiol-Functionalized MoS 2 Nanosheets

Formamidinium lead iodide (FAPI) has gained attention for hybrid perovskite solar cell (PSC) applications due to its enhanced stability and narrow bandgap. However, a significant challenge remains in inducing and stabilizing the elusive perovskite “black phase”—photoactive cubic α-FAPI—as the relatively bulky FA + cations tend to favor the thermodynamically stable nonphotoactive “yellow phase”. Here, in this study, we present a templated growth strategy employing thiol-functionalized MoS 2 nanosheets as templates. By introduction of 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA)-functionalized MoS 2 as a growth template, precise control over crystal formation was achieved, favoring the growth of high-quality α-FAPI films. These advanced templated films exhibited substantial improvements in charge transport properties, efficient light absorption, and enhanced charge extraction. As a result, the PSCs achieved a significantly enhanced power conversion efficiency (PCE) compared to the nontemplated control device, increasing from 20.6 to 22.5%. The MoS 2 -incorporated device also demonstrated excellent shelf stability, maintaining 91% of the initial PCE even after 1600 h of storage without device encapsulation.

Pseudo-bilayer architecture enables high-performance organic solar cells with enhanced exciton diffusion length

Solution-processed organic solar cells (OSCs) are a promising candidate for next-generation photovoltaic technologies. However, the short exciton diffusion length of the bulk heterojunction active layer in OSCs strongly hampers the full potential to be realized in these bulk heterojunction OSCs. Herein, we report high-performance OSCs with a pseudo-bilayer architecture, which possesses longer exciton diffusion length benefited from higher film crystallinity. This feature ensures the synergistic advantages of efficient exciton dissociation and charge transport in OSCs with pseudo-bilayer architecture, enabling a higher power conversion efficiency (17.42%) to be achieved compared to those with bulk heterojunction architecture (16.44%) due to higher short-circuit current density and fill factor. A certified efficiency of 16.31% is also achieved for the ternary OSC with a pseudo-bilayer active layer. Our results demonstrate the excellent potential for pseudo-bilayer architecture to be used for future OSC applications.

A ten-stage electrostatic depressed collector for improving klystron efficiency.

A ten-stage electrostatic depressed collector, designed with the aid of an analog computer, was tested on a 1-kW CW 750-MHz klystron. Excellent correlation was achieved between computed and measured performance under varying conditions of RF drive. At full RF power output approximately 60 per cent of the spent beam energy was recovered by use of the depressed collector. The net power conversion efficiency of the tube was raised from its undepressed value of 54.3 per cent to approximately 70.9 per cent. At one-half full power output, a collector efficiency of 70 per cent was measured. At zero RF power output collector efficiency was 80 per cent. To achieve these results it was necessary to install a small focusing coil between the final drift tube and the collector. No spurious oscillations or instabilities were detected when collector depression was employed, nor was electron backstreaming increased significantly. Intentional short circuiting of adjacent collector electrode pairs was shown to cause only minor degradation in collector performance.

Unidirectional Sidechain Engineering to Construct Dual‐Asymmetric Acceptors for 19.23 % Efficiency Organic Solar Cells with Low Energy Loss and Efficient Charge Transfer

Abstract Achieving both high open‐circuit voltage ( V oc ) and short‐circuit current density ( J sc ) to boost power‐conversion efficiency (PCE) is a major challenge for organic solar cells (OSCs), wherein high energy loss ( E loss ) and inefficient charge transfer usually take place. Here, three new Y‐series acceptors of mono‐asymmetric asy‐YC11 and dual‐asymmetric bi‐asy‐YC9 and bi‐asy‐YC12 are developed. They share the same asymmetric D 1 AD 2 (D 1 =thieno[3,2‐ b ]thiophene and D 2 =selenopheno[3,2‐ b ]thiophene) fused‐core but have different unidirectional sidechain on D 1 side, allowing fine‐tuned molecular properties, such as intermolecular interaction, packing pattern, and crystallinity. Among the binary blends, the PM6 : bi‐asy‐YC12 one has better morphology with appropriate phase separation and higher order packing than the PM6 : asy‐YC9 and PM6 : bi‐asy‐YC11 ones. Therefore, the PM6 : bi‐asy‐YC12‐based OSCs offer a higher PCE of 17.16 % with both high V oc and J sc , due to the reduced E loss and efficient charge transfer properties. Inspired by the high V oc and strong NIR‐absorption, bi‐asy‐YC12 is introduced into efficient binary PM6 : L8‐BO to construct ternary OSCs. Thanks to the broadened absorption, optimized morphology, and furtherly minimized E loss , the PM6 : L8‐BO : bi‐asy‐YC12‐based OSCs achieve a champion PCE of 19.23 %, which is one of the highest efficiencies among these annealing‐free devices. Our developed unidirectional sidechain engineering for constructing bi‐asymmetric Y‐series acceptors provides an approach to boost PCE of OSCs.

High‐Efficiency Organic Solar Cells with Wide Toleration of Active Layer Thickness

Industrial printing production of organic solar cells (OSCs) requires high power conversion efficiency (PCE) with wide toleration of active layer thickness. Herein, high‐efficiency thick‐film OSCs are demonstrated using a polymer fibril network strategy (FNS), which involves a donor polymer (PT2) that can self‐assemble into fibril nanostructure, and two nonfullerene acceptors with different crystalline properties. The fibril network can form a high‐speed hole transport channel and the addition of IDIC as a third component in active layers can improve the electron transport. As a result, the OSCs show high PCEs of ≈12% with wide toleration of active layer thickness (from 100 to 500 nm). The results indicate that FNS is a promising approach for the fabrication of highly efficient thick‐film PSCs, which can facilitate the commercialization of OSCs.

Terpolymer Donor with Inside Alkyl Substituents on Thiophene π ‐Bridges toward Thiazolothiazole A 2 ‐Unit Enables 18.21% Efficiency of Polymer Solar Cells

Abstract PM6 is a widely used D–A copolymer donor in the polymer solar cells (PSCs). Incorporating second electron‐withdrawing (A 2 ) units into PM6 backbone by ternary D–A 1 –D–A 2 random copolymerization strategy is an effective approach to further improve its photovoltaic performance. Here, the authors synthesize the PM6‐based terpolymers by introducing thiazolothiazole as the A 2 units connecting with thiophene π‐bridges attaching alkyl substituent towards the A 2 unit (PMT‐CT) or towards D‐unit (PMT‐FT), and study the effect of the alkyl substituent position on the photovoltaic performance of them. Two terpolymers PMT‐FT‐10 and PMT‐CT‐10 are obtained by incorporating 10% A 2 units in the terpolymers. The film of PMT‐CT‐10 shows slightly up‐shifted highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy levels while better co‐planar structure than that of PMT‐FT‐10. Meanwhile, the PMT‐CT‐10:Y6 blend film exhibits better molecular packing properties, more proper phase separation and more balanced hole and electron mobilities, which are beneficial to more efficient exciton dissociation, efficient charge transport and weaker bimolecular recombination. Consequently, the PMT‐CT‐10 based PSCs obtain the highest power conversion efficiency of 18.21%. The results indicate that side chain position on the thiophene π‐bridges influence the device performance of the terpolymer donors, and PMT‐CT‐10 is a high efficiency polymer donor for the PSCs.

Identifying and Amplifying the Spontaneously Formed Photo‐Charge Contribution in Opaque and Semitransparent Organic Photovoltaics

Abstract Spontaneous photo‐charge (SP) generation within the non‐fullerene (NFA) bulk helps avoid exciton (EX) related loss as compared to the traditional heterojunction route in organic solar cells (OSCs). Unfortunately, the promising SP utilization attracts little attention at this time due to the lack of knowledge on its specific contribution to the photovoltaic performance and rational optimization in high‐efficiency devices. To fill the gap, the NFAs’ SP characteristics are related with their photocurrent loss and power conversion efficiency (PCE) in state‐of‐the‐art materials. Though higher SP population is good for efficient EX utilization, it simultaneously acts as an additional photo‐charge recombination channel. The former can be further enhanced by increasing the NFAs’ crystallinity with preferred lamellar growth, and the latter can be suppressed via electric doping. With the aid of the two‐step optimization strategy, the total photocurrent loss is reduced from 14.4% to 4.8%, accompanying with PCE increment from 16.9% to 18.5%. The SP utilization strategy is finally applied in the semitransparent OSCs (ST‐OSCs), due to its less heterojunction area sensitive photo‐charge generation characteristic. A light utilization efficiency (LUE) is then increased from 3.21% to 3.77%. The findings highlight the pursue of efficient SP utilization as a new design philosophy in future OSCs’ progresses.

Why Perovskite Thermal Stress is Unaffected by Thin Contact Layers

Metal halide perovskite photovoltaics have emerged as a high efficiency, low-cost alternative that can potentially rival or enhance conventional silicon technology. Despite exceptional initial power conversion efficiencies, achieving compliance with international standards and widespread adoption requires further enhancements to their operational stability. Notably, addressing mechanical strain and stress in brittle perovskites has emerged as a pivotal approach to mitigate chemical degradation and improve reliability during thermal cycling. Here, in this study, a popularized strain engineering strategy is investigated in which a high coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) hole transport layer (i.e., PDCBT) is cast onto inorganic perovskite (CsPbI 2 Br) at 100 °C. Contrary to previously published results, the X-ray diffraction (XRD):Sin 2 ψ and substrate curvature measurement techniques show that the hole transport layer has no discernible impact on perovskite strain. The accuracy of the XRD:Sin 2 ψ method for measuring strain is highlighted in contrast to an analysis based on shifts of single XRD peaks which can be influenced by multiple artifacts. The findings in this study are in accordance with mechanics theory: thin layers are unable to induce significant strain changes in perovskite thin films as the force they apply is negligible compared to that applied by a thick and stiff substrate.

Precise synthesis and photovoltaic properties of giant molecule acceptors

Series of giant molecule acceptors DY, TY and QY with two, three and four small molecule acceptor subunits are synthesized by a stepwise synthetic method and used for systematically investigating the influence of subunit numbers on the structure-property relationship from small molecule acceptor YDT to giant molecule acceptors and to polymerized small molecule acceptor PY-IT. Among these acceptors-based devices, the TY-based film shows proper donor/acceptor phase separation, higher charge transfer state yield and longer charge transfer state lifetime. Combining with the highest electron mobility, more efficient exciton dissociation and lower charge carrier recombination properties, the TY-based device exhibits the highest power conversion efficiency of 16.32%. These results indicate that the subunit number in these acceptors has significant influence on their photovoltaic properties. This stepwise synthetic method of giant molecule acceptors will be beneficial to diversify their structures and promote their applications in high-efficiency and stable organic solar cells.

A comparison of 8.415-, 32.0- and 565646-GHz deep space telemetry links

An economic and performance comparison is made of spacecraft telecommunication links at 8.415, 32.0, and 565646 GHz (0.53-micron wavelength) for the return of 3.43 x 10 to the 11th power bits from a Saturn Orbiter/Titan Probe mission in year 2000. Technical performance and costs for both ends of the links are included. Spacecraft antenna or telescope efficiencies, pointing losses, ground-based or Earth-orbiting relay terminals efficiencies, noise temperatures, recurring and nonrecurring engineering, and maintenance and operations costs are modeled. Weather effects, dc-to-RF or laser power conversion efficiencies, gravity and other environment distortions gain reductions, and the cost of pointing and tracking are analyzed. The effort is focused primarily on the microwave frequency links. There are large uncertainties in the cost results, but conclusions indicate that for a mid-1990's launch, the Ka-band system is as cost effective as X-band. The Ka-band system has a data rate advantage as compared to the X-band system for the same dc power input to the spacecraft. The magnitude of the advantage is a complex function of the weather at the DSN stations and the elevation angle of the ground antenna. A simple numerical comparison of the advantage is difficult and curves are provided. The optical frequency link is more costly based on the launch-to-orbit costs for the orbiting terminal. A more detailed study of the optical system is recommended to quantify astrometric tracking benefits and improve the accuracy of the cost estimate.

High‐Performance Fluorinated Fused‐Ring Electron Acceptor with 3D Stacking and Exciton/Charge Transport

Abstract A new fluorinated electron acceptor (FINIC) based on 6,6,12,12‐tetrakis(3‐fluoro‐4‐hexylphenyl)‐indacenobis(dithieno[3,2‐ b ;2 ′ ,3 ′ ‐ d ]thiophene) as the electron‐donating central core and 5,6‐difluoro‐3‐(1,1‐dicyanomethylene)‐1‐indanone as the electron‐deficient end groups is rationally designed and synthesized. FINIC shows similar absorption profile in dilute solution to the nonfluorinated analogue INIC. However, compared with INIC, FINIC film shows red‐shifted absorption, down‐shifted frontier molecular orbital energy levels, enhanced crystallinity, and more ordered molecular packing. Single‐crystal structure data show that FINIC molecules pack into closer 3D “network” motif through H‐bonding and π–π interaction, while INIC molecules pack into incompact “honeycomb” motif through only π–π stacking. Theoretical calculations reveal that FINIC has stronger electronic coupling and more molecular interactions than INIC. FINIC has higher electron mobilities in both horizontal and vertical directions than INIC. Moreover, FINIC and INIC support efficient 3D exciton transport. PBD‐SF/FINIC blend has a larger driving force for exciton splitting, more efficient charge transfer and photoinduced charge generation. Finally, the organic solar cells based on PBD‐SF/FINIC blend yield power conversion efficiency of 14.0%, far exceeding that of the PBD‐SF/INIC‐based devices (5.1%).
