Dissertation Proposal: Innovations in Pulsed Power and Plasma Science Theory Simulation and Experiment

Pulsed power and plasma physics are topics of great study at both Sandia National Laboratories (SNL or Sandia) and the University of New Mexico (UNM). The goal of this research is to further knowledge and understanding of these fields using the resources of both SNL and UNM in three ways. The first way is through the comprehension, application, and testing of theory. Reading and analytically deriving theoretical solutions of problems both real-world and simplified will allow for a fresh perspective and the furthering of the theory. One such theory is Ottinger's generalized theory for voltage measurement in magnetically insulated transmission lines (MITLs). By working through the math, a deeper understanding of the theory is gained from which one may add more physically accurate and/or more detailed physics into the theory. Additionally, understanding the theory lays a good foundation from which one can analyze, test, and compare results to the theory in the following two ways that will advance the fields of pulsed power and plasma physics. The second way is through the modeling and simulation of real-world and simplified problems that utilize and test the afore mentioned theories. Theory can be applied to a simulation domain by using the unstructured time-domain electromagnetic (UTDEM) codes EMPHASIS and EMPIRE as well as the physical modeling software CUBIT, all of which were developed at SNL. Problems such as the modeling and design of the extended MITL on HERMES III, the understanding of space-charge-limited emission from vacuum cathodes, and the interaction between a relativistic electron beam and an ideal gas can all be modeled, simulated, and analyzed with this set of codes. Here the advantage is three-fold. Firstly, theory that describes our understanding of these problems can be put to the test and advanced through iterative simulation and analysis. Secondly, the understanding of these problems will have a positive impact on national security through the advancement of the technological capability of the United States of America. Thirdly, and not unrelated to the prior advantage, is the validation and verification of EMPIRE and EMPHASIS. This segues into the third way, which is through experiment and the comparison of experiment to simulated and theoretical results. Performing experimental comparisons completes the scientific method and grounds all of the work in reality. Being able to physically test theory and simulation is necessary for any real conclusions to be drawn. Another advantage for carrying out experimental work is to advance the physical testing capabilities of SNL. Several systems will be developed and tested through the course of this work that positively impact technological advancement of Sandia National Labs. Lastly, all of the above work will converge to yield a well-rounded perspective that ties the three categories of research together.

Accelerator Real-time Edge AI for Distributed Systems (READS) (Proposal)

Over the last decade, Machine Learning (ML) technologies have slowly made their way into the accelerator community. Rapid advances in recent years in deep learning, particularly reinforcement learning for control system applications and the accessibility of deep learning in embedded hardware, have generated renewed interest and spawned a number of applications. The Fermilab Accelerator Complex, shown in Fig. 1, has provided High Energy Physics (HEP) experiments with proton beams for nearly fifty years. The current focus of the laboratory is its world-class experimental program at the intensity frontier. While increasing beam intensity certainly presents its own challenges, preserving beam size while minimizing beam losses – particles lost through interactions with the beam vacuum pipe – turns out to be, in many ways, the main challenge. The accelerator is controlled via a complex system of hundreds of thousands of devices. Enabling fine tuning and real-time optimization of their parameters using ML methods and stepping beyond experience-based reasoning of human operators are key to the success of future intensity upgrades. Our objective will be to integrate ML into accelerator operations and furthermore, provide an accessible framework, which can also be used by a broad range of other accelerator systems with dynamic tuning needs.

Sensitive Resources Assessment and Forest Analysis for The SSP-2A Parcel and Proposed Oak Ridge Enhanced Technology and Training Center (ORETTC), Oak Ridge, Tennessee

This report summarizes current knowledge of natural and cultural resources associated with potential land use changes within an 81-acre (32.8-hectare) parcel, termed SSP-2A, on the US Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Oak Ridge Reservation (ORR) in Oak Ridge, Tennessee (Figure 1). A primary goal for the work presented here was to evaluate potential impacts to sensitive resources within the SSP-2A parcel that might result from land disturbance and construction of the Oak Ridge Enhanced Technology and Training Center (ORETTC). In addition to on-the-ground surveys of the ORETTC footprint and SSP-2A parcel during summer 2020 (Figure 1), this report leverages historical (pre-1995) and contemporary (1995–present) data from additional sources such as the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC). The individuals who obtained and compiled the data that are presented here are familiar with and routinely assess, manage, and research sensitive resources on the ORR. This report should facilitate more environmentally sound decisions during planning and development of the ORETTC, provide a foundation for further assessment of sensitive and cultural resources associated with the broader SSP-2A parcel (should additional actions take place), and help project managers address regulatory guidance and DOE policy on sustainable development. Those who reference this report must consider that the timing of surveys does not permit complete delineation of resources. Data deficiencies are indicated where possible. Additional surveys may be required to account for seasonal patterns of various threatened and endangered species (e.g., bats), and additional assessment will be required if activities extend beyond the ORETTC site (Figure 2).

Evaluation of Niowave's Proposed Solvent Washing Approach

Niowave, Inc., is a domestic supplier of medical and industrial isotopes from uranium (U) and radium (Ra). The company has recently entered into a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and plans to deploy a superconducting electron accelerator (LINAC) to fission U for molybdenum-99 ( 99 Mo) production without the need for a nuclear reactor or highly enriched uranium (HEU). NNSA provided funding to the Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) to support Niowave in this effort. SRNL evaluated the application of the solvent washing process for Niowave.

Collaborative Proposal: Fire, Dust, Air and Water: Improving Aerosol Biogeochemistry Interactions in ACME

This document describes results from a grant studying the role of fire in the Earth system, as a source of nutrients to land and marine ecosystems. Iron is a nutrient that often limits plant growth in the oceans. Wildfires, as well as the combustion when we are burning fossil fuels, releases iron to the atmosphere that can later be deposited on the oceans, fueling plant growth.

Demonstrate moving-grid multi-turbine simulations primarily run on GPUs and propose improvements for successful KPP-2

The goal of the ExaWind project is to enable predictive simulations of wind farms comprised of many megawatt-scale turbines situated in complex terrain. Predictive simulations will require computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations for which the mesh resolves the geometry of the turbines, capturing the thin boundary layers, and captures the rotation and large deflections of blades. Whereas such simulations for a single turbine are arguably petascale class, multi-turbine wind farm simulations will require exascale-class resources.
