Lattice QCD calculation of the pion generalized parton distribution

We present the results of a Lattice QCD computation of pion generalized parton distribution (GPD), employing perturbative matching up to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO). The computations are based on an ensemble of Nf=2+1 highly improved staggered quarks (HISQ) with a pion mass of 300 MeV and a lattice spacing of 0.04 fm. Centered on the zero-skewness limit, we utilize a recently proposed Lorentz-invariant definition of GPD, which is derived from Lorentz-invariant amplitudes. We analyze and compare these amplitudes in both Breit and non-Breit kinematic frames at comparable momentum transfers, validating their frame-independent nature. To obtain light-cone GPD, we integrate hybrid scheme renormalization with the large momentum effective theory (LaMET). Moreover, we determine the first three iso-vector generalized form factors (GFFs) of the pion using the ratio scheme renormalization and leading-twist factorization, achieving NNLO accuracy.

Chiral rank-$k$ truncations for the multigrid preconditioner of Wilson fermions in lattice QCD

We present a modification to the setup algorithm for the multigrid preconditioner of Wilson fermions in lattice QCD. A larger number of test vectors than that used in conventional multigrid is generated by the smoother. This set of test vectors is then truncated by a singular value decomposition on the chiral components of the test vectors, which are subsequently used to form the prolongation and restriction matrices of the multigrid hierarchy. This modification is demonstrated to improve the convergence of linear equations on an anisotropic lattice with 𝑚𝜋 ≈ 280 MeV from the Hadron Spectrum Collaboration and an isotropic lattice with 𝑚𝜋 ≈ 220 MeV from the MILC Collaboration. The lattice volume dependence of the method is also examined.

Strong coupling in (2+1+1)-flavor QCD

The strong coupling $\alpha_\mathrm{s}$ can be obtained from the static energy as shown in previous lattices studies. For short distances, the static energy can be calculated both on the lattice with the use of Wilson line correlators, and with the perturbation theory up to three loop accuracy with leading ultrasoft log resummation. Comparing the perturbative expression and lattice data allows for precise determination of $\alpha_\mathrm{s}(m_Z)$. We will present preliminary results for the determination of $\alpha_\mathrm{s} {(M_Z)}$ in (2+1+1)-flavor QCD using the configurations made available by the MILC-collaboration with smallest lattice spacing reaching 0.0321~fm.

Spin structure of the proton from global QCD analysis

In this talk we review recent results for spin-dependent parton distribution functions extracted in global QCD analysis of high energy scattering data by the JAM collaboration, including inclusive and semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering, jet and weak boson production in polarised hadron-hadron collisions. In particular, we focus on the determination of the gluon polarisation in the proton, whose sign and magnitude have been the subject of debate recently.

Vector Meson Spectrum from Top-Down Holographic QCD

We elaborate on the brane configuration that gives rise to a QCD-like gauge theory that confines at low energies and becomes scale invariant at the highest energies. In the limit where the rank of the gauge group is large, a gravitational description emerges. For the confined phase, we obtain a vector meson spectrum and demonstrate how a certain choice of parameters can lead to quantitative agreement with empirical data.

First constraints on QCD axion dark matter using James Webb Space Telescope observations

I present the first constraints on QCD axion dark matter using measurements from the James Webb Space Telescope. By utilizing publicly available MIRI and NIRSpec blank-sky observations, originally collected for sky subtraction purposes, I derive strong limits on the axion-photon coupling constant $g_{a \gamma \gamma}$ in the mass range 0.1-4 eV. These constraints improve upon previous studies by more than two orders of magnitude for a range of masses. This analysis underscores the potential of blank-sky observations as a powerful tool for constraining dark matter models and demonstrates how astrophysical missions can be repurposed for particle physics research.

Surface energy from order parameter profile: At the QCD phase transition

The order parameter profile between coexisting confined and plasma regions at the quantum chromodynamic (QCD) phase transition is constructed. The dimensionless combination of the surface energy (Sigma) and the correlation length (Zeta) is estimated to be Sigma Zeta 3 approximately equals 0.8.

Excited-state uncertainties in lattice-QCD calculations of hadron masses and scattering phase shifts

Lattice QCD has historically produced energy results interpretable as either estimates relying on implicit assumptions about asymptotic behavior or one-sided upper bounds. New Lanczos methods providing two-sided bounds with less-restrictive assumptions are introduced and quantified in a high-statistics calculation with unphysical quark masses. Two-sided bounds without spectral assumptions provide sub-percent constraints on the nucleon mass. Other bounds, which assume all states in a given energy window are resolved, provide meaningful two-sided constraints on nucleon-nucleon scattering phase shifts.

Constraints on light QCD and CP-violating axions from the death line of rotation-powered pulsars

For axions that couple to nucleons, the presence of dense nuclear matter can displace the axion from its vacuum minimum, sourcing large field gradients around neutron stars (and, more generally, compact objects). These gradients, which we refer to as axion hair, couple to the local background magnetic field, inducing a large voltage drop near the surface of the star; here, we demonstrate that the presence of axion hair decouples local near-field particle acceleration in the open magnetic field line bundle from the rotational frequency of the pulsar itself. This is significant as the non-observation of old slowly-rotating pulsars is attributed to the fact the rotationally-induced electric fields are not strong enough to sustain $e^\pm$ pair production. In this work, we review the evidence for the existence for `pulsar death', i.e. the threshold at which $e^\pm$ pair production (and thus, by association, coherent radio emission) ceases, and demonstrate using both semi-analytics and particle-in-cell simulations that the existence of axion hair can dramatically extend pulsar lifetimes. We show that the non-observation of extremely old, slowly rotating, pulsars allows for a new probe of light QCD and CP-violating axions. We also demonstrate how the observation of emission from both poles of pulsars with nearly orthogonal rotational and magnetic axes, as seen e.g. in PSR J1906+0746, can be used to set competitive limits on CP-violating axion-nucleon interactions.

Tomography of the rho meson in the QCD instanton vacuum: Transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions

We analyze the rho meson unpolarized and polarized transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMDPDFs) in the instanton liquid model (ILM). The corresponding TMDs in ILM are approximated by a constituent quark beam function in the leading Fock state multiplied by a rapidity-dependent factor resulting from the staple-shaped Wilson lines, for fixed longitudinal momentum, transverse separation, and rapidity. At the resolution of the ILM, all of the rho meson TMDs are symmetric in parton 𝑥 for fixed transverse momentum, and Gaussian-like in the transverse momentum for fixed parton 𝑥. The latter is a direct consequence of the profiling of the quark zero modes in the ILM. The evolved TMDs at higher rapidity using the Collins-Soper kernel, and higher resolution using the renormalization group, show substantial skewness towards low parton 𝑥.

Two- and three-meson scattering amplitudes with physical quark masses from lattice QCD

We study systems of two and three mesons composed of pions and kaons at maximal isospin using four CLS ensembles with 𝑎 ≈ 0.063 fm, including one with approximately physical quark masses. Using the stochastic Laplacian-Heaviside method, we determine the energy spectrum of these systems including many levels in different momentum frames and irreducible representations. Using the relativistic two- and three-body finite-volume formalism, we constrain the two- and three-meson K matrices, including not only the leading 𝑠 wave, but also 𝑝 and 𝑑 waves. By solving the three-body integral equations, we determine, for the first time, the physical-point scattering amplitudes for 3⁢𝜋 + , 3⁢𝐾 + , 𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 + ⁢𝐾 + , and 𝐾 + ⁢𝐾 + ⁢𝜋 + systems. These are determined for total angular momentum 𝐽 𝑃 = 0 − , 1 + , and 2 − . We also obtain accurate results for 2⁢𝜋 + , 𝜋 + ⁢𝐾 + , and 2⁢𝐾 + phase shifts. We compare our results to chiral perturbation theory and to phenomenological fits.

Hadronic Vacuum Polarization for the Muon 𝑔 − 2 from Lattice QCD: Long-Distance and Full Light-Quark Connected Contribution

We present results for the dominant light-quark connected contribution to the long-distance window of the hadronic vacuum polarization (HVP) contribution to the muon 𝑔 − 2 from lattice quantum chromodynamics. Specifically, with a new determination of the lattice scale on MILC’s physical-mass HISQ ensembles, using the Ω− baryon mass, we obtain a result of 𝑎$^{𝑙⁢𝑙,LD}_{𝜇}$⁡(conn) = 400.2⁢(2.3) stat ⁢(3.7) syst ⁢[4.3] total × 10 −10 . Summing this result with our recent determinations of the light-quark connected contributions to the short- and intermediate-distance windows, we obtain a subpercent precision determination of the light-quark-connected contribution to HVP of 𝑎$^{𝑙⁢𝑙}_{𝜇}$⁡(conn) = 655.2⁢(2.3) stat ⁢(3.9) syst ⁢[4.5]total×10 −10 . Finally, as a consistency check, we verify that an independent analysis of the full contribution is in agreement with the sum of individual windows. We discuss our future plans for improvements of our HVP calculations to meet the target precision of the Fermilab 𝑔 − 2 experiment.

String-based parametrization of nucleon GPDs at any skewness: A comparison to lattice QCD

We introduce a string-based parametrization for nucleon quark and gluon generalized parton distributions (GPDs) valid at all skewness values. The conformal moments of the GPDs are expressed as sums of the spin-j nucleon A-form factor and the skewness-dependent spin-j nucleon D-form factor. This representation, which fulfills the polynomiality condition (due to Lorentz invariance) and does not rely on model-specific assumptions, is derived from t-channel string exchanges in anti-de Sitter spaces. The spin-j nucleon D-form factor is closely related to the spin-j nucleon A-form factor. We use the Mellin moments from empirical parton distributions to model the spin-j nucleon A-form factors. Using only five Regge slope parameters, fixed from the electromagnetic and gravitational form factors, our string-based parametrization generates accurate singlet, nonsinglet, isovector, and flavor-separated nucleon quark GPDs, along with symmetric nucleon gluon GPDs from their Mellin-Barnes integral representations. Our isovector nucleon quark GPD is in agreement with existing lattice data. Our string-based parametrization should facilitate the empirical extraction and global analysis of nucleon GPDs in exclusive processes, bypassing the deconvolution challenge.

Three-dimensional imaging of pion using lattice QCD: generalized parton distributions

In this work, we report a lattice calculation of x-dependent valence pion generalized parton distributions (GPDs) at zero skewness with multiple values of the momentum transfer −t. The calculations are based on an N f = 2 + 1 gauge ensemble of highly improved staggered quarks with Wilson-Clover valence fermion. The lattice spacing is 0.04 fm, and the pion valence mass is tuned to be 300 MeV. We determine the Lorentz-invariant amplitudes of the quasi-GPD matrix elements for both symmetric and asymmetric momenta transfers with similar values and show the equivalence of both frames. Then, focusing on the asymmetric frame, we utilize a hybrid scheme to renormalize the quasi-GPD matrix elements obtained from the lattice calculations. After the Fourier transforms, the quasi-GPDs are then matched to the light-cone GPDs within the framework of large momentum effective theory with improved matching, including the next-to-next-to-leading order perturbative corrections, and leading renormalon and renormalization group resummations. We also present the 3-dimensional image of the pion in impact-parameter space through the Fourier transform of the momentum transfer −t.

Extracting scattering amplitudes for arbitrary two-particle systems with one-particle left-hand cuts via lattice QCD

We derive a general formalism that relates the spectrum of two-particle systems in a finite volume to physical scattering amplitudes, taking into account the presence of any left-hand branch cuts due to single-particle exchanges. The method first relates the finite-volume spectrum to an infinite-volume short-range quantity, denoted ${\mathcal{M}}_0$, and then relates the latter to the physical scattering amplitudes via known integral equations. The derivation of both relations is performed using all-orders perturbation theory and is exact up to neglected exponentially suppressed volume dependence. The relations hold for arbitrary two-particle systems with any number of coupled channels, non-identical and non-degenerate particles, and any intrinsic spin.

Resummation for lattice QCD calculation of generalized parton distributions at nonzero skewness

Large-momentum effective theory (LaMET) provides an approach to directly calculate the x-dependence of generalized parton distributions (GPDs) on a Euclidean lattice through power expansion and a perturbative matching. When a parton’s momentum becomes soft, the corresponding logarithms in the matching kernel become non-negligible at higher orders of perturbation theory, which requires a resummation. But the resummation for the off-forward matrix elements at nonzero skewness ξ is difficult due to their multi-scale nature. In this work, we demonstrate that these logarithms are important only in the threshold limit, and derive the threshold factorization formula for the quasi-GPDs in LaMET. We then propose an approach to resum all the large logarithms based on the threshold factorization, which is implemented on a GPD model. We demonstrate that the LaMET prediction is reliable for [−1 + x 0 , −ξ − x 0 ] ∪ [−ξ + x 0 , ξ − x 0 ] ∪ [ξ + x 0 , 1 − x 0 ], where x 0 is a cutoff depending on hard parton momenta. Through our numerical tests with the GPD model, we demonstrate that our method is self-consistent and that the inverse matching does not spread the nonperturbative effects or power corrections to the perturbatively calculable regions.

Towards a general subtraction formula for NNLO QCD corrections to processes at hadron colliders: final states with quarks and gluons

We describe the calculation of integrated subtraction terms in the nested soft-collinear subtraction scheme for hadron collider processes with quarks and gluons, thereby extending the results presented in ref. [1]. Although this extension eventually proves to be straightforward, it requires a more careful treatment of certain collinear limits to achieve a compact and physically-transparent final result. We also show that the cancellation of infrared divergences can be organized in such a way that, once soft contributions are removed, it occurs independently for each of the external partons. We consider these results to be important stepping stones on the way to deriving finite remainders of the integrated subtraction terms for fully-general hadron collider processes in the context of the nested soft-collinear subtraction scheme.
