Welcome to the Eight by six foot Supersonic Wind Tunnel Research Facility located at the NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, OH. This wind tunnel complex is part of NASA's Aerosciences Evaluation and Test Capabilities (AETC) portfolio of testing facilities. Complex hosts two wind tunnels 8 x 6 for supersonic testing and the 9 x 15 for low-speed acoustic testing. Explore the lobby and view the different objects within. Once you are looking at an object you can left click for additional information. All items in lobby are interactive, and can be viewed using the arrow keys and mouse as indicated on the bottom of the video.

In-Space Servicing, Assembly, and Manufacturing has the potential to enable larger-scale and longer-lived infrastructure projects in space. Servicing in particular has the potential to vastly increase the usable lifetimes of satellites, both newly launched and existing. However, some of these servicing tasks require delicate manipulation and, to apply to existing satellites, need to be able to operate on structures that were not designed for servicing and, in some cases, where the exact shape of the structure is not known in advance. For this reason, human-in-the-loop ground-based teleoperation is the only option for some missions. Ground-based teleoperation presents its own difficulties. In addition to the challenge of performing delicate operations in constrained spaces, communication with the servicing platform is subject to a variable time delay on the order of 2-7 seconds, and the only visual feedback comes from camera views with limited situational awareness and viewing angles.

High-performance HVAC solutions are central to residential energy management. A substantial share of these are electric, reversible-cycle systems, with heat pumps representing the largest portion of current and near-term adoption. This review synthesizes peer-reviewed and grey literature on residential space heating and cooling heat pumps. The academic literature is dominated by modeling (73.8%), with limited field measurement (13.1%). Grey literature from United States serve as a supplemental resource providing measured savings. Conversions from electric-resistance heating consistently show the largest site energy reductions, while oil/propane baselines yield moderate savings, and gas baseline scenario often deliver small and region-dependent savings. This study cross-checks the grey literature measured data with simulation data filtered from the ResStock dataset. The comparison indicates a discrepancy between simulations and measured data: simulated site EUIs are typically lower than measured EUIs, but percentage energy savings fall in similar ranges, implying simulations capture directional effects while underestimating energy use. Factors associated with variability and model–measurement differences include system characterization and control representation (e.g., backup heat engagement, thermostat/setpoint strategies, commissioning/installation quality), occupant behavior, weather normalization, metering scope, and envelope characterization. This paper also outlines the proposed methodology for comparing simulation and measured data for heat pumps. It emphasizes the metrics used for comparison and units harmonization, building characteristics matching, and compact metadata are needed for simulations to match measured data. The proposed methodology is expected to improve the credibility of simulated savings as measured evidence grows.

What does materials science look like in the “Age of Artificial Intelligence?” Each material’s domain—synthesis, characterization, and modeling—has a different answer to this question, motivated by unique challenges and constraints. This work focuses on the tremendous potential of autonomous characterization within electron microscopy. We present our recent advancements in developing domain-aware, multimodal models for microscopy analysis capable of describing complex atomic systems. We then address the critical gap between the theoretical promise of autonomous microscopy and its current practical limitations, showcasing recent successes while highlighting the necessary developments to achieve robust, real-world autonomy.
Making Fermi calculations is a way to estimate rough but reliable numbers that enable right reasoning in science and engineering—and a skill that all scientists should practice.
