Performance capabilities and limitations of a fiber optic coupled line scan CRT image recording system were investigated. The test program evaluated the following components: (1). P31 phosphor CRT with EMA faceplate; (2). P31 phosphor CRT with clear clad faceplate; (3). Type 7743 semi-gloss dry process positive print paper; (4). Type 777 flat finish dry process positive print paper; (5). Type 7842 dry process positive film; and (6). Type 1971 semi-gloss wet process positive print paper. Detailed test procedures used in each test are provided along with a description of each test, the test data, and an analysis of the results.

Liquid phase expitaxy was investigated to determine its applicability to fabricating magnetic rare earth garnet films for spacecraft data recording systems. Two mixed garnet systems were investigated in detail: (1) Gd-Y and (2) Eu-Yb-Y. All films were deposited on Gd3Ga5012 substrates. The uniaxial anisotropy of the Gd-Y garnets is primarily stress-induced. These garnets are characterized by high-domain wall mobility, low coercivity and modest anisotropy. Characteristic length was found to be relatively sensitive to temperature. The Eu-Yb-Y garnets exhibit acceptable mobilities, good temperature stability and reasonable quality factors. The uniaxial anisotropy of these garnets is primarily growth-induced. The system is well suited for compositional "tailoring" to optimize specific desirable properties. Liquid phase epitaxy can be used to deposit Gd3Ga5012 spacing layers on magnetic garnet films and this arrangement possesses certain advantages over more conventional magnetic filmspacing layer combinations. However, it cannot be used if the magnetic film is to be ion implanted.
Recording systems and other associated electronic equipment were engineered, calibrated, and used to measure antenna radiation patterns of aircraft structures. Antenna design, measured and computed results, and performance are discussed. Data show measured and computer data to be in agreement.
A ten-channel analog switch has been developed as a sample and shape circuit for signals used as inputs to a logarithmic pulse height recording system. The circuit employs a field effect transistor as the switching element. Switching transients are reduced to approximately 2 mV by adding to the gated signal an inverted transient generated by an identical circuit with no signal applied. The circuit is linear to 2% from 3 mV to 10 V.
Friction minimization between magnetic media (tape, cards, drums, etc.) and magnetic transducer (heads, etc.) is a key requirement in recording systems. Results are presented for an investigation intended to eliminate previously encountered shortcomings of friction-reducing treatments by a deposition of an inert liquid film on a fully manufactured (cured) magnetic medium. The film contains no particles, represents a compound characterized by good lubricating and thermal properties, is inert with respect to the normal formulation constituents, and has low surface tension and vapor pressure characteristics. The deposited film need only be molecularly thin to impart adequate lubricating properties to the tape. The discussion covers the characteristics of the surface lubricant, method of application, and surface coated magnetic media test results. Greater than 5 million passes of the 3M 900 tape on a loop tester are achieved with no apparent effect on the tape and with head wear decreased by as much as a factor of ten
The paper outlines the plans and progress related to the development of a Programmed Eye-track Recording System and Eye-coupled Ubiquitous Scene-generator known by the acronym PERSEUS. Particular attention is given to the design and implementation of a computer-based real-time eye-tracking system with associated digital scenic display capability. The accurate eye-tracker developed by Cornsweet and Crane (1973) is selected for this purpose. The discussion covers automatic detection of fixations and saccades, automatic scanpath analysis, fixation-conditional stimulation, and digital scene generation. The all-digital approach to scenic simulation not only eliminates the camera optics and electromechanical servomechanisms of TV-model systems of simulation but also opens the way to the virtually unlimited sequencing of data-base contents and perspectives thereof.
Data reduction and procedures for conducting force tests in a 20 inch Mach 6 tunnel are described. A discussion of pretest and testing phases are included. Items that are to be checked during model design and construction are outlined as well as safety requirements, starting loads tests, instructions for data acquisition and model installation. Measurement of balance and model misalignment and instructions for calibrating the angle of attack screen are covered. Procedures for making reference pressure, attitude tare, and data runs are included. The 20 inch tunnel force program is examined, and a description of data recording system input and load contrast sheets is given. An appendix presents a description, operating characteristics, and Mach number calibration of the tunnel, as well as tunnel characteristics.
Long-term time-trend analysis was performed on astronomical atmospheric extinction data in wideband UBV and various narrow-band systems recorded at Cerro Tololo, Kitt Peak, Lick, and McDonald observatories. All of the data had to be transformed into uniform monochromatic extinction data before trend analysis could be performed. The paper describes the various reduction techniques employed. The time-trend analysis was then carried out by the method of least squares. A special technique, called 'histogram shaping', was employed to adjust for the fact that the errors of the reduced monochromatic extinction data were not essentially Gaussian. On the assumption that there are no compensatory background and local extinction changes, the best values obtained for extinction trends due to background aerosol changes during the years 1960 to 1972 are 0.006 + or - 0.013 (rms) and 0.009 + or - 0.009 (rms) stellar magnitudes per air mass per decade in the blue and yellow wavelength regions, respectively.
