Survey of man-made electrical noise affecting radio broadcasting

Survey, consisting of limited noise measurements, was made to augment and verify existing data at HF and VHF and to obtain basic data at UHF. Exact frequencies were determined by the absence of intentionally generated signals around three selected frequencies.

Optimum FM pre-emphasis

Calibrated RF signal generator, precision RF attenuator, and a wave analyzer are used to determine the spectral noise characteristics in the baseband of receiver as a function of RF input power.

Saturation current spikes eliminated in saturable core transformers

Unsaturating composite magnetic core transformer, consisting of two separate parallel cores designed so impending core saturation causes signal generation, terminates high current spike in converter primary circuit. Simplified waveform, demonstrates transformer effectiveness in eliminating current spikes.

Bounded state space

This investigation is divided functionally into three different areas: (1) study of bounded state space, (2) nonlinear smoothing theory, and (3) system identification. (1) Study of bounded state space: necessary and sufficient conditions for an optimal control are obtained for a bounded state space optimal control problem. The difficulty of determining the so-called jump conditions is eliminated; however, the problem of determining the points where the response either enters or leaves the boundary still remains unsolved. (2) Nonlinear smoothing theory: nonlinear fixed-interval, fixed-point and fixed-lag smoothing of a random signal generated by a stochastic differential equation are investigated. Results on the asymptotic stability of a linear constant-parameter fixed-interval smoothing filter are obtained. (3) System identification: a particular stochastic modelling problem is solved. An Ito stochastic integral equation is used to mathematically model a black box having multiple inputs and multiple outputs. A new method for identifying system parameters is presented.

Junction range finder

Electronic system locates interferences in radar reception. System utilizes well known frequency-modulated continuous-wave technique to locate objects with nonlinear impedances. FM transmitter generates signal through bandpass filter which eliminates higher order harmonics around carrier frequency.

Signature extension techniques applied to multispectral scanner data.

Review of a number of spectral radiance signature extension techniques based on the concept of preprocessing the data to reduce the effects due to atmospheric effects, scanner look angle, etc. One of the promising methods studied to date involves using a ratio preprocessing transformation wherein the signals generated in adjacent spectral bands are ratioed on a point-by-point basis prior to classification. This method is easily and efficiently implemented and tests to date have yielded excellent results. Signatures have been successfully extended over 100+ miles, four days, different times of day, and very different atmospheric conditions.

Improved control for nuclear/thermionic power source: A concept

Variable-gain power regulator is used to maintain constant load voltage. There are two feedback loops. One is tied directly with regulator to feed error voltage, which is sum of reference and load voltages. Second loop is tied with reactor, where output current of thermionic fuel elements is fed back to signal generator.

Passive seismic experiment

The network of seismometers installed by the Apollo 17 and other Apollo missions is described. The effects of the impacts of lunar modules and S-4B stages on the lunar surfaces are discussed. The information concerning lunar composition which is obtained by analyzing the seismic signals generated by moonquakes and meteoroid impacts are analyzed. It is concluded that the seismic activity within the moon is extremely low compared to that with the earth. The moon is characterized by a rigid, dynamically inactive outer shell, approximately 1000 kilometers thick, surrounding a core that has markedly different elastic properties.

Preliminary study of a possible automatic landing system

Navigation and control laws for a possible automatic landing system have been investigated. The system makes use of data from an inertial table and either an airborne or ground radar to generate signals that guide the airplane to a landing. All landing maneuvers take place within a zone that extends 6000 m out from the touchdown point, 4000 m on each side of the runway center line, and 540 m high. The results show that the system can adequately control the airplane on steep, curved decelerating approaches to a landing that takes place with small errors from the desired landing point and desired airplane attitude. The system studied would interface well with the scanning beam microwave landing system (MLS). The use of this system with the MLS makes it possible to incorporate an independent landing monitor.
