Three-dimensional elastoplastic stress analysis of unidirectional boron/aluminum composites

A three dimensional elastoplastic finite element micromechanical model was developed to study the state of stress around a broken fibers in a unidirectional composite. A boron/aluminum composite consisting of 50 percent by volume of fibers in a square array and subjected to an axial loading is taken as a specific example. This loading in the fiber direction is applied in small increments, by prescribing increments of boundary displacement, until the first failure occurs. The effect of reduced material properties of the aluminum matrix material at elevated temperature is also studied. The results are presented in the form of stress contours and stress-strain plots.

Stress analysis of ribbon parachutes

An analytical method has been developed for determining the internal load distribution for ribbon parachutes subjected to known riser and aerodynamic forces. Finite elements with non-linear elastic properties represent the parachute structure. This method is an extension of the analysis previously developed by the authors and implemented in the digital computer program CANO. The present analysis accounts for the effect of vertical ribbons in the solution for canopy shape and stress distribution. Parametric results are presented which relate the canopy stress distribution to such factors as vertical ribbon strength, number of gores, and gore shape in a ribbon parachute.

Voice stress analysis

In a study of the validity of eight candidate voice measures (fundamental frequency, amplitude, speech rate, frequency jitter, amplitude shimmer, Psychological Stress Evaluator scores, energy distribution, and the derived measure of the above measures) for determining psychological stress, 17 males age 21 to 35 were subjected to a tracking task on a microcomputer CRT while parameters of vocal production as well as heart rate were measured. Findings confirm those of earlier studies that increases in fundamental frequency, amplitude, and speech rate are found in speakers involved in extreme levels of stress. In addition, it was found that the same changes appear to occur in a regular fashion within a more subtle level of stress that may be characteristic, for example, of routine flying situations. None of the individual speech measures performed as robustly as did heart rate.

Determination of the bending and buckling effect in the stress analysis of shell structures accessible from one side only

The present report describes a device for ascertaining the bending and buckling effect in stress measurements on shell structures accessible from one side only. Beginning with a discussion of the relationship between flexural strain and certain parameters, the respective errors of the test method for great or variable skin curvature within the test range are analyzed and illustrated by specimen example.

Cyclic-stress analysis of notches for supersonic transport conditions

The feasibility of using the finite element method to account for the effects of cyclic load and temperature on local stresses and strains at a notch was demonstrated. The behavior of a notched titanium panel was studied under variable loads and temperatures representative of flight conditions for the lower wing surface of a Supersonic Transport (SST). The analysis was performed with the use of the BOPACE finite-element computer program which provides capability to determine high temperature and large viscoplastic effects caused by cyclic thermal and mechanical loads. The analysis involves the development of the finite-element model as well as determination of the structural behavior of the notched panel. Results are presented for twelve SST flights comprised of five different load-temperature cycles. The results show the approach is feasible, but material response to cyclic loads, temperatures, and hold times requires improved understanding to allow proper modeling of the material.

Thermal Stress Analysis of RCG-Tempered TUFI Tile TPS for Hypersonic Vehicles

This paper presents detailed results from linear and nonlinear finite-element thermal stress analyses of a new tile, Thermal Protection Systems (TPS) concept. A very thin coating of Reaction Cured Glass (RCG) is used to "temper" the surface of Toughened Uni-Piece Fibrous Insulation (TUFI) tiles to improve resistance to thermal shock and thermal cycling effects. The coating also serves to reduce catalytic heating and may improve waterproofing. Calculations include trajectory-based aerothermal heating environments for X-34 wing leading edge TPS designs and arc jet environments for TPS test articles. The nonlinear analyses include the high temperature plasticity of RCG to demonstrate the reuseability of the material.

Finite element stress analysis of the human left ventricle whose irregular shape is developed from single plane cineangiocardiogram

The three-dimensional left ventricular chamber geometrical model is developed from single plane cineangiocardiogram. This left ventricular model is loaded by an internal pressure monitored by cardiac catheterization. The resulting stresses in the left ventricular model chamber's wall are determined by computerized finite element procedure. For the discretization of this left ventricular model structure, a 20-node, isoparametric finite element is employed. The analysis and formulation of the computerised procedure is presented in the paper, along with the detailed algorithms and computer programs. The procedure is applied to determine the stresses in a left ventricle at an instant, during systole. Next, a portion (represented by a finite element) of this left ventricular chamber is simulated as being infarcted by making its active-state modulus value equal to its passive-state value; the neighbouring elements are shown to relieve the 'infarcted' element of stress by themselves taking on more stress.

Stress analysis of a rectangular implant in laminated composites using 2-D and 3-D finite elements

An analysis method using the FEM based on the Hellinger-Reissner variation principle has been developed to determine the 3-D stresses and displacements near a rectangular implant inside a laminated composite material. Three-dimensional elements are employed in regions where the interlaminar stress is considered to be significant; 2-D elements are used in other areas. Uniaxially loaded graphite-epoxy laminates have been analyzed; the implant was modeled as four plies of 3501/6 epoxy located in the middle of the laminate. It is shown that the interlaminar stresses are an order of magnitude lower than the stress representing the applied far-field load. The stress concentration factors of both the interlaminar and in-plane stresses depend on the stacking sequence of the laminate.

Direct method of design and stress analysis of rotating disks with temperature gradient

A method is presented for the determination of the contour of disks, typified by those of aircraft gas turbines, to incorporate arbitrary elastic-stress distributions resulting from either centrifugal or combined centrifugal and thermal effects. The specified stress may be radial, tangential, or any combination of the two. Use is made of the finite-difference approach in solving the stress equations, the amount of computation necessary in the evolution of a design being greatly reduced by the judicious selection of point stations by the aid of a design chart. Use of the charts and of a preselected schedule of point stations is also applied to the direct problem of finding the elastic and plastic stress distribution in disks of a given design, thereby effecting a great reduction in the amount of calculation. Illustrative examples are presented to show computational procedures in the determination of a new design and in analyzing an existing design for elastic stress and for stresses resulting from plastic flow.

A Special Investigation to Develop a General Method for Three-dimensional Photoelastic Stress Analysis

The method of strain measurement after annealing is reviewed and found to be satisfactory for the materials available in this country. A new general method is described for the photoelastic determination of the principal stresses at any point of a general body subjected to arbitrary load. The method has been applied to a sphere subjected to diametrical compressive loads. The results show possibilities of high accuracy.

Finite element mesh refinement criteria for stress analysis

This paper discusses procedures for finite-element mesh selection and refinement. The objective is to improve accuracy. The procedures are based on (1) the minimization of the stiffness matrix race (optimizing node location); (2) the use of h-version refinement (rezoning, element size reduction, and increasing the number of elements); and (3) the use of p-version refinement (increasing the order of polynomial approximation of the elements). A step-by-step procedure of mesh selection, improvement, and refinement is presented. The criteria for 'goodness' of a mesh are based on strain energy, displacement, and stress values at selected critical points of a structure. An analysis of an aircraft lug problem is presented as an example.

Bearing-bypass loading in composite joints - Testing and stress analysis

A combined experimental and analytical study of bearing and bypass loading on single-fastener specimens of a 16-ply, quasi-isotropic T300/5208 graphite/epoxy laminate with a centrally located hole is reported. The specimens were loaded in either tension or compression, and onset damage, ultimate strengths, and corresponding failure modes were determined. The tension data showed the expected linear interaction for combined bearing-bypass loading with damage developing in the net-section tension mode. However, the bearing-onset strengths showed an unexpected interaction of the bearing and compressive bypass loads in which the latter reduced the bearing-onset strength. A linear finite element analysis showed that bearing-bypass loading had a marked influence on the bolt-hole contact which in turn had a significant effect on local stresses.
