Feasibility of modern airships - Design definition and performance of selected concepts

Three promising modern airship system concepts and their associated missions were studied: (1) a heavy-lift airship, employing a nonrigid hull and a significant amount of rotor lift, used for short-range transporting and positioning of heavy military and civil payloads; (2) a VTOL (vertical take-off and landing), metal-clad, partially buoyant airship used as a short-haul commercial transport; (3) a fully-buoyant airship used for long-endurance Navy missions. The heavy-lift airship concept offers a dramatic increase in vertical lift capability over existing systems at significantly lower costs per ton-mile. The VTOL airship transport concept appears to be economically competititve with other VTOL aircraft concepts but can attain significantly lower noise levels. The fully-buoyant airship concept can provide an airborne platform with long endurance that satisfies many Navy mission requirements.

Flap noise and aerodynamic results for model QCSEE over-the-wing configurations

Noise spectra in three dimensions and aerodynamic data were measured for a model of the NASA QCSEE (Quiet Clean Short-Haul Experimental Engine) over-the-wing configuration. The effects of flap length, nozzle exhaust velocity, and nozzle geometry were determined using a single nozzle and wing-flap segment. Related tests indicated that the scaled-up model data would be representative of full scale flap noise with the QCSEE engine. The scaled-up QCSEE model data imply that the noise goal will be very nearly attained.

Over-the-wing model thrust reverser noise tests

Experimental results are presented for static acoustic tests of a 1/12 scale model over-the-wing target type thrust reverser. The model configuration simulates a design that is applicable to the over-the-wing short-haul advanced technology engine. Aerodynamic screening tests of a variety of reverser designs identified configurations that satisfied a reverse thrust requirement of 35 percent of forward thrust at a nozzle pressure ratio of 1.29. The variations in the reverser configuration included, blocker door angle, blocker door lip angle and shape, and side skirt shape. Acoustic data are presented and compared for the various configurations. The model data scaled to a single full size engine show that peak free field perceived noise levels at a 152.4 meter sideline distance range from 98 to 104 PNdB.

Preliminary QCSEE program test results

The QCSEE (Quiet, Clean, Short-Haul Experimental Engine) program has entered the engine test phase. Overall design and advanced technology incorporated into the two engines in the program were described. In addition, preliminary engine test results are presented and compared to the technical requirements the engines were designed to meet.

Overview of the QCSEE program

Externally blown flap and upper surface blown flap powered lift concepts were investigated in the Quiet Clean Short-Haul Experimental Engine Program and briefly discussed along with propulsion system requirements. Noise limits, emission standards, thrust requirements, and thrust-to-weight ratios are among the factors considered.

Acoustic design of the QCSEE propulsion systems

Acoustic design features and techniques employed in the Quiet Clean Short-Haul Experimental Engine (QCSEE) Program are described. The role of jet/flap noise in selecting the engine fan pressure ratio for powered lift propulsion systems is discussed. The QCSEE acoustic design features include a hybrid inlet (near-sonic throat velocity with acoustic treatment); low fan and core pressure ratios; low fan tip speeds; gear-driven fans; high and low frequency stacked core noise treatment; multiple-thickness treatment; bulk absorber treatment; and treatment on the stator vanes. The QCSEE designs represent and anticipated acoustic technology improvement of 12 to 16 PNdb relative to the noise levels of the low-noise engines used on current wide-body commercial jet transport aircraft.

Acoustics and aerodynamics of over-the-wing thrust reversers

As part of the Quiet Clean Short-Haul Experimental Engine Program, model tests were conducted to determine the effects of thrust reverser geometric parameters on noise and reverse thrust. The acoustic tests used a 1/6 scale model thrust reverser while the aerodynamic performance tests used a 1/12 scale model reverser. Parameters which were varied in both tests include blocker spacing, blocker height, lip angle, and lip length. The impact of these parameters on peak sideline noise and reverse thrust performance is discussed.

NASA aviation safety reporting system

An analytical study of reports relating to cockpit altitude alert systems was performed. A recent change in the Federal Air Regulation permits the system to be modified so that the alerting signal approaching altitude has only a visual component; the auditory signal would continue to be heard if a deviation from an assigned altitude occurred. Failure to observe altitude alert signals and failure to reset the system were the commonest cause of altitude deviations related to this system. Cockpit crew distraction was the most frequent reason for these failures. It was noted by numerous reporters that the presence of altitude alert system made them less aware of altitude; this lack of altitude awareness is discussed. Failures of crew coordination were also noted. It is suggested that although modification of the altitude alert system may be highly desirable in short-haul aircraft, it may not be desirable for long-haul aircraft in which cockpit workloads are much lower for long periods of time. In these cockpits, the aural alert approaching altitudes is perceived as useful and helpful. If the systems are to be modified, it appears that additional emphasis on altitude awareness during recurrent training will be necessary; it is also possible that flight crew operating procedures during climb and descent may need examination with respect to monitoring responsibilities. A selection of alert bulletins and responses to them is presented.

Feasibility of modern airships - Preliminary assessment

Attention is given to the NASA program, Feasibility Study of Modern Airships, initiated to investigate potential research and technology programs associated with airship development. A historical survey of the program is presented, including the development of past airship concepts, aerodynamical and design improvements, structure and material concepts, and research in controls, avionics, instrumentation, flight operations, and ground handling. A mission analysis was carried out which considered passenger and cargo transportation, heavy-lift, short-haul applications, surveillance missions, and the transportation of natural gas. A vehicle parametric analysis examined the entire range of airship concepts, discussing both conventional airships and hybrids. Various design options were evaluated, such as choice of structural materials, use of boundary-layer control, and choice of lifting gas.

Development and test of an inlet and duct to provide airflow for a wing boundary layer control system

The boundary layer control (BLC) system of the quiet short-haul research airplane (QSRA) requires significant amounts of pressurized airflow for successful operation. An inlet and duct were successfully developed which removed airflow from the engine fan duct for the BLC system at or above the required total pressure of 99% of the average fan duct total pressure. The design was constrained by the tight space limitations of the QSRA nacelle. Potential flow with boundary layer analysis techniques were used as an aid to select the inlet and duct geometries. Airflow and total pressure profile data were obtained during development tests.

Preliminary QCSEE program - Test results

Preliminary results are reported for the Quiet Clean Short-haul Experimental Engine (QCSEE) program initiated by NASA in 1974 to develop propulsion system technology suitable for powered-lift short-range commercial aircraft. The QCSEE technology also has applications to the proposed U.S. Navy V/STOL aircraft. Emphasis in the QCSEE program is placed on developing engines with low noise characteristics; in addition, the power plants are required to conform to EPA 1979 pollutant emissions standards. Thrust performance, fan design, and thrust/weight ratio are discussed for both the over-the-wing and under-the-wing engine configurations under study.

Effects of inlet airframe integration on the inlet of an upper surface blowing four-engine STOL aircraft

Inlet and nacelle static pressures were measured on a 0.55-scale model of the Quiet Short-Haul Research Airplane (QSRA) in the Ames Research Center's 40- by 80-Foot Wind Tunnel. This model is powered by four JT-15D engines located above the wing with closely spaced adjacent inlets. A fifth JT-15D engine in the fuselage provides boundary-layer control air. Each inlet was instrumented with four to eight rows of axial pressure taps located between X/R approximately plus or minus 1. The tests simulated a broad range of aircraft operating conditions, including engine-out, with lift coefficients from 0.8 to 10.0. Results indicate that the inlets perform well under most operating conditions with little interaction between inlets when the aircraft is moving. Potential problem areas identified are high sideslip angle during approach and an interaction effect between adjacent inlets with high mass flows in static conditions.

Real time digital propulsion system simulation for manned flight simulators

The QCSEE (Quiet, Clean Short-haul Experimental Engine) Program was initiated by NASA to develop and demonstrate propulsion system technology for an advanced commercial STOL aircraft. One of the specific technical objectives was to provide technology for digital electronic control of future commercial engines. An element of this technology development was to evaluate the digital control in a simulated flight environment. In this connection a simulation program was initiated to evaluate the QCSEE UTW (Under-the-Wing) digital control system over a range of conditions encountered in typical airport operations. The goal of the simulation effort was to derive a real time digital propulsion simulation which could be integrated into a multiengine aircraft simulation. A summary is provided of the accomplishments which have been made in this program.

Ride quality evaluation. IV - Models of subjective reaction to aircraft motion

The paper examines models of human reaction to the motions typically experienced on short-haul aircraft flights. Data are taken on the regularly scheduled flights of four commercial airlines - three airplanes and one helicopter. The data base consists of: (1) a series of motion recordings distributed over each flight, each including all six degrees of freedom of motion; temperature, pressure, and noise are also recorded; (2) ratings of perceived comfort and satisfaction from the passengers on each flight; (3) moment-by-moment comfort ratings from a test subject assigned to each airplane; and (4) overall comfort ratings for each flight from the test subjects. Regression models are obtained for prediction of rated comfort from rms values for six degrees of freedom of motion. It is shown that the model C = 2.1 + 17.1 T + 17.2 V (T = transverse acceleration, V = vertical acceleration) gives a good fit to the airplane data but is less acceptable for the helicopter data.

Acoustic testing of the AVCO-Lycoming YF-102 turbofan engine was done on a static test stand in support of the quiet short-haul research aircraft acoustic design. Overall noise levels were dominated by the fan noise emanating from the exhaust duct, except at high power settings when combination tones were generated in the fan inlet. Component noise levels, calculated by noise prediction methods were in reasonable agreement with the measured results. Far-field microphones placed at ground level were found superior to those at engine centerline height, even at high frequencies.

Potential applications of advanced aircraft in developing countries

An investigation sponsored by NASA indicates that air transportation can play an important role in the economic progress of developing countries. By the turn of the century, the rapid economic growth now occurring in many developing countries should result in a major redistribution of the world's income. Some countries now classified as 'developing' will become 'developed' and are likely to become far more important to the world's civil aviation industry. Developing countries will be increasingly important buyers of conventional subsonic long-haul jet passenger aircraft but not to the point of significant influence on the design or technological content of future aircraft of this type. However, the technological content of more specialized aircraft may be influenced by developing country requirements and reflected in designs which fill a need concerning specialized missions, related to short-haul, low-density, rough runways, and natural resource development.
