Longitudinal Solid P Longitudinal Solid Polarized Target for CL get for CLAS12 and Study of Spin AS12 and Study of Spin Structure of Nucleons

A suite of experiments measuring target-spin observables in electron-nucleon scattering (dubbed Run Group C) was conducted at Jefferson Lab's Hall B in Newport News, VA with a new polarized nuclear target known as 'APOLLO' (Ammonia POLarized LOngitudinally). This innovative target is engineered to seamlessly integrate with the advanced 12GeV CEBAF (Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility) accelerator and the Hall B CLAS12 (12 GeV CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer) detector array. The 'APOLLO' target harnesses the power of Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP) to achieve longitudinal polarization of solid ammonia, thereby creating a net polarization in both protons (NH3) and deuterons (ND3). These samples are subjected to a 5 Tesla magnetic field produced by the CLAS12 spectrometer central solenoid, cooled to 1 K using helium evaporation, and subsequently exposed to microwave radiation at a frequency of 140 GHz. This project was made possible through a collaborative partnership between the Jefferson Lab Target Group, Old Dominion University, University of Virginia, Christopher Newport University, and the CLAS Collaboration. Integrating the APOLLO target into CLAS12 presented unique challenges because of its specific spatial and dimensional constraints. This dissertation will highlight the innovative solutions developed to address these challenges, including the creation of a new target material transport system, the incorporation of superconducting magnetic correction coils, and the development of a customized Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) system. In addition to a detailed description of the development and operation of APOLLO, and an overview of RGC, this document also describes the global data fitting of proton asymmetries in the Deep Inelastic scattering (DIS) and the Resonance regions, and it offers insights into the comprehensive analysis of target polarization data.

Leak test for solid oxide fuel cells and solid oxide electrolysis cells

A simple, fast, and economical alcohol penetration method for assessing the solid oxide cell to metal window frame seal in a typical planar design is presented. An alcohol such as ethanol or isopropanol is placed into the cavity of a cell sealed to the window frame. Within 3–5 min, one can determine if the glass seal is hermetic by visual observation along the seal edges on the side of the sealed frame. Cross bubbling and open circuit voltage methods for determining whether the seal failed or cracked at high temperature after final stack firing are also discussed.

Neutron Imaging of Al6061 Prepared by Solid-State Friction Stir Additive Manufacturing

Solid-state Friction Stir Additive Manufacturing has recently gained attention as a result of its capacity to fabricate large-scale parts while preserving the mechanical properties of the feedstock material. However, the correlation between the quality of layer-by-layer bonding of the deposited metal and processing parameters has remained unknown. Neutron imaging techniques, with 90% total transmission per cm, are employed for Al6061 parts fabricated by MELD ® Technology as a non-destructive evaluation approach for the first time to investigate the layer-by-layer structure of a stadium-shaped ingot in different sections. The post-processed results show the fabricated parts with an optimized set of processing parameters are void-free. However, the hydrocarbon-based feedstock lubricant segregates between the layers, which consequently may lead to non-uniform weaker mechanical properties along the build direction and stimulate crack initiation during mechanical loading. The tensile test results show 14% lower strain-to-failure values in alleged contaminated areas in transmission imaging results. Additionally, layer bonding is significantly impacted by hot-on-hot and hot-on-cold layer deposition schemes, especially for larger layer thicknesses.

Encapsulated sulfide glass solid electrolytes and solid-state laminate electrode assemblies

Nanofilm-encapsulated sulfide glass solid electrolyte structures and methods for making the encapsulated glass structures involve a lithium ion conducting sulfide glass sheet encapsulated on its opposing major surfaces by a continuous and conformal nanofilm made by atomic layer deposition (ALD). During manufacture, the reactive surfaces of the sulfide glass sheet are protected from deleterious reaction with ambient moisture, and the nanofilm can be configured to provide additional performance advantages, including enhanced mechanical strength and improved chemical resistance.

Solvent-Free Melt-Processed Cathode Mitigates Li Anode Instability in Polymer-Based Solid-State Batteries

Solvent-free manufacturing of battery components is a promising alternative to traditional slurry processing for reducing the cost and environmental impact. In this work, we used twin-screw melt extrusion to fabricate a polymer-based high voltage composite cathode. The melt-processed cathode is dense (near zero porosity) and thick (65 μm) and has high active material loading (80 wt %). The active particles are distributed uniformly throughout the melt-processed cathode, unlike the traditional slurry-cast cathode, which exhibits inhomogeneous particle distribution. In the melt-processed cathode, polymer and carbon form separate phases, whereas in the slurry-cast cathode they blend into a single phase. Due to these structural differences, the melt-processed cathode shows smooth charge–discharge profiles, while the slurry-cast cathode shows noisy charging and soft-shorting behavior. In conclusion, this work highlights that twin-screw extrusion as a scalable, solvent-free manufacturing method is advantageous in producing uniform cathodes, which mitigates anode instability.

Simple Approximation for the Ideal Reference State of Gases Adsorbed on Solid-State Surfaces

Reference states are useful as models for facilitating calculations of equilibrium constants, and they may also serve as standard states that are convenient for organizing and tabulating thermodynamic data; however, standard state conventions and appropriate reference states for adsorbed species have received less attention than those for pure substances and solutes. Here, we compare seven choices of reference states for calculations of equilibrium constants and transition state theory rate constants for flat surfaces, in particular (1) an ideal 2D harmonic oscillator, (2) an ideal rigid-molecule harmonic oscillator, (3) an ideal 2D harmonic oscillator with separable surface modes, (4) a 2D ideal gas, (5) an ideal 2D hindered translator, (6) an ideal 2D hindered translator with lowest-order barriers, and (7) a simple ideal 2D hindered translator proposed in this work. The advantage of models 5–7 is that they can treat both mobile and localized adsorbates in a consistent way, whereas models 1–3 are only appropriate for localized adsorbates, and model 4 is only appropriate for a freely translating adsorbate. Furthermore, models 6 and 7 reduce the computational cost without the user having to calculate barrier heights for diffusion. An advantage of the simple ideal 2D hindered translator is that it has a physical high-temperature limit. We also propose a reference state for nonflat surfaces. Here, the user is encouraged to choose a reference state based on the appropriateness of the model and the practicality of the calculations.

Structural features of solid-solid phase transitions and lattice dynamics in U 3 O 8

Triuranium octoxide (U 3 O 8 ) undergoes an orthorhombic to hexagonal structural phase transition near Ts=305°C, and a separate nonstructural phase transition at Tc=210°C. The later transition has previously been associated with temperature-induced fluctuations in the uranium oxidation state. A discontinuity in the slope of electrical conductivity versus temperature measurement at 210°C has supported this idea. The orthorhombic phase has three crystallographic sites in two distinct oxidation configurations [2 U(V) and 1 U(VI)], whereas the hexagonal phase has one distinct uranium site. High-resolution x-ray diffraction measurements eliminate the possibility of superlattice Bragg reflections to less than 0.2 e - scattering power and U 3 O 8 is not metallic; consequently, the presence of oxidation fluctuations is required for charge balancing. Interestingly, the order-to-disorder transition occurs at a much lower temperature than the structural transition. Using temperature-dependent x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy, we show anisotropic lattice expansion in the in-plane b and c lattice constants. A specific discontinuity in the temperature derivatives of the b and c lattice constants are the first reported structural signatures of the order-to-disorder transition, suggestive of a change in local U–O coordination. Phonon frequencies of U 3 O 8 measured by Raman spectroscopy show significant temperature-dependent dynamics. Redshifting of several modes between 40 and 300°C cannot be explained by unit cell expansion alone because the unit cell volume decreases in this region. Instead, we show that phonon frequencies are highly correlated with the anisotropic lattice expansion/contraction along specific crystallographic directions.

Singlet Fission in Thin Solid Films of Bis(thienyl)diketopyrrolopyrroles

The singlet fission (SF) process discovered in bis(thienyl)diketopyrrolopyrroles (TDPPs) can boost their potential for photovoltaics (PV). The crystal structures of TDPP analogs carrying n-hexyl, n-butyl, or 2-(adamant-1-yl)ethyl substituents are similar, but contain increasingly slipped stacked neighbor molecules. The observed SF rate constants, k SF , (7±4), (9±3) and (5.6±1.9) ns –1 for thin films of the three compounds, respectively, are roughly equal, but the triplet quantum yields vary strongly: (120±40), (160±40) and (70±16), respectively. The recent molecular pair model reproduces the near equality of all three k SF at the crystal geometries and identifies all possible pair arrangements in which SF is predicted to be faster, by up to two orders of magnitude. Furthermore, it is also clear that the presently non-existent ability to predict the rates of processes competing with SF is pivotal for providing a guide for efforts to optimize the materials for PV.
