Effect of track structure and radioprotectors on the induction of oncogenic transformation in murine fibroblasts by heavy ions

The oncogenic potential of high-energy 56Fe particles (1 GeV/nucleon) accelerated with the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron at the Brookhaven National Laboratory was examined utilizing the mouse C3H 10T1/2 cell model. The dose-averaged LET for high-energy 56Fe is estimated to be 143 keV/micrometer with the exposure conditions used in this study. For 56Fe ions, the maximum relative biological effectiveness (RBEmax) values for cell survival and oncogenic transformation were 7.71 and 16.5 respectively. Compared to 150 keV/micrometer 4He nuclei, high-energy 56Fe nuclei were significantly less effective in cell killing and oncogenic induction. The prostaglandin E1 analog misoprostol, an effective oncoprotector of C3H 10T1/2 cells exposed to X rays, was evaluated for its potential as a radioprotector of oncogenic transformation with high-energy 56Fe. Exposure of cells to misoprostol did not alter 56Fe cytotoxicity or the rate of 56Fe-induced oncogenic transformation.

The Effect Stacking Fault Segregation and Phase Transformations have on Creep Strength in Ni-based Superalloys

In this study, two commercially similar polycrystalline Ni-based disk superalloys (LSHR and ME3) were creep tested at 760C and 552MPa to approximately 0.3% plastic strain. LSHR consistently displayed superior creep properties at this stress/temperature regime even though the microstructural characteristics between the two alloys were comparable. High resolution structural and chemical analysis, however, revealed significant differences between the two alloys among active gamma prime shearing modes involving superlattice intrinsic and extrinsic stacking faults. In ME3, Co and Cr segregation and Ni and Al depletion were observed along the intrinsic faults - revealing a gamma prime -to- gamma phase transformation. Conversely in LSHR, an alloy with a higher W content, Co and W segregation was observed along the intrinsic faults. This observation combined with scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) simulations confirm a gamma prime-to-D019 phase transformation along the intrinsic faults in LSHR. Using experimental observations and density functional theory calculations, a novel local phase transformation strengthening mechanism is proposed that could be further utilized to improve the high temperature creep capabilities of Ni-base disk alloys.

Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) Capability Maturity Levels for Ecosystems Enabling Digital Transformation

Digital engineering (DE) and integrated computational materials engineering (ICME) are widely recognized as critical enablers of faster, more affordable, and more reliable aerospace systems. However, many organizations have struggled to realize the promised return on investment (ROI) from digital initiatives. A primary reason is the absence of a shared, decision-focused framework that distinguishes simple digitization of existing workflows from true digital transformation that fundamentally changes how engineering decisions are made. This paper introduces an ICME capability maturity framework that fills this gap. The framework defines six cumulative ICME capability maturity levels (CMLs), explicitly tied to decision authority, engineering integration, optimization, and uncertainty management across material, process, structure, and performance scales. It is designed to complement established readiness metrics such as technology readiness levels (TRLs), manufacturing readiness levels (MRLs), and integration readiness levels (IRLs), by addressing a missing dimension: the conditions required for model-informed decision authority across scales. A unifying figure and capability table illustrate the six-level ICME Capability Maturity Framework, showing how organizations progress from digitization—with limited or negative ROI—to true digital transformation, where ICME-enabled workflows deliver measurable improvements in decision quality, cycle time, risk reduction, and reuse. The framework is intended for both technical practitioners and executive leadership, providing a common language to assess current state, guide roadmaps, align software ecosystem investments, and set realistic expectations for digital transformation outcomes. A regulatory-relevant statement clarifying the relationship between ICME capability and existing certification frameworks is provided.

NASA Enterprise Digital Transformation Initiative Strategic Framework & Implementation Approach

Since 1958, NASA has delivered its enduring bold purpose, characterized in the 2022 NASA Strategic Plan as a mission to discover, explore, innovate, and advance solutions to the problems of flight, within and outside the Earth’s atmosphere, for the benefit of humankind. The NASA Strategic Plan also recognizes that this mission will be delivered differently as it looks to a future marked by radical global change, which is in part being driven by digital advances. For this reason, in late 2020 NASA established an Enterprise Digital Transformation (DT) agency-level strategic initiative to accelerate and coordinate leveraging digital advances to transform the way the Agency works, the experience of its workforce and the agility of its workplace. This paper documents NASA’s DT strategic framework and associated implementation approach, with the DT strategic initiative serving to ignite, connect, integrate, and facilitate DT progress across a federated organizational operating model.

A transformer of closely spaced pulsed waveforms

Passive circuit, using diodes, transistors, and magnetic cores, transforms the voltage of repetitive positive or negative pulses. It combines a pulse transformer with switching devices to effect a resonant flux reset and can transform various pulsed waveforms that have a nonzero average value and are relatively cosely spaced in time.

Matrix transformations for spacecraft attitude determination

A common problem for experimental space physicists is the determination of the attitude matrix T which transforms vectors between representations in X and X' coordinate systems according to (vector V sub X) = (T sub XX')(vector V sub X'). A straightforward, simple, and efficient solution for the transformation matrix is a double-cross transformation. It is calculated from any two directions A and B, which are vectors normalized to unit length and are known in both X and X' coordinates. The B direction need be known only well enough to define the plane in which vectors A and B lie. The problem of the intersection of two cones as applicable to attitude solutions is also discussed.

Reinvestigation of the olivine-spinel transformation in Ni2SiO4 and the incongruent melting of Ni2SiO4 olivine

The olivine-spinel transformation and the melting behavior of Ni2SiO4 were investigated over the PT ranges of 20-40 kbar, 650-1200 C, and 5-13 kbar, 1600-1700 C, respectively. It was confirmed that Ni2SiO4 olivine melts incongruently at high pressures and that it is a stable phase until melting occurs. The PT slope of the incongruent melting curve is approximately 105 bars/deg. The olivine-spinel transformation curve was shown to be a reversible univariant curve, and could be expressed by the linear equation P(bars) equals 23,300 + 11.8 x T(deg C). The transformation curve determined by Akimoto et al. (1965) is nearly parallel to that of the present work, but lies at pressures about 12% lower.

Application and sensitivity investigation of Fourier transforms for microwave radiometric inversions

Existing microwave radiometer technology now provides a suitable method for remote determination of the ocean surface's absolute brightness temperature. To extract the brightness temperature of the water from the antenna temperature equation, an unstable Fredholm integral equation of the first kind was solved. Fast Fourier Transform techniques were used to invert the integral after it is placed into a cross-correlation form. Application and verification of the methods to a two-dimensional modeling of a laboratory wave tank system were included. The instability of the Fredholm equation was then demonstrated and a restoration procedure was included which smooths the resulting oscillations. With the recent availability and advances of Fast Fourier Transform techniques, the method presented becomes very attractive in the evaluation of large quantities of data. Actual radiometric measurements of sea water are inverted using the restoration method, incorporating the advantages of the Fast Fourier Transform algorithm for computations.

Continuous Fourier transform method and apparatus

An input analog signal to be frequency analyzed is separated into N number of simultaneous analog signal components each identical to the original but delayed relative to the original by a successively larger time delay. The separated and delayed analog components are combined together in a suitable number of adders and attenuators in accordance with at least one component product of the continuous Fourier transform and analog signal matrices to separate the analog input signal into at least one of its continuous analog frequency components of bandwidth 1/N times the bandwidth of the original input signal. The original analog input signal can be reconstituted by combining the separate analog frequency components in accordance with the component products of the continuous Fourier transform and analog frequency component matrices. The continuous Fourier transformation is useful for spectrum analysis, filtering, transfer function synthesis, and communications.

Error analysis of householder transformations as applied to the standard and generalized eigenvalue problems

Backward error analyses of the application of Householder transformations to both the standard and the generalized eigenvalue problems are presented. The analysis for the standard eigenvalue problem determines the error from the application of an exact similarity transformation, and the analysis for the generalized eigenvalue problem determines the error from the application of an exact equivalence transformation. Bounds for the norms of the resulting perturbation matrices are presented and compared with existing bounds when known.

On the variational equations for Householder transformations in feature selection

Results that suggest the possibility of using a sequential monotone process for solving the feature selection problem using Householder transformations are applied to the divergence separability criterion and an expression for the gradient of the divergence with respect to the generator of a single Householder transformation will be developed. This expression for the gradient is used in any number of differential correction schemes (iterators) that attempt to extremize the divergence. Data sets provided by the Earth Observations Division-JSC are used to demonstrate selecting the Householder transformations that generate the kxn matrix defining the best (in the sense of extremizing the divergence) k linear combinations of features. The tests allow initial comparisons to be made with results. In particular, this technique does not appear to require initial guesses for the iterator to be generated without replacement, exhaustive search, or other similar schemes.

The non-uniform transformation strain problem for an anisotropic ellipsoidal inclusion

The problem of an anisotropic ellipsoidal inclusion which undergoes a stress-free transformation strain (in the sense of J. D. Eshelby) is considered, and the following theorem is proved: if an ellipsoidal region in an infinite anisotropic linear elastic medium undergoes, in the absence of its surroundings, a stress-free transformation strain which is a polynomial of degree M in given position coordinates, then the final stress and strain state in the transformed inclusion, when constrained by its surroundings, is also a polynomial of degree M in those position coordinates.

Canonical analysis and transformation of Skylab multispectral scanner data

The author has identified the following significant results. The original transformation matrix, C, had sixteen axes. However, the first three axes contained 98.83% of the variance contained within the transformation. The values for axes one, two, and three were 83.61%, 14.49%, and 0.72%, respectively. The result was an 81.25% reduction in data bulk. It is expected that using transformed data for classification will result in significant reductions in computer cost.

Transformer design tradeoffs

Material was presented to assist transformer designers in the transition from long-used English units to the less familiar metric equivalents. A coordination between the area product numbers ap (product of window and core cross-section areas) and current density J was developed for a given regulation and temperature rise. Straight-line relationships for Ap and Volume, Ap and surface area At and, Ap and weight were developed. These relationships can now be used as new tools to simplify and standardize the process of transformer design. They also made it possible to design transformers of small bulk and volume or to optimize efficiency.
