Nanoscale degeneracy lifting in a geometrically frustrated antiferromagnet

The local atomic and magnetic structures of the compounds A MnO 2 (A = Na, Cu), which realize a geometrically frustrated, spatially anisotropic triangular lattice of Mn spins, have been investigated by atomic and magnetic pair distribution function analysis of neutron total scattering data. Relief of frustration in CuMnO 2 is accompanied by a conventional cooperative symmetry-lowering lattice distortion driven by Néel order. In NaMnO 2 , however, the distortion has a short-range nature. A cooperative interaction between the locally broken symmetry and short-range magnetic correlations lifts the magnetic degeneracy on a nanometer length scale, enabling long-range magnetic order in the Na derivative. The degree of frustration, mediated by residual disorder, contributes to the rather differing pathways to a single, stable magnetic ground state in these two related compounds. This study demonstrates how nanoscale structural distortions that cause local-scale perturbations can lift the ground-state degeneracy and trigger macroscopic magnetic order.

Magnetism of Nd 2 O 3 single crystals near the Néel temperature

Single crystals of Nd 2 O 3 were grown and characterized using neutron scattering and thermodynamic measurements. Nd 2 O 3 has long-range antiferromagnetic order below T N =0.55 K and specific-heat measurements have demonstrated that a significant amount of the magnetic entropy is released above T N . Inelastic neutron scattering experiments reveal a magnetic mode(s) with little dispersion peaked at ≈0.37meV that is of greatest intensity below T N but persists above 2T N . This persistence of dynamic correlations is likely related to frustrated interactions associated with the nearly ideal stacked triangular lattice geometry of J eff =12 spins on Nd 3+ ions. Furthermore, the magnetization is observed to be strongly anisotropic at all temperatures due to crystal field effects, with easy-plane anisotropy observed. Additionally, a noncompensated magnetic structure is inferred from the temperature dependence of the magnetization when a magnetic field of sufficient strength is applied within the basal plane near T N , and the evolution of the long-range order is summarized in a temperature-field phase diagram.

Magnetic field induced phase transitions of the triangular spin model

In this work, motivated by a recent inelastic neutron scattering experiment on YbMgGaO 4 , I study the homogeneous spin model on the triangular lattice using the cluster mean-field theory and exact diagonalization. Phase diagrams with and without magnetic field are computed. The results show that the magnetic field can induce the phase transition from the spin liquid state (or the stripe state) to the 120 ° antiferromagnetic state. These phase transitions are suppressed by the next-nearest-neighbor exchange interaction J 2 / J 1 and vanish as J 2 / J 1 > 0.11 . I analyze a parameter space at J 2 / J 1 = 0.1 , where a field induced phase transition can occur, and find that the deviation of the theoretical spin excitation energy from the experimental data is only about 0.054. These results imply that an effective homogeneous spin model still applies to YbMgGaO 4 .

From trivial to topological paramagnets: The case of Z 2 and Z 2 3 symmetries in two dimensions

Using quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we map out the phase diagram of Hamiltonians interpolating between trivial and nontrivial bosonic symmetry-protected topological phases, protected by Z 2 and Z 2 3 symmetries, in two dimensions. In all cases, we find that the trivial and the topological phases are separated by an intermediate phase in which the protecting symmetry is spontaneously broken. Depending on the model, we identify a variety of magnetic orders on the triangular lattice, including ferromagnetism, 3 × 3 order, and stripe orders (both commensurate and incommensurate). Critical properties are determined through a finite-size scaling analysis. Possible scenarios regarding the nature of the phase transitions are discussed.

Competing magnetic states in transition metal dichalcogenide moiré materials

Small-twist-angle transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) heterobilayers develop isolated flat moiré bands that are approximately described by triangular lattice generalized Hubbard models. In this paper we explore the metallic and insulating states that appear under different control conditions at a density of one electron per moiré period and the transitions between them. By combining fully self-consistent Hartree-Fock theory calculations with strong-coupling expansions around the atomic limit, we identify four different magnetic states and one nonmagnetic state near the model phase diagram’s metal-insulator phase transition line. Here, ferromagnetic insulating states, stabilized by nonlocal direct exchange interactions, are surprisingly prominent.

Tracking the evolution from isolated dimers to many-body entanglement in $\mathrm{NaLu}_x \mathrm{Yb}_{1-x}\mathrm{Se_2}$

Here, we synthesize homogeneous compositions of NaLu x Yb 1-x Se 2 , connecting nonmagnetic NaLuSe 2 to the triangular lattice spin liquid candidate NaYbSe 2 . Thermal and magnetic properties are studied as the system evolves from one with dilute magnetic defects to one of a dense magnetic lattice. The field- and temperature-dependent heat capacity show the carriers of entropy cross over from isolated magnetic ions to a correlated lattice born from spin dimers. For the dilute system we estimate the single-ion anisotropy (g ⟂ /g ∥ =3.13) and also the dimer exchange couplings J ⟂ (=5.4 K) and J ⟂ (=9.6 K), in order to draw comparison to the half-doped and full magnetic compounds.

Field-Induced Magnetic States in the Metallic Rare-Earth Layered Triangular Antiferromagnet TbAuAl 4 Ge 2

Magnetic frustration in metallic rare- earth lanthanides (Ln) with 4f electrons is crucial for producing interesting magnetic phases with high magnetic anisotropy where intertwined charge and spin degrees of freedom lead to novel phenomena. Here we report on the magnetic, thermodynamic, and electrical transport properties of TbAuAl 4 Ge 2 . Tb ions form two-dimensional triangular lattice layers which stack along the crystalline c axis. The magnetic phase diagram reveals multiple nearly degenerate ordered states upon applying field along the magnetically easy ab-plane before saturation. The magnetoresistance in this configuration exhibits intricate field dependence that closely follows that of the magnetization while the specific heat reveals a region of highly enhanced entropy, suggesting the possibility of a nontrivial spin textured phase. For fields applied along the c axis (hard axis), we find linear magnetoresistance over a wide range of fields. Further, we compare the magnetic properties and magnetoresistance with an isostructural GdAuAl 4 Ge 2 single crystal. These results identify TbAuAl 4 Ge 2 as an environment for complex quantum spin states and pave the way for further investigations of the broader LnAuAl 4 Ge 2 family of materials.

Role of electromagnetic gauge-field fluctuations in the selection between chiral and nematic superconductivity

Motivated by the observation of nematic superconductivity in several systems, we revisit the problem of the leading pairing instability of two-component unconventional superconductors on the triangular lattice—such as (p x , p y )-wave and (d x 2 –y 2 , d xy )-wave superconductors. Such a system has two possible superconducting states: the chiral state (e.g., p + ip or d + id), which breaks time-reversal symmetry, and the nematic state (e.g., p + p or d + d), which breaks the threefold rotational symmetry of the lattice. Weak-coupling calculations generally favor the chiral over the nematic superconducting state, raising the question of what mechanism can stabilize the latter. Here, we show that the electromagnetic field fluctuations can play a crucial role in selecting between these two states. Specifically, we derive and analyze the effective free energy for the two-component superconducting order parameter after integrating out the gauge-field fluctuations, which is formally justified if the spatial order parameter fluctuations can be neglected. A nonanalytic cubic term arises, as in the case of a conventional s -wave superconductor. However, unlike the latter, the cubic term depends on the relative phase and on the relative amplitudes between the two order parameter components, in such a way that it generally favors the nematic state. This result is a direct consequence of the fact that the stiffness of the superconducting order parameter is not isotropic. Competition with the quartic term, which favors the chiral state, leads to a renormalized phase diagram in which the nematic state displaces the chiral state over a wide region in the parameter space. Here, we analyze the stability of the fluctuation-induced nematic phase, generalize our results to tetragonal lattices, and discuss their applicability to candidate nematic superconductors, including twisted bilayer graphene.

Theory of a continuous bandwidth-tuned Wigner-Mott transition

Here we develop a theory for a continuous bandwidth-tuned transition at fixed fractional electron filling from a metal with a generic Fermi surface to a “Wigner-Mott” insulator that spontaneously breaks crystalline space-group symmetries. Across the quantum critical point, (i) the entire electronic Fermi surface disappears abruptly upon approaching from the metallic side, and (ii) the insulating charge gap and various order parameters associated with the spontaneously broken space-group symmetries vanish continuously upon approaching from the insulating side. Additionally, the insulating side hosts a Fermi surface of neutral spinons. We present a framework for describing such continuous metal-insulator transitions (MITs) and analyze the example of a bandwidth-tuned transition at a filling, $v$=1/6, for spinful electrons on the triangular lattice. By extending the theory to a certain large-$N$ limit, we provide a concrete example of such a continuous MIT and discuss numerous experimental signatures near the critical point. We place our results in the context of recent experiments in moiré transition metal dichalcogenide materials.

Magnetic frustration driven by conduction carrier blocking in Nd 2 Co 0.85 Si 2.88

The intermetallic compound Nd 2 Co 0.85 Si 2.88 having a triangular lattice could be synthesized in single phase only with defect crystal structure. Investigation through different experimental techniques indicate the presence of two magnetic transitions in the system. As verified experimentally and theoretically, the high-temperature transition $T_H$ ~ 140 K is associated with the development of ferromagnetic interaction between itinerant Co moments, whereas the low-temperature transition at $T_L$ ~ 6.5 K is due to the coupling among Nd–4$\textit{f}$ and Co–3$\textit{d}$ moments, which is antiferromagnetic in nature. Detailed studies of temperature-dependent dc magnetic susceptibility, field dependence of isothermal magnetization, nonequilibrium dynamical behavior, viz., magnetic relaxation, aging effect, magnetic-memory effect, and temperature dependence of heat capacity, along with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, suggest that the ground state is magnetically frustrated spin glass in nature, having competing magnetic interactions of equivalent energies. DFT results further reveal that the 3$\textit{d}$/5$\textit{d}$-conduction carriers are blocked in the system and act as a barrier for the 4$\textit{f}$–4$\textit{f}$ RKKY interactions, resulting in spin frustration. Presence of vacancy defects in the crystal are also conducive to the spin frustration. This is an unique mechanism of magnetic frustration, not emphasized so far in any of the ternary $R_2TX_3$ ($\textit{R}$ = rare earth, $\textit{T}$ = transition elements, and $\textit{X}$ = Si, Ge, In) type compounds. Due to the competing character of the itinerant 3$\textit{d}$ and localized 4$\textit{f}$ moments, the compound exhibits anomalous field dependence of magnetic coercivity. Further, the system also exhibits a considerable magnetic entropy change of –Δ$S_M$ ~ 13.3 J/kg K with a relative cooling power (RCP) of 220 J/kg and adiabatic temperature change $ΔT_{\text{ad}}$ of 6 K for magnetic field change of 70 kOe.

Nonlinear magnons and exchange Hamiltonians of the delafossite proximate quantum spin liquid candidates KYbSe 2 and NaYbSe 2

Quantum spin liquids (QSLs) are theoretical states of matter with long-range entanglement and exotic quasiparticles. However, they generally elude quantitative theory, rendering their underlying phases mysterious and hampering efforts to identify experimental QSL states. Here we study triangular-lattice resonating-valence-bond QSL candidate materials KYbSe 2 and NaYbSe 2 . We measure the magnon modes in their 1/3 plateau phase, where quantitative theory is tractable, using inelastic neutron scattering and fit them using nonlinear spin wave theory. We also fit the KYbSe 2 heat capacity using high-temperature series expansion. Both KYbSe 2 fits yield the same magnetic Hamiltonian to within uncertainty, confirming previous estimates and showing the Heisenberg ratio J 2 / J 1 to be an accurate model for these materials. Most importantly, comparing KYbSe 2 and NaYbSe 2 shows that the smaller A -site Na + ion has a larger J 2 / J 1 ratio. However, hydrostatic pressure applied to KYbSe 2 increases the ordering temperature (a result consistent with density functional theory calculations), indicating that pressure decreases J 2 / J 1 . In conclusion, these results show how the periodic table and hydrostatic pressure can tune the A YbSe 2 materials in a controlled way.

Itinerant ferromagnetism in transition metal dichalcogenide moiré superlattices

Moiré materials are artificial crystals formed at van der Waals heterojunctions that have emerged as a highly tunable platform that is able to realize much of the rich quantum physics of electrons in atomic scale solids, and in several cases even new quantum phases of matter. Here we use finite-size exact diagonalization methods to explore the physics of single-band itinerant electron ferromagnetism in semiconductor moiré materials. As a result, we predict where ferromagnetism is likely to occur in triangular-lattice moiré systems, and where it is likely to yield the highest Curie temperatures.

Composition dependence of bulk properties in the Co-intercalated transition metal dichalcogenide $\mathrm{Co_{1/3}TaS_2}$

Spontaneous Hall conductivity has recently been reported in the triangular lattice antiferromagnet Co 1/3 TaS 2 under a zero magnetic field. This phenomenon originates from the distinctive noncoplanar triple-Q magnetic ground state, possessing uniform real-space Berry curvature characterized by scalar spin chirality. We investigated the physical properties of Co 1/3 TaS 2 by judiciously controlling the composition, revealing a drastic change in its bulk properties, even by slight variations in cobalt composition, despite the same crystal structure. For 0.299≤x≤0.325, Co x TaS 2 keeps all the characteristics of the ground state consistent with the previous studies—two antiferromagnetic phase transitions at T N1 and T N2 ( N1 ), a large spontaneous Hall conductivity [σ xy (H=0)], and a weak ferromagnetic moment along the c axis. However, samples with x≥0.330 exhibit distinct bulk properties, including the absence of both σ xy (H=0) and the weak ferromagnetic moment. Our neutron diffraction data reveal that Co x TaS 2 with x≥0.330 develops coplanar helical magnetic order with q m1 =(1/3, 0, 0). This is entirely different from what has been seen in x≤0.325, explaining the observed composition dependence.

Frustrated Ising charge correlations in the kagome metal ScV 6 Sn 6

Here we resolve the real-space nature of the high-temperature, short-range charge correlations in the kagome metal ScV 6 Sn 6 . Diffuse scattering appears along a frustrated wave vector q H = ($\frac{1}{3}, \frac{1}{3}, \frac{1}{2}$) at temperatures far exceeding the charge order T CO = 92 K, preempting long-range charge order with wave vectors along q$_{\bar{K}}$ = ($\frac{1}{3}, \frac{1}{3}, \frac{1}{3}$). Using a combination of real space and reciprocal space analysis, we resolve the nature of the interactions between the primary out-of-plane Sc-Sn chain instability and the secondary strain-mediated distortion of the in-plane V kagome network. Finally, a minimal model of the diffuse scattering data reveals a high-temperature, short-ranged "zig-zag" phase of in-plane correlations that maps to a frustrated triangular lattice Ising model with antiferromagnetic interactions and provides a real-space understanding of the origin frustrated charge order in this material.

SU(4) Chiral Spin Liquid, Exciton Supersolid, and Electric Detection in Moiré Bilayers

We propose a moiré bilayer as a platform where exotic quantum phases can be stabilized and electrically detected. Moiré bilayers consist of two separate moiré superlattice layers coupled through the interlayer Coulomb repulsion. In the small distance limit, an SU(4) spin can be formed by combining layer pseudospin and the real spin. As a concrete example, we study an SU(4) spin model on triangular lattice in the fundamental representation. By tuning a three-site ring exchange term K ~ ( t 3 /U 2 ), we find the SU(4) symmetric crystallized phase and an SU (4) 1 chiral spin liquid at the balanced filling. We also predict two different exciton supersolid phases with interlayer coherence at imbalanced filling under displacement field. Especially, the system can simulate an SU(2) Bose-Einstein condensation by injecting interlayer excitons into the magnetically ordered Mott insulator at the layer polarized limit. Smoking gun evidences of these phases can be obtained by measuring the pseudospin transport in the counterflow channel.

Artificial Magnetic Tripod Ice

We study the collective behavior of interacting arrays of nanomagnetic tripods. These objects have six discrete moment states, in contrast to the usual two states of an Ising-like moment. Our experimental data demonstrate that triangular lattice arrays form a “tripod ice” that exhibits charge ordering among the effective vertex magnetic charges, in direct analogy to artificial kagome spin ice. The results indicate that the interacting tripods have effective moments that act as emergent local variables, with strong connections to the well-studied Potts and clock models. In addition, the tripod moments display a tendency toward a nearest neighbor alignment in our thermalized samples that separates this system from kagome spin ice. In conclusion, our results open a path toward the study of the collective behavior of nonbinary moments that is unavailable in other physical systems.

First-principles characterization of the magnetic properties of Cu 2 (OH) 3 Br

Low-dimensional spin-1/2 transition metal oxides and oxyhalides continue to be at the forefront of research investigating nonclassical phases such as quantum spin liquids. In this work, we examine the magnetic properties of the oxyhalide Cu 2 (OH) 3 Br in the botallackite structure using first-principles density functional theory, linear spin-wave theory, and exact diagonalization calculations. This quasi-two-dimensional system consists of Cu 2+ S = 1/2 moments arranged on a distorted triangular lattice. Our exact diagonalization calculations, which rely on a first-principles-based magnetic model, generate spectral functions consistent with inelastic neutron scattering data. By performing computational experiments to disentangle the chemical and steric effects of the halide ions, we find that the dominant effect of the halogen ions is steric in the Cu 2 (OH) 3 X series of compounds.
