Forecast analysis of optical waveguide bus performance

Elements to be considered in the design of a data bus include: architecture; data rate; modulation, encoding, detection; power distribution requirements; protocol, work structure; bus reliability, maintainability; interterminal transmission medium; cost; and others specific to application. Fiber- optic data bus considerations for a 32 port transmissive star architecture, are discussed in a tutorial format. General optical-waveguide bus concepts, are reviewed. The electrical and optical performance of a 32 port transmissive star bus, and the effects of temperature on the performance of optical-waveguide buses are examined. A bibliography of pertinent references and the bus receiver test results are included.

Integrated optic waveguide devices

Integrated optic waveguide circuits with a phase bias and modulator on the same chip were designed, fabricated, and tested for use in a fiber-optic rotation sensor (gyro) under development. Single mode fiber-optic pigtails were permanently coupled to the four ports of the chip. The switch format was based on coherent coupling between waveguides formed in Z-cut LiNbO3. The control of the coupling was achieved by electro-optically varying the phase propagation constants of each guide. Fiber-to-chip interfacing required the development of appropriate fixturing and manipulation techniques to achieve the close tolerance needed for high coupling efficiency between a fiber with an approximately 5 micron m core and a channel guide with a roughly 2 micron m by 5 micron m cross section. Switch and chip performance at 0.85 micron m is discussed as well as potential improvements related to insertion loss reduction, switching voltages, and suppression of Li2O out-diffusion.

Support assembly for cryogenically coolable low-noise choke waveguide

A compact cryogenically coolable choked waveguide for low-noise input coupling into a cryogenically cooled device, such as a maser or parametric amplifier, utilizes coaxial stainless steel support tubes surrounding the waveguide and connected in cascade to provide a folded low thermal conduction path. The edges of the tubes connected are welded.

Single-mode laser studies: Design and performance of a fixed-wave length source and coupling of lasers to thin-film optical waveguides

A module developed for the generation of a stable single wavelength to be used for a fiber optic multiplexing scheme is described. The laser is driven with RZ pulses, and the temperature is stabilized thermoelectrically. The unit is capable of maintaining a fixed wavelength within about 6 A as the pulse duty cycle is changed between 0 and 100 percent. This is considered the most severe case, and much tighter tolerances are obtainable for constant input power coding schemes. Using a constricted double heterostructure laser, a wavelength shift of 0.083 A mA is obtained due to laser self-heating by a dc driving current. The thermoelectric unit is capable of maintaining a constant laser heat-sink temperature within 0.02 C. In addition, miniature lenses and couplers are described which allow efficient coupling of single wavelength modes of junction lasers to thin film optical waveguides. The design of the miniature cylinder lenses and the prism coupling techniques allow 2 mW of single wavelength mode junction laser light to b coupled into thin film waveguides using compact assemblies. Selective grating couplers are also studied.

Improved cooling design for high power waveguide system

Testing of X band high power components in a traveling wave resonator indicates that this improved cooling design reduces temperature in the waveguide and flange. The waveguide power handling capability and power transmission reliability is increased substantially.

Four- and five-layer silicon-clad dielectric waveguides

Computer modeling studies conducted on four-layer silicon-clad dielectric waveguides indicate that the attenuation (alpha) and mode index (beta/K) behave as exponentially damped sinusoids as the silicon thickness is increased. The observed effect can be explained quite simply as a periodic coupling between the guided modes of the lossless structure and the lossy modes supported by the high-refractive index silicon. The attenuation and mode index are significantly altered by conductivity changes in the silicon; an amplitude modulator and an intensity modulator were proposed using these results. Predicted high attenuations in the device may be reduced significantly with a silicon dioxide buffer layer between the semiconductor and the polystyrene guide. Experimental confirmation of the predicted characteristics is still necessary. A number of thin-silicon film waveguides have been RF sputtered but attenuation measurements to verify the damped oscillatory behavior are forthcoming. Conductivity variations of the silicon should demonstrate the modulation capabilities.

Estimating Waveguide Feed Directivity and Spacing

Approximate curves simplify initial steps of antenna design. Maximum achievable directivity exponents plotted as functions of element spacing in wavelengths for equilateral triangular array of rectangular waveguides. Directivities and exponents calculated for circular waveguides, pyramidal horns, and other standard feeds. Designer quickly estimates element spacing necessary to achieve required directivity or directivity achievable.

Cooling Waveguide Flanges in Microwave Transmitters

Flang appendage circulates coolant for conductive heat removal. Flange appendage bore accomodates coolant tube. O-ring surrounds bore; when adjacent waveguide sections are bolted together, continuous conduit is formed for coolant. Pressure release groove in modified flange prevents coolant from entering waveguide should O'ring seal fail.

Slotted waveguide array antennas for spaceborne SAR applications

Starting with mission definitions and constraints for the NASA proposed Shuttle Active Microwave Experiments (SAMEX) and Free Flying Imaging Radar Experiment (FIREX), Hughes Aircraft Company has compiled and studied the technology available for slotted waveguide planar array antennas suitable for spaceborne SAR application. Antenna performance is derived, and fabrication techniques are discussed. Mission requirements will always lead to an aperture subdivided into waveguide modules, thereby validating a module definition for other mission building blocks. Finally, a specific design is proposed for a SAMEX mission using the modules as RF aperture building blocks, resulting in a (nominal) 15.1 meter by 5.5 meter extensile dual polarized L-, C-, and X-band planar array with an associated extensile graphite/epoxy support structure. Antenna development begin with a fabrication method development study involving a representative portion of an antenna module.

Wave attenuation and mode dispersion in a waveguide coated with lossy dielectric material

The modal attenuation constants in a cylindrical waveguide coated with a lossy dielectric material are studied as functions of frequency, dielectric constant, and thickness of the dielectric layer. A dielectric material best suited for a large attenuation is suggested. Using Kirchhoff's approximation, the field attenuation in a coated waveguide which is illuminated by a normally incident plane wave is also studied. For a circular guide which has a diameter of two wavelengths and is coated with a thin lossy dielectric layer (omega sub r = 9.1 - j2.3, thickness = 3% of the radius), a 3 dB attenuation is achieved within 16 diameters.

Polarization effects in silicon-clad optical waveguides

By changing the thickness of a semiconductor cladding layer deposited on a planar dielectric waveguide, the TE or TM propagating modes may be selectively attenuated. This polarization effect is due to the periodic coupling between the lossless propagating modes of the dielectric slab waveguide and the lossy modes of the cladding layer. Experimental tests involving silicon claddings show high selectivity for either polarization.

Circular waveguide bifurcation for asymmetric modes

An analytical solution for a circular waveguide bifurcation with incident TE(11)- and TM(11)-modes is presented using the residue calculus method. It is shown how the coupling between the TE(1n)- and TM(1n)-modes can be taken into account by expressing the coupling factor as a contour integral, which is the key step enabling the residue calculus method to be applied. Graphical results for the scattering matrix parameters of the junction are given for a range of waveguide radii of interest in the design of dual-mode coaxial prime focus feeds for paraboloidal antennas.

A leaky magnetohydrodynamic waveguide model for the acceleration of high-speed solar wind streams in coronal holes

It is now reasonably well established that there is a correlation between high-speed solar wind streams and coronal holes. It has been concluded that a significant addition of momentum and/or energy in the region of supersonic flow is needed to explain the observed particle flux and flow speed observed in the high-speed streams. The most likely source of this additional momentum appears to be magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves propagating up from the solar surface. The present investigation is concerned with the propagation of MHD waves in a structure of finite transverse size, taking into account the consequences for the acceleration of high-speed solar wind streams. A waveguide solution for a model coronal hole is described, giving attention to a geometric or ray analysis of the slab waveguide, a wave mode analysis, an analytic solution of the dispersion relation for high-frequency waves, and the calculation of the time-averaged wave force.

An experimental TE sub 12 - TE sub 11 circular waveguide mode converter

Theoretical and experimental results for a prototype TE sub 12 to TE sub 11 circular waveguide mode converter are discussed. The system which requires such device, the high power Ka-Band transmitter is described briefly. A short review of coupled mode theory is given, and the theoretical performance of the final converter design is given. Experimental results for the fabricated converter are presented and compared with theory. A method of identifying the various circular waveguide modes in a multimode device is described. Given the close agreement between the theoretical predictions and experimental results, the computer code may be used with confidence in the design of future multimode tapers and mode converters.

A simple circular-polarized antenna: Circular waveguide horn coated with lossy magnetic material

A circular waveguide horn coated with a lossy material in its interior wall can be used as an alternative to a corrugated waveguide for radiating a circularly polarized (CP) field. To achieve good CP radiation, the diameter of the structure must be larger than the free-space wavelength, and the coating material must be sufficiently lossy and magnetic. This device is cheaper and lighter in weight than the corrugated one.

Single mode acoustic fiber waveguide

The single mode operation of a clad rod acoustic waveguide is described. Unlike conventional clad optical and acoustic waveguiding structures which use modes confined to a central core surrounded by a cladding, this guide supports neither core nor cladding modes but a single interface wave field on the core-cladding boundary. The propagation of this bound field and the potential improved freedom from spurious responses is discussed.

Channel waveguides in glass via silver-sodium field-assisted ion exchange

Multimode channel waveguides have been formed in sodium aluminosilicate glass by field-assisted diffusion of Ag(+) ions from vacuum-evaporated Ag films. The two-dimensional refractive index profiles of the waveguides were controlled by varying the diffusion time, the diffusion temperature, and the electric field strength. Estimates of the diffusion rate through a strip aperture were obtained, assuming the electric field was strong 120-240 V/mm. The maximum change in refractive index in the sodium aluminosilicate glasses was estimated near 65 percent of the change in soda-lime silicate glass. The physical properties of the glasses are given in a table.

The 1- to 4-K refrigeration techniques for cooling masers on a beam waveguide antenna

The status of technology is reported for various 1- to 4-K commercially available refrigeration systems capable of producing 1.5-K refrigeration to cool masers and superconducting cavity oscillators on the proposed beam waveguide antenna. The design requirements for the refrigeration system and the cryostat are presented. A continuously operating evaporation refrigerator that uses capillary tubing to provide a continuous, self-regulating flow of helium at approximately 1.5 K has been selected as the first refrigerator design for the beam waveguide antenna.
