Determination of rare-earth elements in Luna 16 regolith sample by chemical spectral method

An analysis was made of regolith from layer A of the Luna 16 sample for rare earth elements, by a chemical spectral method. Chemical and ion exchange concentrations were used to determine the content of 12 elements and Y at the level 0.001 to 0.0001 percent with 10 to 15 percent reproducibility of the emission determination. Results within the limits of reproducibility agree with data obtained by mass spectra, activation, and X-ray fluorescent methods.

LOXT mirror design study

The final report for the large orbiting X-ray telescope (LOXT) high resolution mirror design study is presented. The following tasks were performed: (1) Generation of a reference and alternate preliminary design for the LOXT high resolution mirror assembly, which will meet the LOXT scientific requirements, and are within the present state of the art of materials and fabrication techniques. (2) Measurement, in X-rays, of the scattering properties of a variety of optical flats, embodying materials, coatings, and polishing techniques which might be applicable to the flight configuration LOXT high resolution mirror. (3) Preparation of a procurement specification for a paraboloid test mirror of the size of the innermost paraboloid of the high resolution mirror assembly, including the design requirements for the reference design evolved from this preliminary design study. The results of the engineering and scientific analysis and the conclusions drawn are presented. The procurement specification for the test mirror is included.

A study of two flares on 8 July 1968 in the light of their ionospheric effects.

Detailed study of the observed ionospheric effects of the X-ray flare on July 8, 1968, which was of considerable importance both from the ionospheric and solar physics point of view. The associated optical flare was of importance 3B. The ionospheric effects were examined in order to derive a suitable physical model of flare-induced ionization below 100 km, and hence to estimate the spectral characteristics of the ionizing radiations from the observed SID s. The electron loss coefficients below 70 km height calculated from the formula developed in the analysis are in agreement with available data.

Investigation of ultraviolet interstellar extinction

Results concerning interstellar extinction in the ultraviolet are reported. These results were initially obtained by using data from main-sequence stars and were extended to include supergiants and emission stars. The principal finding of the analysis of ultraviolet extinction is not only that it is wavelength dependent, but that if changes with galactic longitude in the U3 passband (lambda sub eff = 1621 A); it does not change significantly in the U2 passband (lambda sub eff = 2308 A). Where data are available in the U4 passband (lambda sub eff = 1537 A), they confirm the rapid rise of extinction in the ultraviolet found by other investigators. However, in all cases, emission stars must be used with great caution. It is important to realize that while extinction continues to rise toward shorter wavelengths in the ultraviolet, including the shortest ultraviolet wavelengths measured (1100 A), it no longer plays an important role in the X-ray region (50 A).

Study of recrystallization and devitrification of lunar glass

The technique of differential thermal analysis (DTA) was applied to the study of the Apollo 17 orange soil (74220,63) and the Apollo 16 glass coated anorthite (64455,21). These glasses show accentuated exotherms of strain relief in the annealing range which is indicative of rapid cooling. These are amenable to interpretation by comparison to the known history of synthetic glasses. Synthetic glasses were prepared whose similarity in behavior between the lunar glasses and their synthetic analogs is striking. Approximate rates of cooling of the lunar glasses were determined from comparative DTA of lunar and synthetic glasses and from the determination of the relation of strain relief in the annealing range to quench rate. At higher temperatures the glasses show exotherms of crystallization. The crystallization products associated with the exothermic reactions have been identified by X-ray diffraction and the surface morphologies developed by strain relief and crystallization have been characterized with scanning electron microscopy.

Design of the solar X-ray instrument for OSO-H.

The OSO-H solar X-ray instrument monitors X rays from the sun in the energy range 1-300 keV, as well as the charged particle background. The electronics provide accurate logarithmic pulse-height analysis at the high counting rates expected under flare conditions. A high time resolution mode enables tudy the temporal development of a solar flare.

Extragalactic cosmic rays.

A detailed analysis is given of the possibility that a large part of the primary cosmic-ray flux is of extragalactic origin. The problems encountered in theories of galactic cosmic rays are first critically discussed. The objections that have previously been raised to extragalactic theories, particularly on energetic grounds, are then examined. The general problem of the propagation of cosmic rays which are ejected from galactic nuclei or in galactic winds to fill clusters and superclusters is dealt with next. Attention is also given to the limits which are set on the presence of extragalactic cosmic rays by observations of high-energy electrons and background X-rays and gamma rays, or the heating of a hypothetical intergalactic gas. Observable effects of cosmic rays between galaxies are studied, and the possible sources of the local cosmic-ray protons in the extragalactic model are considered.

Experimental study of spectral and spatial distribution of solar X-rays

The study of the physical conditions within the solar corona and the development of instrumentation and technical expertise necessary for advanced studies of solar X-ray emission are reported. Details are given on the Aerobee-borne-X-ray spectrometer/monochromator and also on the observing program. Preliminary discussions of some results are presented and include studies of helium-like line emission, mapping O(VII) and Ne(IX) lines, survey of O(VII) and Ne(IX) lines, study of plage regions and small flares, and analysis of line emission from individual active regions. It is concluded that the use of large-area collimated Bragg spectrometers to scan narrow wavelength intervals and the capability of the SPARCS pointing control to execute a complex observing program are established.
