Plausible indication of gamma-ray absorption by dark matter in NGC 1068

NGC 1068 is the brightest extragalactic source in high-energy neutrinos as seen by IceCube, yet the accompanying gamma-ray flux is orders of magnitude weaker. It has been argued that this indicates that the bulk of neutrinos and gamma rays are emitted in the innermost vicinity of the central supermassive black hole, which is transparent to neutrinos, but opaque to gamma rays. Even in such extreme scenarios for the acceleration of cosmic rays, astrophysical models typically overestimate the low-energy gamma-ray flux and/or require some fine-tuning in the physical parameters. Here, in this work, we suggest instead that the dark matter surrounding the supermassive black hole may absorb the gamma rays, inducing the observed deficit. We show that for a dark matter–photon scattering cross section in the range σ DM−γ /m DM ≃ 10 −28 −10 −30 cm 2 /GeV, Fermi-LAT measurements can be well reconciled with IceCube data. We also present some simple particle physics examples that achieve the correct spectral energy dependence while respecting complementary constraints.

Updating the MCNP neutron guide extension for supermirror absorption, gamma production, and neutron polarization

As supermirror technology has developed, there is a trend towards higher m-values for supermirrors which propagate more neutrons with higher divergence to experimental areas. These supermirrors have thousands of alternating layers of typically nickel and titanium with varying thicknesses deposited on the surface. Neutrons of grazing incidence are reflected from these layers with a probability dependent on the angle of incidence and the wavelength of the neutron. Those neutrons that are not reflected may be captured in the supermirror layers and produce high energy gamma rays that require shielding. The supermirror extension for MCNP has been updated to estimate the capture of neutrons in the supermirror layers of a neutron guide through the banking of photons in a virtual supermirror layer and the reduction of the weight of the neutrons transmitted into the substrate. A new functionality has been added to simulate neutron polarization specifically in the context of a supermirror polarizer for neutron beamlines. In conclusion, the underlying theory, code implementation in MCNP, and examples of gamma production and a V-cavity polarizer will be discussed.

Pulse radiolysis and transient absorption spectra of aqueous solutions of sodium sulfamate

Chemical kinetics for the reactions of sulfamate ions (NH 2 SO 3 − ) with the primary products of water and nitric acid radiolysis were measured in aqueous solutions at ambient temperature. Using time-resolved electron pulse radiolysis techniques with a custom multichannel detection system, we examined the reactivity of NH 2 SO 3 − with the hydroxyl radical ( • OH), hydrogen atom (H • ), and nitrate radical (NO 3 • ). The sulfamate ion was found to react with • OH and H • with second-order rate coefficients of k • OH = (5.60 ± 0.04) × 10 6 M −1 s −1 and k H • = (7.96 ± 0.10) × 10 6 M −1 s −1 , respectively, and with NO 3 • with a rate coefficient of k NO 3 • = (1.67 ± 0.06) × 10 7 M −1 s −1 . The reactions of NH 2 SO 3 − with • OH and H • resulted in the formation of two transient radical species, one with maximum absorbance at 300 nm and a second with maxima at both 300 nm and 600 nm. These spectra are tentatively assigned to • NH 2 SO 3 and • NHSO 3 − , respectively. By measuring the absorbance of these radicals as a function of pH, the radical pK a was determined to be 9.5 ± 0.1. Overall, this work has implications for the longevity and performance of ferrous sulfamate, Fe(NH 2 SO 3 ) 2 , as a plutonium reductant in the reprocessing of used nuclear fuel.

NH 3 -Mediated Reactive Capture and Conversion: Integrating CO 2 Absorption from Flue Gas with CO Production via NH 4 HCO 3 Electrolysis

Efficient carbon capture and utilization require strategies that minimize energy penalties of CO 2 regeneration and compression. Reactive capture and conversion (RCC) address this challenge by integrating capture with direct electrochemical conversion. Here, we show an NH3-mediated tandem RCC system that couples capture of CO 2 from simulated flue gas (10% v/v CO 2 in N 2 ) with electroreduction of NH 4 HCO 3 to CO over a Ni single-atom catalyst (Ni-SAC). Speciation modeling and capture experiments revealed that a deep CO 2 capture with C/N ratio of 0.65 was achieved using 2.5 M NH 3 from simulated flue gas. Electrolysis of the resulting NH 4 HCO 3 on the Ni- SAC delivered an 85% CO Faradaic efficiency at 100 mA/cm 2 with excellent tolerance to NH 3 /NH 4 + as confirmed by DFT calculations and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations. Further, the technoeconomic analysis established a levelized total cost of CO manufacturing of $25.43/kmol, gauging the practical viability. Overall, this study holds great potential to decarbonize the chemical manufacturing industry while reducing synthetic production costs.

Acquisition of absorption and fluorescence spectral data using chatbots

Spectra – the lifeblood of photochemistry – have been very difficult to find in the literature. Chatbots, remarkably, may enable their more efficient acquisition and prove to be generally powerful tools for searching the scientific literature.

Excited-state structural conformations of Fe-amido photosensitizers revealed by picosecond X-ray absorption spectroscopy

Ultrafast X-ray spectroscopy and modelling were used to characterize distortions in the photo-generated quintet state of Fe sensitizers bearing hybrid N-heterocycle/amido ligands. Photoexcitation induces a 0.10–0.35 Å Fe–N elongation that is smaller for d(Fe–N amido ) compared to d(Fe-N heterocycle ), suggesting that the partial expansion of the Fe–N bonds involving the N-heterocyclic ligands is critical to the rapid population of ligand-field states.
