Conceptual design study of an improved gas turbine powertrain

The conceptual design for an improved gas turbine (IGT) powertrain and vehicle was investigated. Cycle parameters, rotor systems, and component technology were reviewed and a dual rotor gas turbine concept was selected and optimized for best vehicle fuel economy. The engine had a two stage centrifugal compressor with a design pressure ratio of 5.28, two axial turbine stages with advanced high temperature alloy integral wheels, variable power turbine nozzle for turbine temperature and output torque control, catalytic combustor, and annular ceramic recuperator. The engine was rated at 54.81 kW, using water injection on hot days to maintain vehicle acceleration. The estimated vehicle fuel economy was 11.9 km/l in the combined driving cycle, 43 percent over the 1976 compact automobile. The estimated IGT production vehicle selling price was 10 percent over the comparable piston engine vehicle, but the improved fuel economy and reduced maintenance and repair resulted in a 9 percent reduction in life cycle cost.

New technology and vehicle operation on roadways

Some concepts towards the optimum movement of vehicles on highways are presented. It is stressed that in proper perspective, the private automobile is one element of several modes of transportation. The modal mix in the long run is determined by proper land use planning, population density, and historic growth patterns. Discussion investigates the two main interacting elements of the highway in the dynamic state: the roadway and the driver operated vehicle, noting that the inefficiencies of the system are caused by the uncoordinated and disassociated actions of the two elements. Also discussed are vehicle operations on streets, highways, and freeways, on board communication, control, and guidance, systems considerations and traffic management, and benefits of optimized vehicle operations on roadways.

Mathematical concepts for modeling human behavior in complex man-machine systems

Many human behavior (e.g., manual control) models have been found to be inadequate for describing processes in certain real complex man-machine systems. An attempt is made to find a way to overcome this problem by examining the range of applicability of existing mathematical models with respect to the hierarchy of human activities in real complex tasks. Automobile driving is chosen as a baseline scenario, and a hierarchy of human activities is derived by analyzing this task in general terms. A structural description leads to a block diagram and a time-sharing computer analogy.

Fibre-Optic Semiconductor Temperature Gage

"Safe" temperature gage for explosive liquids is based on optical transmission. Semiconductor crystal inserted between input and output optical fibers is temperature-sensing element in a new approach to measuring temperature of cryogens. Since no electrical components are immersed in liquid, new sensor minimizes danger of electrically ignited explosions in hazardous cryogens such as oxygen and hydrogen. Gage also useful for handling noncryogenic liquids in aircraft, automobiles, boats and water tanks.

Self-Correcting Electronically-Scanned Pressure Sensor

High-data-rate sensor automatically corrects for temperature variations. Multichannel, self-correcting pressure sensor can be used in wind tunnels, aircraft, process controllers and automobiles. Offers data rates approaching 100,000 measurements per second with inaccuracies due to temperature shifts held below 0.25 percent (nominal) of full scale over a temperature span of 55 degrees C.

Engine-Vibration Analyzer

Proposed circuit would monitor vibration spectrum of engines under test or in service. It could detect subtle out-of-specification conditions and could be programed to shut down engine if an out-of-limits condition develops. Possible uses of monitor are in bench testing automobiles and outboard motors and as a safety device in very critical engine applications.

Modular Engine Instrumentation System

System that provides information and measurements never obtained before in real time has been developed. System shows not only real-time measurements but also results of computations of key combustion parameters in meaningful and easily understood display. Standard commercially-available shaft encoder plus data from pressure transducer act as principal drivers to device. Eventually, modular system could be developed into onboard controller for automobile engines.

Yielding Torque-Tube System Reduces Crash Injuries

Yielding torque-tube system minimizes injuries by limiting load transferred to occupant in crash. When properly integrated into seat structure, torque tube yields in plastic deformation stage of material and maintains a relatively constant resistance to applied torque for many degrees of rotation. Yielding torque-tube system is expected to find application in aircraft and automobile industries.

Effects of street traffic noise in the night

The relationship between automobile traffic noise and the degree of disturbance experience experienced at night was explored through a random sample survey of 1600 individuals in rural and urban areas. The data obtained were used to establish threshold values.

Longitudinal grooves for bluff body drag reduction

Wind tunnel test results are presented for four axisymmetric bluff body configurations in order to determine their effect on form and pressure drag. It was found that drag reductions on the order of 40% are obtainable with an afterbody incorporating four longitudinal 'V' grooves. Although this effect may be due to the functioning of the grooves as longitudinal, continuous vortex generators, it is concluded that further research is needed to elucidate the physical basis of the test results. Optimization of the effect will be useful in base drag reduction for such vehicles as automobiles and cargo aircraft with sharply upswept afterbodies.

Fatigue in Multidirectional Composites

Data in new report on fatique properties of graphite/epoxy composites prove valuable to designers of aircraft, space vehicles, and automobiles. Graphite/epoxy composites are being used increasingly in lightweight load-bearing structures, and fatigue of such structures is always major concern of designers.

Dual-Alloy Disks are Formed by Powder Metallurgy

High-performance disks have widely varying properties from hub to rim. Dual property disk is fabricated using two nickel-base alloys, AF-115 for rim and Rene 95 for hub. Dual-alloy fabrication may find applications in automobiles, earth-moving equipment, and energy conversion systems as well as aircraft powerplants. There is potential for such applications as shafts, gears, and blades.

Can-Filled Crash Barrier

Crash barrier composed largely of used aluminum beverage cans protects occupants of cars in collisions with poles or trees. Lightweight, can-filled barrier very effective in softening impact of an automobile in head-on and off-angle collisions. Preliminary results indicate barrier is effective in collisions up to 40 mi/h (64 km/h).

Repairing Voids and Delaminations in Composite Materials

Proposed tool forces adhesive into cracks. After inlet and outlet holes have been drilled to proper depth, alinement pin is inserted in inlet hole. Adhesive fills void or is forced into delamination, expanding delamination slightly to ensure full penetration. Potential applications in repair of fiber-reinforced components, boats, storage tanks, and some automobile bodies.

Inserts Automatically Lubricate Ball Bearings

Inserts on ball-separator ring of ball bearings provide continuous film of lubricant on ball surfaces. Inserts are machined or molded. Small inserts in ball pockets provide steady supply of lubricant. Technique is utilized on equipment for which maintenance is often poor and lubrication interval is uncertain, such as household appliances, automobiles, and marine engines.
