Energy straggling and radiation reaction for magnetic bremsstrahlung.

Using the method of quantum electrodynamics, the energy distribution of particles and emitted photons is calculated for the case when increases in the average energy of the photon emitted by synchrotron radiation to values appreciable compared to the energy of the particle give rise to particle energy straggling and radiation spectrum broadening. The classical radiative reaction effects which may be tested in this type of experiment are outlined, and a detailed quantum mechanical calculation is presented. The significance of energy straggling in astrophysics is discussed briefly.

Soft X-ray bremsstrahlung and fluorescent line production in the atmosphere by low energy electrons

The effect of low energy quasi-trapped or precipitating electrons which impact on the counter windows of soft X-ray detectors are discussed. The errors caused by X-rays produced in the residual atmosphere above a rocket-borne detector because of the resemblance to X-rays of cosmic origin are examined. The design and development of counter windows which make it possible to identify the atmospherically produced X-rays are described. Curves are presented to show the following: (1) preliminary low energy electron data from Atmospheric Explorer C, (2) X-ray flux in electron-excited nitrogen and oxygen, (3) typical proportional counter response to low energy cosmic rays, and (4) proportional counter response to X-radiation produced by electrons incident upon a gas of oxygen to nitrogen number of 0.4.

Impulsive solar X-ray bursts. 4: Polarization, directivity and spectrum of the reflected and total bremsstrahlung radiation from a beam of electrons directed toward the photosphere

A Monte Carlo method is described for evaluation of the spectrum, directivity and polarization of X-rays diffusely reflected from stellar photospheres. the accuracy of the technique is evaluated through comparison with analytic results. Using the characteristics of the incident X-rays of the model for solar X-ray flares, the spectrum, directivity and polarization of the reflected and the total X-ray fluxes are evaluated. The results are compared with observations.

The generation of gravitational waves. III - Derivation of bremsstrahlung formulae

Formulas are derived describing the gravitational waves produced by a stellar encounter of the following type. The two stars have stationary (i.e., nonpulsating) nearly Newtonian structures with arbitrary relative masses; they fly past each other with an arbitrary relative velocity; and their impact parameter is sufficiently large that they gravitationally deflect each other through an angle that is small as compared with 90 deg.

Post-Newtonian gravitational bremsstrahlung

Formulae and numerical results are presented for the gravitational radiation emitted during a low-deflection encounter between two massive bodies. Results are valid through post-Newtonian order within general relativity. The gravitational waveform, the total luminosity and total emitted energy, the angular distribution of emitted energy, and the frequency spectrum are discussed in detail. A method boosting the accuracy of these quantities to post Newtonian order is also presented. A numerical comparison of results with those of Peters, and of Kovacs and Thorne shows that the post Newtonian method is reliable to better than 0.1 percent at v = 0.1 c, to a few percent at v = 0.35 c, and to 10 to 20 percent at v = 0.5 c.

Post-Newtonian gravitational bremsstrahlung

Formulas and numerical results for the gravitational radiation emitted during a low-deflection encounter between two massive bodies are presented. The results are valid through post-Newtonian order within general relativity. The gravitational waveform (transverse-traceless part of the metric perturbation tensor), the total luminosity and total emitted energy, the angular distribution of emitted energy (antenna pattern), and the frequency spectrum are discussed. A method of boosting the accuracy of these quantities to post-3/2-Newtonian order is presented. A numerical comparison of the results with previously reported results shows that the post-Newtonian method is reliable to better than 0.1% at v = 0.1c, to a few percent at v = 0.35c, and to 10-20% at v = 0.5c.
