A guide to the National Space Science Data Center

This is the second edition of a document that was published to acquaint space and Earth research scientists with an overview of the services offered by the NSSDC. As previously stated, the NSSDC was established by NASA to be the long term archive for data from its space missions. However, the NSSDC has evolved into an organization that provides a multitude of services for scientists throughout the world. Brief articles are presented which discuss these services. At the end of each article is the name, address, and telephone number of the person to contact for additional information. Online Information and Data Systems, Electronic Access, Offline Data Archive, Value Added Services, Mass Storage Activities, and Computer Science Research are all detailed.

The Sub-bureau for Atmospheric Angular Momentum of the International Earth Rotation Service - A meteorological data center with geodetic applications

By exchanging angular momentum with the solid portion of the earth, the atmosphere plays a vital role in exciting small but measurable changes in the rotation of our planet. Recognizing this relationship, the International Earth Rotation Service invited the U.S. National Meteorological Center to organize a Sub-bureau for Atmospheric Angular Momentum (SBAAM) for the purpose of collecting, distributing, archiving, and analyzing atmospheric parameters relevant to earth rotation/polar motion. These functions of wind and surface pressure are being computed with data from several of the world's weather services, and they are being widely applied to the research and operations of the geodetic community. The SBAAM began operating formally in October 1989, and this article highlights its development, operations, and significance.

SatCORPS Hybridized Cloud Product Data Storage: The Design of a Hybrid Data Repository That Leverages the Strengths of the Cloud and the Data Center

There is a strong demand for the near real time NASA Langley Satellite ClOud and Radiation Property retrieval System (SatCORPS) products. As important as real-time information, archived copies of the products form the basis for targeted research focusing on specific events or conditions. To make these SatCORPS products available for downloading, the SatCORPS group has developed a number of tools and technologies to create a hybrid data storage system that leverages the strengths of both cloud and on-premises resources. In this work, we describe the technologies the group uses to marshal disparate data repositories and materialize them into a single searchable overview and give a broad description of the organization of the dataset. As with any implementation, the strengths, weaknesses and constraints surrounding the components establish priorities and provide insight where trade-offs are necessary. We further describe the design and architecture underpinning our hybrid data repository and delivery system.

Visualizing an Exascale Data Center Digital Twin: Considerations, Challenges and Opportunities

Digital twins are an excellent tool to model, visualize, and simulate complex systems, to understand and optimize their operation. In this work, we present the technical challenges of real-time visualization of a digital twin of the Frontier supercomputer. We show the initial prototype and current state of the twin and highlight technical design challenges of visualizing such a large High Performance Computing (HPC) system. The goal is to understand the use of augmented reality as a primary way to extract information and collaborate on digital twins of complex systems. This leverages the spatio-temporal aspect of a 3D representation of a digital twin, with the ability to view historical and real-time telemetry, triggering simulations of a system state and viewing the results, which can be augmented via dashboards for details. Finally, we discuss considerations and opportunities for augmented reality of digital twins of large-scale, parallel computers.

Software-Defined Data Center Network Architecture using VXLAN-based BGP EVPN for Dynamic Workflows in a Supercomputing Environment (VXLAN-based BGP EVPN Fabric for HPC) v1

This software repository automates the deployment of a multi-vendor VXLAN-based BGP EVPN architecture, leveraging Containerlab to instantiate a stretched CLOS topology. It integrates Linux, Nokia SR Linux, and Arista cEOS, using BGP for underlay, overlay, and topology extension. The software enables rapid prototyping and testing of advanced network configurations. Its key advantage lies in providing a dynamic, programmable environment for research and development of critical technologies supporting dynamic workflows within supercomputing environments, surpassing the limitations of static, vendor-locked alternatives by fostering interoperability and agility.

Mixed domain coherent link with electrically reconfigurable IMDD and coherent modes for O-band data center applications

We report the first O-band link with electrically reconfigurable intensity-modulation direct-detection (IMDD) and coherent operation using custom silicon photonic chips packaged with commercial electronic chips. Transmission below the KP4-FEC threshold is shown using commercial 53 Gbaud PAM4 digital signal processing (DSP) for 16QAM (200 Gbps/ λ ) and PAM4 (100 Gbps/ λ ). Efficient operation of the packaged full link at 12 and 11.2 pJ/bit is achieved for the PAM4 and 16QAM modes, respectively.

Los Alamos National Laboratory Reclaimed Water Usage for Data Centers: A Case Study

Water is a valuable resource that is all too often ignored when thinking about sustainability and High-Performance Computing (HPC). Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) found a solution to eliminate the amount of potable water usage needed for cooling HPC facilities. The Sanitary Effluent Reclamation Facility (SERF) was constructed in 2013 with the main purpose of removing silica from water in Los Alamos, New Mexico, to increase the cycles of concentration for the HPC Complex. SERF enabled Los Alamos National Laboratory to remove silica, reclaim effluent from the wastewater treatment plant and reduce the usage of potable water for HPC cooling.

Data Center Immersion Cooling: A Case Study and Summary of High-Performance Computing Cooling Technologies

The future of High Performance Computing (HPC) is carved out for all high-performance facilities. As computer processing increases exponentially, especially with the demand for AI training, more speed will equate to more computing density and ultimately more power draw and resource demand. Sandia National Laboratories has not seen or known of anything that would lead us to think this might change in the next 5 to 10 years.
