Ternary Potassium‐Bismuth‐Telluride Intermetallic Support Promotes Electrochemical Stability in Potassium Metal Anodes

We employed accumulative roll bonding to fabricate self‐standing metallurgical composite of in situ formed alkaline potassium‐bismuth‐telluride intermetallic K 2 (Bi 2/6 Te 3/6 Vac 1/6 ) embedded in potassium metal. This newly discovered thermodynamically stable potassiophilic crystal, termed “KBT”, is fcc antifluorite with K 2 Te archetype. Symmetric cells achieve 880 h of cycling at 0.5 mA cm −2 and 0.5 mAh cm −2 . Potassium metal battery (KMB) with Prussian blue (PB) cathode in carbonate electrolyte retains 80% capacity after 200 cycles at 1C. In ether‐based electrolyte with organic cathode, it achieves 80% retention after 900 cycles at 2C. Combined synchrotron X‐ray nano‐tomography, cryogenic‐focused ion beam microscopy (Cryo‐FIB) and sputter‐down X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) demonstrate uniform electrodeposits, versus baseline of potassium filaments intermixed with pores and coarse SEI. Binary K 3 Bi‐K and K 2 Te‐K intermetallic supports also provide improved electrochemical performance, albeit to lesser extent. Multiscale simulation provides insight into role of support structure in adatom energetics, film nucleation, early‐stage SEI morphology and interfacial stability.

Interface Modifications of Lithium Metal Anode for Lithium Metal Batteries

Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) enable much higher energy density than lithium–ion batteries (LIBs) and thus hold great promise for future transportation electrification. However, the adoption of lithium metal (Li) as an anode poses serious concerns about cell safety and performance, which has been hindering LMBs from commercialization. To this end, extensive effort has been invested in understanding the underlying mechanisms theoretically and experimentally and developing technical solutions. In this review, we devote to providing a comprehensive review of the challenges, characterizations, and interfacial engineering of Li anodes in both liquid and solid LMBs. Finally, we expect that this work will stimulate new efforts and help peer researchers find new solutions for the commercialization of LMBs.

Solvation Environment and Interface Dynamics of Li 2 B 12 H 12 and Li 2 B 12 F 12 Electrolytes Uncovered by Theory and Operando Optical and FTIR Spectroelectrochemistry

In this work, we evaluated two closo-borate salts (Li 2 B 12 H 12 and Li 2 B 12 F 12 ) in propylene carbonate from theoretical and experimental perspectives to understand how the coordination environment influences their spectroscopic and electrochemical properties. The coordination environments of the closo-borate salts were modeled via density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD). Vibrational spectra calculated from the predicted coordination environments are in agreement with experimentally measured steady-state FTIR data. This theoretical investigation also suggested that Li 2 B 12 F 12 would possess a higher ionic conductivity than Li 2 B 12 H 12 , which was corroborated experimentally. Additionally, an electrochemical cell was designed and fabricated that enabled operando optical and FTIR spectroelectrochemical (OP-IR-SEC) measurements. This allowed for the simultaneous measurement of the relative changes of species at a lithium electrode-liquid electrolyte interface and the visualization of lithium plating at the electrode surface. This technique could provide new chemical insights and potentially link optical changes at the electrode–electrolyte interface to specific chemical species in similar electrochemical systems. The Li 2 B 12 F 12 electrolyte was found to have a higher thermal stability, which may find utility in applications for batteries that are subject to high-temperature conditions.

Shorting at Long Duration: Impact of Extended Discharge Capacity on Battery Solid Electrolytes

Long-duration energy storage (LDES) is critical to a stable, resilient, and decarbonized electric grid. While batteries are emerging as important LDES devices, extended, high-power discharges necessary for cost-competitive LDES present new materials challenges. Here, focusing on a new generation of low-temperature molten sodium batteries, we explore here unique phenomena related to long-duration discharge through a well-known solid electrolyte, NaSICON. Specifically, molten sodium symmetric cells at 110°C were cycled at 0.1 A cm -2 for 1-23 h discharges. Longer discharges led to unstable overpotentials, reduced resistances, and decreased electrolyte strength, caused by massive sodium penetration not observed in shorter duration discharges. Scanning electron microscopy informed mechanisms of sodium penetration and even “healing” during shorter-duration cycling. Importantly, these findings show that traditional, low-capacity, shorter-duration tests may not sufficiently inform fundamental materials phenomena that will impact LDES battery performance. This case highlights the importance that candidate LDES batteries be tested under pertinent long-duration conditions.
