SRF Resonators for a bi-directional Energy Ramping Upgrade of the Isotope Production Facility Beamline at LANL

The LANL Isotope Production Facility (IPF) is one of the two high-current proton linear accelerators operated under the auspices of the DOE Office of Nuclear Physics Isotope Development and Production for Research Applications Program. The IPF beamline operates with a fixed 100-MeV energy proton beam, diverted from the LANSCE accelerator and guided towards the isotope production target station. The fixed beam energy limits the number of isotopes that can be produced at IPF, and adversely affects the purity of isotopes produced at non-optimal energies. In particular, the IPF program is receiving increasing numbers of requests for high purity isotopes such as Np-236 (national security applications) and Re-186 (medical therapy). These are typically produced via (p,n) and (p,2n) nuclear reactions, requiring very tight control of the incident energies on the production targets to ensure an end product with a high radionuclidic purity. It is well known that this level of energy control cannot be achieved when a 100 MeV beam of mono-energetic protons is degraded to the required energies, typically below 30 MeV, as too much energy spread is acquired. Operating the IPF beamline at lower, mono-energetic beam energies such as at 40 MeV will allow the required tight energy control in target assemblies to ensure a high purity product. In addition, NP has requested a LANL/BNL/ORNL collaboration focus on establishing a national large-scale production capability for the therapy isotope Ac-225. Recent nuclear cross section measurements done at LANL show that due to a steep rise in production cross section towards higher proton energies (See Figure 2), proton beams at energies substantially greater than 100 MeV will be highly beneficial for Ac-225 production [AC255]. Such higher-energy beams cannot be delivered to IPF at present. Lower-energy beams (70 MeV and 40 MeV) can be delivered but only in sole-use mode; all other LANSCE users must be offline during 70 MeV or 40 MeV operation.

Machine Learning Enhanced Development of Functionally Graded Materials Enabled by Directed Energy Deposition

The ability to functionally grade materials provides designers with a new dimension of design flexibility that can be leveraged to improve functionality, reduce cost, or improve efficiency in a wide range of applications. This program was specifically focused on FGMs for hot and harsh gas path environments. These environments are common for the hot sections of jet engines and gas turbines, where parts undergo high temperature and mechanical loads in a corrosive environment. Expensive high γ' strengthened Ni superalloys such as René 41 (R41) and René 80 (R80) are generally used exclusively for a whole part, although only a section of the part demands such superalloys. To minimize cost, low/no γ' strengthened Ni superalloys such as Inconel 718 (INC718) could be used at less-demanding sections of the part could be welded to the high γ' strengthened Ni superalloys. However, the welding typically is a failure site due to the low durability at the welding interface. Functionally grading provides a welding alternative that can allow cost reduction without sacrificing mechanical performance.

In-Situ Powder-Directed Energy Process Control for Additively Manufactured Multi-Layer, Functionally Graded Components

Coatings and cladding can experience damage in harsh environments: Erosion Oxidation Delamination External mechanical damage Radiation induced damage Functionally Graded Materials (FGMs) were primarily designed to reduce thermal stress in thermal barrier coatings (TBCs), but can produce coatings which resist a variety of material damage (corrosion, surface damage, diffusion) Powder-fed DED with multiple independent feeders allows for AM FGMs, and provides robust control over process parameters to optimize microstructure and performance. FGMs have a great opportunity for applications in energy applications as a strategy to increase plant efficiency and lifetime.

New bimetallic EMF cell shows promise in direct energy conversion

Concentration cell, based upon a thermally regenerative cell principle, produces electrical energy from any large heat source. This experimental bimetallic EMF cell uses a sodium-bismuth alloy cathode and a pure liquid sodium anode. The cell exhibits reliability, corrosion resistance, and high current density performance.

Direct energy inputs to the middle atmosphere

As a working definition of the extent of the middle atmosphere (MA), the height range from 30 to 100 km was adopted. The neutral and ionic composition and the dynamics within this height range are, for the most part, poorly understood. From available information, the importance of various particle and photon energy sources, including their variability, for ionization of the neutral atmosphere in this height range is assessed. The following topics are discussed: (1) penetration of the MA by particle and electromagnetic energy; (2) ionization sources for the MA; (3) galactic cosmic rays; (4) solar H Ly alpha, other EUV, and X-rays; (5) magnetospheric electrons and bremsstrahlung X-rays; and (6) solar cosmic rays.
