An X-ray survey of a complete sample of 3CR radio galaxies

The X-ray survey of the galaxies, 40 in all, was made with the Einstein Observatory. By comparing the distributions of X-ray luminosities, it is found that 3CR galaxies with double radio morphology (FR 2) and optical emission-line spectra tend to be the more powerful X-ray emitters, with broad-line galaxies at the top of the distribution. It is also found that the X-ray luminosity is strongly correlated with the 5 GHz radio nuclear luminosity. Through an analysis of the complete optical and radio sample with the Spearman partial rank correlation technique, it is determined that nuclear radio luminosity at 5 GHz is correlated with both total radio luminosity at 178 MHz and with galaxy optical luminosity. Other weaker correlations are found of the X-ray luminosity with the total radio luminosity at 178 MHz and the optical luminosity of the galaxy. The results are seen as underlining the importance of nuclear phenomena in radio galaxies and indicating a nuclear origin of their X-ray emission. In addition, it is found that the 3CR emission-line galaxies are similar to both Seyfert galaxies and quasars with double radio morphology in their X-ray properties, strongly reinforcing a unified picture of active nuclei.

Preliminary description of double drive tube 68002/68001

Apollo 16 double drive tube 68002/68001 has been opened, and information on its contents and structure is now available. The sample was taken in Apr. 1972 at Station 8, a gently undulating surface of South Ray Crater ejecta material. The tube was driven into the surface about 2 m from the edge of a 10-15 m diameter crater in an area where small (less than 0.5 m diameter) craters are common. Fragments of the less than 1 cm diameter size are most abundant in this area. The top section, 68002, and the lower section, 68001, have a combined length of about 61 cm.

Synchronous Separation, Seaming, Sealing and Sterilization (S4) using Brazing for Sample Containerization and Planetary Protection

The return of samples back to Earth in future missions would require protection of our planet from the risk of bringing uncontrolled biological materials back with the samples. This protection would require “breaking the chain of contact (BTC)”, where any returned material reaching Earth for further analysis would have to be sealed inside a container with extremely high confidence. Therefore, the acquired samples would need to be contained while destroying any potential biological materials that may contaminate the external surface of the container. A novel process that could be used to contain returning samples has been developed and demonstrated in a quarter scale size. The process consists of brazing using non-contact induction heating that synchronously separates, seams, seals and sterilizes (S4) the container. The use of brazing involves melting at temperatures higher than 500°C and this level of heating assures sterilization of the exposed areas since all carbon bonds (namely, organic materials) are broken at this temperature. The mechanism consists of a double wall container with inner and outer shells having Earth-clean interior surfaces. The process consists of two-steps, Step-1: the double wall container halves are fabricated and brazed (equivalent to production on Earth); and Step-2 is the S4 process and it is the equivalent to the execution on-orbit around Mars. In a potential future mission, the double wall container would be split into two halves and prepared on Earth. The potential on-orbit execution would consist of inserting the orbiting sample (OS) container into one of the halves and then mated to the other half and brazed. The latest results of this effort will be described and discussed in this manuscript.

A fully redundant double difference algorithm for obtaining minimum variance estimates from GPS observations

In double differencing a regression system obtained from concurrent Global Positioning System (GPS) observation sequences, one either undersamples the system to avoid introducing colored measurement statistics, or one fully samples the system incurring the resulting non-diagonal covariance matrix for the differenced measurement errors. A suboptimal estimation result will be obtained in the undersampling case and will also be obtained in the fully sampled case unless the color noise statistics are taken into account. The latter approach requires a least squares weighting matrix derived from inversion of a non-diagonal covariance matrix for the differenced measurement errors instead of inversion of the customary diagonal one associated with white noise processes. Presented is the so-called fully redundant double differencing algorithm for generating a weighted double differenced regression system that yields equivalent estimation results, but features for certain cases a diagonal weighting matrix even though the differenced measurement error statistics are highly colored.

PMA-Linked Fluorescence for Rapid Detection of Viable Bacterial Endospores

The most common approach for assessing the abundance of viable bacterial endospores is the culture-based plating method. However, culture-based approaches are heavily biased and oftentimes incompatible with upstream sample processing strategies, which make viable cells/spores uncultivable. This shortcoming highlights the need for rapid molecular diagnostic tools to assess more accurately the abundance of viable spacecraft-associated microbiota, perhaps most importantly bacterial endospores. Propidium monoazide (PMA) has received a great deal of attention due to its ability to differentiate live, viable bacterial cells from dead ones. PMA gains access to the DNA of dead cells through compromised membranes. Once inside the cell, it intercalates and eventually covalently bonds with the double-helix structures upon photoactivation with visible light. The covalently bound DNA is significantly altered, and unavailable to downstream molecular-based manipulations and analyses. Microbiological samples can be treated with appropriate concentrations of PMA and exposed to visible light prior to undergoing total genomic DNA extraction, resulting in an extract comprised solely of DNA arising from viable cells. This ability to extract DNA selectively from living cells is extremely powerful, and bears great relevance to many microbiological arenas.

Subharmonic Oscillations and Chaos in Dynamic Atomic Force Microscopy

The increasing use of dynamic atomic force microscopy (d-AFM) for nanoscale materials characterization calls for a deeper understanding of the cantilever dynamics influencing scan stability, predictability, and image quality. Model development is critical to such understanding. Renormalization of the equations governing d- AFM provides a simple interpretation of cantilever dynamics as a single spring and mass system with frequency dependent cantilever stiffness and damping parameters. The renormalized model is sufficiently robust to predict the experimentally observed splitting of the free-space cantilever resonance into multiple resonances upon cantilever-sample contact. Central to the model is the representation of the cantilever sample interaction force as a polynomial expansion with coefficients F(sub ij) (i,j = 0, 1, 2) that account for the effective interaction stiffness parameter, the cantilever-to-sample energy transfer, and the amplitude of cantilever oscillation. Application of the Melnikov method to the model equation is shown to predict a homoclinic bifurcation of the Smale horseshoe type leading to a cascade of period doublings with increasing drive displacement amplitude culminating in chaos and loss of image quality. The threshold value of the drive displacement amplitude necessary to initiate subharmonic generation depends on the acoustic drive frequency, the effective damping coefficient, and the nonlinearity of the cantilever-sample interaction force. For parameter values leading to displacement amplitudes below threshold for homoclinic bifurcation other bifurcation scenarios can occur, some of which lead to chaos.

Observations of a Newly "Captured" Magnetosheath Field Line: Evidence for "Double Reconnection"

We have begun an investigation of the nature of the low-latitude boundary layer in the mid-altitude cusp region using data from the Polar spacecraft. This region has been routinely sampled for about three months each year for the periods 1999-2001 and 2004-2006. The low-to-mid-energy ion instruments frequently observed dense, magnetosheath-like plasma deep (in terms of distance from the magnetopause and in invariant latitude) in the magnetosphere. One such case, taken during a period of northward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF), shows magnetosheath ions within the magnetosphere with velocity distributions resulting from two separate merging sites along the same field lines. Cold ionospheric ions were also observed counterstreaming along the field lines, evidence that these field lines were closed. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that double merging can produce closed field .lines populated by solar wind plasma. Through the use of individual cases such as this and statistical studies of a broader database we seek to understand the morphology of the LLBL as it projects from the sub-solar region into the cusp. We will present preliminary results of our ongoing study.

K-Ar dating of lunar fines - Apollo 12, Apollo 14, and Luna 16.

K-Ar ages were determined on a 6-in. double-focus mass spectrometer in fines of less than 1 mm from Apollo 14 and 16, and Luna 16 lunar soil samples. Age estimates of about 2.8 AE and about 4.0 AE are suggested for the two low-K components whose presence in the samples must be assumed to accommodate the age data. An average value of 0.1849 plus or minus 0.0008 was obtained for the Ar-18/Ar-36 ratio in the solar wind from ordinate intercept correlations for the Apollo 14 and Luna 16 samples. Cosmic ray exposure ages were close to 440 m.y. for both Apollo 14 samples and close to 840 m.y. for both Luna 16 samples.

The exact numerical calculation of propeller noise

This paper presents a method for computing the acoustic pressure signature of a propeller due to blade thickness and steady surface pressure loading including the effect of forward motion. The tip helical speed is restricted to subsonic. The formulation is based on the Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings exact result concerning the sound generation by moving bodies. The blade surface is described in a helical coordinate system by the blade angles, positions of the leading and trailing edges along the local pitch helix, and the camber and thickness distributions along the chord. The retarded distance of the moving acoustic source on an element of surface area of the propeller blade is obtained numerically by Newton's method. The surface integration over the propeller blades is carried out in the helical coordinate system using a double Gauss-Legendre formula. Good agreement was found between analytic and experimental results, both in the time and frequency domains. Some samples showing the effects of propeller geometry and tip Mach number on the acoustic signature are included.

Heat loss and drag of spherical drop tube samples

Analysis techniques for three aspects of the performance of the NASA/MSFC 32 meter drop tube are considered. Heat loss through the support wire in a pendant drop sample, temperature history of a drop falling through the drop tube when the tube is filled with helium gas at various pressures, and drag and resulting g-levels experienced by a drop falling through the tube when the tube is filled with helium gas at various pressures are addressed. The developed methods apply to systems with sufficiently small Knudsen numbers for which continuum theory may be applied. Sample results are presented, using niobium drops, to indicate the magnitudes of the effects. Helium gas at one atmosphere pressure can approximately double the amount of possible undercooling but it results in an apparent gravity levels of up to 0.1 g.

Participation of Ethylene in Two Modes of Gravistimulation of Shoots

In order to elucidate the role of ehtylene in gravitropism, detailed time courses for ethylene production in horizontal and upright plants were measured. Tomato and pea were chosen as examples of plants which exhibit different patterns of gravitropic curvature. Tomato seedlings were placed in gas-tight lucite boxes from which air was sampled and analyzed for ethylene. During the first 2 min interval after one set of plants was turned horizontal ethylene production was double the baseline. Similarly, plants rotated 3 rpm about a vertical axis transiently doubled ethylene production when the axis was shifted 90 deg. In order to clarify the role of this 2-min burst, the effect of exogenous ethylene was studied. In peas, epicotyls were excised, equilibrated until wound ethylene had subsided to a low stable level, and ethylene production was measured in vertical and horizontal segments. As for tomatoes, excised pea epicotyls increased their rate of ethylene production during the first 2 min of gravistimulation. Also, very low concentrations of exogenous ethylene slightly enhance curvature. On the other hand, higher levels of ethylene and 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) inhibit overall curvature.

A 21 cm survey of the Pisces-Perseus supercluster. III - The region north of +38 degrees

As part of a comprehensive survey of galaxies in the region of the Pisces-Perseus supercluster and its surroundings, 21-cm line observations obtained with the NRAO 91-m telescope are presented for 383 galaxies in the right ascension range from 22 to 10 hr and north of +38 deg declination. Recent improvements to the Green Bank receiver/feed system have dramatically raised detection rates at the distance of Pisces-Perseus (cz = +5000 km/s). The present study has contributed to double the number of known redshifts outside rich clusters in this section of the sky. The H I content of the current sample, as expressed in terms of the H I mass expected for a galaxy of the same optical size and morphology, matches the standard of normalcy established for isolated galaxies.

Using single buffers and data reorganization to implement a multi-megasample fast Fourier transform

Data ordering in large fast Fourier transforms (FFT's) is both conceptually and implementationally difficult. Discribed here is a method of visualizing data orderings as vectors of address bits, which enables the engineer to use more efficient data orderings and reduce double-buffer memory designs. Also detailed are the difficulties and algorithmic solutions involved in FFT lengths up to 4 megasamples (Msamples) and sample rates up to 80 MHz.

Mars Data Analysis Program

Grant NAGS12158 addressed a major NASA objective concerning the possibility of a palm ocean or large lake in the northern lowlands of Mars. Our overall approach for this study was an analysis of the graben-bounded giant polygons of Utopia Planitia, but specifically those grabens that define circles rather than open polygons. These circular grabens overlie buried impact craters, and the grabens form because of differential compaction of the overlying material over crater rims and floors. Several years ago, I predicted that the graben circles would bound depressions, and that the depths of these depressions would scale with the diameters of the graben circles. These predictions have been verified by earlier analysis. During this one-year grant (with one-year no-cost extension) we greatly increased the sample size and validated the earlier research robustly. What remained unexplained was why most of the graben circles in Utopia Planitia were double. A new model, involving volumetric compaction rather than simply 2-D compaction, satisfactorily explains the double rings and also provides a measure of relative thickness of the cover material burying the craters as a function of radial distance from the center of the Utopia Basin. Only two materials are likely candidates for the compacting cover material: volcanic ash, or wet sediment. The water in the wet sediment is largely responsible for the volumetric compaction; dry ash will compact vertically but experiences very limited lateral shrinkage. Thus the depressions within the circular grabens and the model explaining the double rings strongly favor wet sediment and thus provide evidence in favor of a past body of standing water in the northern lowlands. Metal-Poor, Strongly Star-Forming Galaxies in the DEEP2 Survey: The Relationship Between Stellar Mass, Temperature-Based Metallicity, and Star Formation Rate

We report on the discovery of 28 redshift (z) approximately equal to 0.8 metal-poor galaxies in DEEP2. These galaxies were selected for their detection of the weak [O (sub III)] lambda 4363 emission line, which provides a "direct" measure of the gas-phase metallicity. A primary goal for identifying these rare galaxies is to examine whether the fundamental metallicity relation (FMR) between stellar mass, gas metallicity, and star formation rate (SFR) holds for low stellar mass and high SFR galaxies. The FMR suggests that higher SFR galaxies have lower metallicity (at fixed stellar mass). To test this trend, we combine spectroscopic measurements of metallicity and dust-corrected SFR with stellar mass estimates from modeling the optical photometry. We find that these galaxies are 1.05 plus or minus 0.61 dex above the redshift (z) approximately 1 stellar mass-SFR relation and 0.23 plus or minus 0.23 dex below the local mass-metallicity relation. Relative to the FMR, the latter offset is reduced to 0.01 dex, but significant dispersion remains dex with 0.16 dex due to measurement uncertainties). This dispersion suggests that gas accretion, star formation, and chemical enrichment have not reached equilibrium in these galaxies. This is evident by their short stellar mass doubling timescale of approximately equal to 100 (sup plus 310) (sub minus 75) million years which suggests stochastic star formation. Combining our sample with other redshift (z) of approximately 1 metal-poor galaxies, we find a weak positive SFR-metallicity dependence (at fixed stellar mass) that is significant at 94.4 percent confidence. We interpret this positive correlation as recent star formation that has enriched the gas but has not had time to drive the metal-enriched gas out with feedback mechanisms.

The Lyα Luminosity Function and Cosmic Reionization at z ~ 7.0: A Tale of Two LAGER Fields

We present the largest-ever sample of 79 Lyα emitters (LAEs) at z ~ 7.0 selected in the COSMOS and CDFS fields of the LAGER project (the Lyman Alpha Galaxies in the Epoch of Reionization). Our newly amassed ultradeep narrowband exposure and deeper/wider broadband images have more than doubled the number of LAEs in COSMOS, and we have selected 30 LAEs in the second field CDFS. We detect two large-scale LAE-overdense regions in the COSMOS that are likely protoclusters at the highest redshift to date. We perform injection and recovery simulations to derive the sample incompleteness. We show that significant incompleteness comes from blending with foreground sources, which, however, has not been corrected in LAE luminosity functions (LFs) in the literature. The bright-end bump in the Lyα LF in COSMOS is confirmed with six (two newly selected) luminous LAEs (LLyα > 1043.3 erg s−1). Interestingly, the bump is absent in CDFS, in which only one luminous LAE is detected. Meanwhile, the faint-end LFs from the two fields agree well with each other. The six luminous LAEs in COSMOS coincide with two LAE-overdense regions, while such regions are not seen in CDFS. The bright-end LF bump could be attributed to ionized bubbles in a patchy reionization. It appears associated with cosmic overdensities and thus supports an inside-out reionization topology at z ~ 7.0, i.e., the high-density peaks were ionized earlier compared to the voids. An average neutral hydrogen fraction of xH I ~ 0.2–0.4 is derived at z ~ 7.0 based on the cosmic evolution of the Lyα LF.

Toxicokinetics of inhaled bromotrifluoromethane (Halon 1301) in human subjects

Bromotrifluoromethane (Halon 1301, CBrF3), is used as a fire extinguishant in the Space Shuttle, where several scenarios, such as a fire or a faulty alarm, could lead to its discharge resulting in a Halon 1301 concentration of up to 1 percent in the cabin atmosphere. The effect of Halon 1301 on mental performance and physiologic function was investigated in a NASA-sponsored human inhalation study in which four pairs of male subjects were each exposed in a double-blind fashion for 24 hr to 1 percent Halon 1301 and to air in two exposures about 1 week apart. Blood and breath samples from the exposed subjects were collected to provide dosimetric and toxicokinetic information. Halon 1301 blood levels increased rapidly and approached a steady state within 2 hr of the beginning the exposure; the steady-state concentration was approximately 3-4.5 microg/ml. Breath samples collected during exposures closely reflected chamber concentrations. Analysis of postexposure blood samples revealed that Halon 1301 was eliminated biphasically with an average t(1/2) alpha and t(1/2) beta of 4.5 min and 200 min, respectively.

Karyotyping of Transformed Human Epithelial Cells from Exposures of Heavy Ions

It is most likely that the untreated transformed single clone (clone #2) cell undergoes unequal segregation of chromosome in two daughter cell that result in 94 chromosome during mitosis, particularly in anaphase stage. Chromosome aberration observed. I. Breakage of part of chromosome 7. II. One additional number of chromosome 8 instead of the total chromosome can only be explained by early abnormal cell division. III. Complete lost of chromosome and translocation and fusion of chromosome 3 and X-chromosome. IV. Our result for translocation and fusion of chromosome 3 and X- Chromosome is conformed by mBAND pattern. There is no different between the transformed parental cell and the single cloned transformed cell. Both harbor the chromosome 5 and 16 translocation and both harbor has the trisomy chromosome 20. Transformed cells may have the number of chromosomes greater or less than 46. Doubling of chromosome numbers is a signature of tumor. Chromosomal aberration was observed on HBEC-3kt non-irradiated-soft agar (Clone #2) sample, and indication of chromosome instability in the tumor development process.
