Measurement of R = σ L / σ T and the separated longitudinal and transverse structure functions in the nucleon-resonance region

Here we report on a detailed study of longitudinal strength in the nucleon resonance region, presenting new results from inclusive electron-proton cross sections measured at Jefferson Lab Hall C in the four-momentum transfer range 0.2 < Q 2 < 5.5 GeV 2 . The data have been used to accurately perform over 170 Rosenbluth-type longitudinal/transverse separations. The precision R = $\sigma_{L} /\sigma _{T}$ data are presented here, along with the first separate values of the inelastic structure functions F 1 and F L in this regime. The resonance longitudinal component is found to be significant. With the new data, quark-hadron duality is observed above Q 2 = 1 GeV 2 in the separated structure functions independently.

Classical double copy of nonsingular black holes

We apply the classical double copy procedure to a class of regular, non-singular black hole solutions. We give several examples, paying particular attention to a string-theory-corrected black hole solution emerging from T-duality. Non-perturbative stringy corrections introduce an ultraviolet (UV) zero-point length cutoff which results in non-singular black hole spacetimes. Apart from the UV regulator, the solution is equivalent to the Bardeen black hole spacetime. We extend this solution to include an asymptotic de Sitter background. All Yang-Mills field theory quantities associated with the double copy are well-behaved and finite for all values of parameters. Furthermore, we present a thorough analysis of the black hole horizon structure, additionally uncovering a simple yet new connection between horizons on the gravity side and electric fields on the gauge theory side of the double copy.

UV massive resonance from IR double copy consistency

From the perspective of effective field theory (EFT), Wilson coefficients of the low energy theory are determined by integrating out modes of the full ultraviolet (UV) theory. The spectrum can be in principle resummed if one has access to all available infrared (IR) coefficients at low energies. In this work we show that there exists a general class of consistent massive resonance double-copy (CMRDC) models where UV massive residues are reconstructed through double-copy consistency conditions between the IR Wilson coefficients of the full EFT expansion. Through a color-dual bootstrap, we find surprisingly that double-copy consistency alone introduces the kinematic factors of CMRDC models that soften high energy behavior by exponentiating color-dual contacts. This bootstrap suggests that our massive resonance paradigm is an inevitable consequence of the duality between color and kinematics, thereby providing a path towards emergent UV structure directly from the IR. We then demonstrate how CMRDC models can capture a spectrum of massive modes compatible with general multiplicity, and use Padé extrapolation to solve the inverse problem of identifying massive UV resonance from a small number of IR Wilson coefficients. Universal rapidity scaling of entanglement entropy inside hadrons from conformal invariance

When a hadron is probed at high energy, a nontrivial quantum entanglement entropy inside the hadron emerges due to the lack of complete information about the hadron wave function extracted from this measurement. In the high-energy limit, the hadron becomes a maximally entangled state, with a linear dependence of entanglement entropy on rapidity, as has been found in a recent analysis based on parton description. In this paper, we use an effective conformal field theoretic description of hadrons on the light cone to show that the linear dependence of the entanglement entropy on rapidity found in parton description is a general consequence of approximate conformal invariance and does not depend on the assumption of weak coupling. Our result also provides further evidence for a duality between the parton and string descriptions of hadrons. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

QCD Running Coupling in the Nonperturbative and Near-Perturbative Regimes

We use analytic continuation to extend the gauge-gravity duality nonperturbative description of the strong force coupling into the transition, near-perturbative, regime where perturbative effects become important. By excluding the unphysical region in coupling space from the flow of singularities in the complex plane, we derive a specific relation between the scales relevant at large and short distances; this relation is uniquely fixed by requiring maximal analyticity. The unified effective coupling model gives an accurate description of the data in the nonperturbative and the near-perturbative regions.

Peak‐in‐Valley Metal Nano‐Architectures via E‐Beam‐Guided Metal Oxide Redox

Focused electron beams enable nanoscale material modification via localized etching or deposition. In liquid-phase electron-beam-mediated processing, radiolysis-driven redox reactions present an opportunity to control both etching and deposition simultaneously. Here, this duality using a water-ammonia solvent as a tunable redox mediator on copper surfaces is demonstrated. At lower ammonia concentrations, the oxidation process dominates, etching copper to sub-50-nm depths. The copper ions and ion-complexes released during this initial oxidation step are reduced by solvated electrons resulting in metal deposition into the etched sites, over longer e-beam exposures, producing characteristic peak-in-valley nanostructures. Conversely, at higher ammonia concentrations copper-ammine ion complexation and radiolytic oxidizing species scavenging by ammonia occur at higher rates, creating a reducing environment conducive to rapid beam-guided copper deposition. Reaction-transport simulations and experiments are performed to show the effects of ammonia-mediated radiolysis chemistry, describing the direct influence of solvent concentration on redox balance and the outcome of e-beam guided processing. By uniting both etching and deposition within a single framework, this work provides a versatile route for controlled surface nanostructuring.

Enhanced Laplace Pressures for Functional Surfaces: Wicking, Switchability, and Selectivity

Abstract Wetting functionalities of rough surfaces are largely determined by the Laplace pressure generated across liquid–gas interfaces formed within surface structures. Typically, rough wetting surfaces create negative Laplace pressures, enabling capillary wicking, while rough non‐wetting surfaces create positive Laplace pressures, exhibiting fluid repellency. Here, with microfabricated reentrant structures, it is shown that the same surface can exhibit either a negative or positive Laplace pressure, regardless of its intrinsic wettability. This material‐independent Laplace pressure duality enables or enhances a range of wetting functionalities including wicking, switchability, and selectivity. On the same surface, capillary rise, capillary dip, and the combination of the two which leads to further enhancement of the total sustainable capillary height and Laplace pressure, the driving force for wicking is demonstrated. Further, active switching of wetting states between the hemiwicking and the repellent Cassie state on reentrant structures is shown. Moreover, with a water‐hexane mixture system, selective wetting of reentrant structures are demonstrated, that is, water can be selectively wicked or repelled in the presence of hexane, and vice versa. These functionalities are achieved, which would typically require complex chemical coatings, solely using surface structures, thus largely expanding the design space for a wide range of thermofluidic applications.

Collider phenomenology of a gluino continuum

Continuum supersymmetry is a class of models in which the supersymmetric partners together with part of the standard model come from a conformal sector, broken in the IR near the TeV scale. Such models not only open new doors for addressing the problems of the standard model, but also have unique signatures at hadron colliders, which might explain why we have not yet seen any superpartners at the LHC. Here we use gauge-gravity duality to model the conformal sector, generate collider simulations, and finally analyze continuum gluino signatures at the LHC. Due to the increase in the number of jets produced the bounds are weaker than for the minimal supersymmetric standard model with the same gluino mass threshold.

Quantum complexity of time evolution with chaotic Hamiltonians

We study the quantum complexity of time evolution in large-N chaotic systems, with the SYK model as our main example. This complexity is expected to increase linearly for exponential time prior to saturating at its maximum value, and is related to the length of minimal geodesics on the manifold of unitary operators that act on Hilbert space. Using the Euler-Arnold formalism, we demonstrate that there is always a geodesic between the identity and the time evolution operator e -iHt whose length grows linearly with time. This geodesic is minimal until there is an obstruction to its minimality, after which it can fail to be a minimum either locally or globally. We identify a criterion — the Eigenstate Complexity Hypothesis (ECH) — which bounds the overlap between offdiagonal energy eigenstate projectors and the k-local operators of the theory, and use it to argue that the linear geodesic will at least be a local minimum for exponential time. We show numerically that the large-N SYK model (which is chaotic) satisfies ECH and thus has no local obstructions to linear growth of complexity for exponential time, as expected from holographic duality. In contrast, we also study the case with N = 2 fermions (which is integrable) and find short-time linear complexity growth followed by oscillations. Our analysis relates complexity to familiar properties of physical theories like their spectra and the structure of energy eigenstates and has implications for the hypothesized computational complexity class separations PSPACE * BQP/poly and PSPACE * BQSUBEXP/subexp, and the “fast-forwarding” of quantum Hamiltonians.

Entanglement wedge reconstruction using the Petz map

At the heart of recent progress in AdS/CFT is the question of subregion duality, or entanglement wedge reconstruction: which part(s) of the boundary CFT are dual to a given subregion of the bulk? This question can be answered by appealing to the quantum error correcting properties of holography, and it was recently shown that robust bulk (entanglement wedge) reconstruction can be achieved using a universal recovery channel known as the twirled Petz map. In short, one can use the twirled Petz map to recover bulk data from a subset of the boundary. However, this map involves an averaging procedure over bulk and boundary modular time, and hence it can be somewhat intractable to evaluate in practice. We show that a much simpler channel, the Petz map, is sufficient for entanglement wedge reconstruction for any code space of fixed finite dimension – no twirling is required. Moreover, the error in the reconstruction will always be non-perturbatively small. From a quantum information perspective, we prove a general theorem extending the use of the Petz map as a general-purpose recovery channel to subsystem and operator algebra quantum error correction.

Approaching the self-dual point of the sinh-Gordon model

One of the most striking but mysterious properties of the sinh-Gordon model (ShG) is the b → 1/b self-duality of its S-matrix, of which there is no trace in its Lagrangian formulation. Here b is the coupling appearing in the model’s eponymous hyperbolic cosine present in its Lagrangian, cosh(bΦ). In this paper we develop truncated spectrum methods (TSMs) for studying the sinh-Gordon model at a finite volume as we vary the coupling constant. We obtain the expected results for b << 1 and intermediate values of b, but as the self-dual point b = 1 is approached, the basic application of the TSM to the ShG breaks down. We find that the TSM gives results with a strong cutoff Ec dependence, which disappears according only to a very slow power law in Ec. Standard renormalization group strategies — whether they be numerical or analytic — also fail to improve upon matters here. We thus explore three strategies to address the basic limitations of the TSM in the vicinity of b = 1. In the first, we focus on the small-volume spectrum. We attempt to understand how much of the physics of the ShG is encoded in the zero mode part of its Hamiltonian, in essence how ‘quantum mechanical’ vs ‘quantum field theoretic’ the problem is. In the second, we identify the divergencies present in perturbation theory and perform their resummation using a supra-Borel approximate. In the third approach, we use the exact form factors of the model to treat the ShG at one value of b as a perturbation of a ShG at a different coupling. In the light of this work, we argue that the strong coupling phase b > 1 of the Lagrangian formulation of model may be different from what is naïvely inferred from its S-matrix. In particular, we present an argument that the theory is massless for b > 1.

Even-point multi-loop unitarity and its applications: exponentiation, anomalies and evanescence

Abstract We identify novel structure in newly computed multi-loop amplitudes and quantum actions for even-point effective field theories, including both the nonlinear sigma model (NLSM) and double-copy gauge theories such as Born-Infeld and its supersymmetric generalizations. We exploit special properties of all even-point theories towards establishing an efficient unitarity based amplitude construction. In doing so, we find evidence that the leading IR divergence of NLSM amplitudes exponentiates when the target space is$$ \mathbbm{CP} $$ CP 1 ≅ SU(2)/U(1). We then systematically compute the two-loop anomalous behavior of Born-Infeld, and find that the counterterms needed to restore U(1) invariant behavior at loop-level can be constructed via a symmetric-structure double-copy. We also demonstrate that the divergent part of the one-minus (−+++) two-loop anomaly vanishes upon introducing an evanescent operator. In addition to these purely photonic counterterms, we verify through explicit calculation that the anomalous matrix elements that violate U(1) duality invariance can be alternatively cancelled by summing over internal$$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 4 DBIVA superfields. Finally we find that$$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 4 Dirac-Born-Infeld-Volkov-Akulov (DBIVA) amplitudes admit double-copy construction through two-loop order by reproducing our unitarity based result with a double copy between color-dual$$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 4 super-Yang-Mills and our two-loop NLSM amplitudes. This result supports the possibility of color-dual representations for NLSM beyond one-loop. We conclude with an overview of howD-dimensional four-photon counterterms can be constructed in generality with the symmetric-structure double-copy, and outline a convenient way of counting evanescent operators using Hilbert series as generating functions.

Phase transitions from the fifth dimension

We study the cosmological transition of 5D warped compactifications, from the high-temperature black-brane phase to the low-temperature Randall-Sundrum I phase. The transition proceeds via percolation of bubbles of IR-brane nucleating from the black-brane horizon. The violent bubble dynamics can be a powerful source of observable stochastic gravitational waves. While bubble nucleation is non-perturbative in 5D gravity, it is amenable to semiclassical treatment in terms of a “bounce” configuration interpolating between the two phases. We demonstrate how such a bounce configuration can be smooth enough to maintain 5D effective field theory control, and how a simple ansatz for it places a rigorous lower-bound on the transition rate in the thin-wall regime, and gives plausible estimates more generally. When applied to the Hierarchy Problem, the minimal Goldberger-Wise stabilization of the warped throat leads to a slow transition with significant supercooling. We demonstrate that a simple generalization of the Goldberger-Wise potential modifies the IR-brane dynamics so that the transition completes more promptly. Supercooling determines the dilution of any (dark) matter abundances generated before the transition, potentially at odds with data, while the prompter transition resolves such tensions. We discuss the impact of the different possibilities on the strength of the gravitational wave signals. Via AdS/CFT duality the warped transition gives a theoretically tractable holographic description of the 4D Composite Higgs (de)confinement transition. Our generalization of the Goldberger-Wise mechanism is dual to, and concretely models, our earlier proposal in which the composite dynamics is governed by separate UV and IR RG fixed points. The smooth 5D bounce configuration we introduce complements the 4D dilaton/radion dominance derivation presented in our earlier work.

Entanglement entropy of a superflow

We consider the theory of N free Dirac fermions with a uniformly winding mass, me iqx , in two spacetime dimensions. This theory (which describes for instance a superconducting current in an N-channel wire) has been proposed to have a higher-spin gravity with scalar matter as the large-N dual. To order m 2 , however, thermodynamic quantities in it can be computed using standard general relativity instead. Here, we consider the question if the same is true for the entanglement entropy (EE). By comparing results obtained on two sides of the duality, we find that general relativity indeed accounts correctly for the EE of an interval to order m 2 (and all orders in q).

Double-copy towards supergravity inflation with α-attractor models

A bstract Key to the simplicity of supergravity α -attractor models of inflation are Volkov-Akulov fermions, often in the form of nilpotent superfields. Here we explore the possibility of using the double-copy to construct theories of Dirac-Born-Infeld-Volkov-Akulov (DBIVA) coupled to supergravity. A color-dual bootstrap admits scattering amplitudes involving pions and vectors through five-point tree-level order by order in mass-dimension, but requires the introduction of a Tr( F 3 ) operator. Gauge theories with this operator were recently found to require a tower of higher-derivative operators to be compatible with the duality between color and kinematics. Adjoint-type double-copy construction at its most conservative seems to require the UV completion of DBIVA + pure Poincaré supergravity scattering amplitudes to a family of theories involving DBIVA-like particles coupled to Weyl-Einstein supergravity. We also point out an alternative solution to color-dual gauged pions that allows adjoint double-copy without a tower of higher derivative corrections but at the cost of exchange symmetry between scalars.

Non-isometry, state dependence and holography

We establish an equivalence between non-isometry of quantum codes and state dependence of operator reconstruction, and discuss implications of this equivalence for holographic duality. Specifically, we define quantitative measures of non-isometry and state dependence and describe bounds relating these quantities. In the context of holography we show that, assuming known gravitational path integral results for overlaps between semiclassical states, non-isometric bulk-to-boundary maps with a trivial kernel are approximately isometric and bulk reconstruction approximately state-independent. In contrast, non-isometric maps with a non-empty kernel always lead to state-dependent reconstruction. We also show that if a global bulk-to-boundary map is non-isometric, then there exists a region in the bulk which is causally disconnected from the boundary. Finally, we conjecture that, under certain physical assumptions for the definition of the Hilbert space of effective field theory in AdS space, the presence of a global horizon implies a non-isometric global bulk-to-boundary map.

A canonical purification for the entanglement wedge cross-section

In AdS/CFT we consider a class of bulk geometric quantities inside the entanglement wedge called reflected minimal surfaces. The areas of these surfaces are dual to the entanglement entropy associated to a canonical purification (the GNS state) that we dub the reflected entropy. From the bulk point of view, we show that half the area of the reflected minimal surface gives a reinterpretation of the notion of the entanglement wedge cross-section. We prove some general properties of the reflected entropy and introduce a novel replica trick in CFTs for studying it. The duality is established using a recently introduced approach to holographic modular flow. We also consider an explicit holographic construction of the canonical purification, introduced by Engelhardt and Wall; the reflected minimal surfaces are simply RT surfaces in this new spacetime. We contrast our results with the entanglement of purification conjecture, and finally comment on the continuum limit where we find a relation to the split property: the reflected entropy computes the von Neumann entropy of a canonical splitting type-I factor introduced by Doplicher and Longo.
