Experimental wake survey behind Viking 1975 entry vehicle at angles of attack of 0 deg and 5 deg, Mach numbers from 1.60 to 3.95, and longitudinal stations from 1.0 to 8.39 body diameters

An investigation was conducted to obtain flow properties in the wake of the Viking '75 entry vehicle at Mach numbers from 1.60 to 3.95 and at angles of attack of 0 deg and 5 deg. The wake flow properties were calculated from total and static pressures measured with a pressure rake at longitudinal stations varying from 1.0 to 8.39 body diameters and lateral stations varying from -0.42 to 3.0 body diameters. These measurements showed a a consistent trend throughout the range of Mach numbers and longitudinal distances and an increase in dynamic pressure with increasing downstream position.

Drag characteristics of a disk-gap-band parachute with a nominal diameter of 1.65 meters at Mach numbers from 2.0 to 3.0

Supersonic wind-tunnel tests were conducted with disk-gap-band parachute models having a nominal diameter of 1.65 meters and geometric porosities of 10.0, 12.5, and 15.0 percent. Canopy inflation characteristics, angles of attack, and drag performance are presented for deployment behind forebody base extensions which were free to oscillate in pitch and yaw. The effect of increasing suspension-line length on canopy motions and drag performance is included, and the drag performance of a model with 12.5 percent geometric porosity is compared with results from flight tests of a parachute with a nominal diameter of 12.19 meters.

Effective separation technique for small diameter whiskers.

Description of a technique for separating small-diameter whiskers from the as-grown matt by gently agitating the whisker matts in a solution of deionized or distilled water for six to eight hours. High-strength Al2O3 whiskers were effectively separated by this technique, comprising an average 48% of the original weight of the whisker matt. According to estimation, more than 90% of separated whiskers had diameters between 0.7 and 2.0 microns.

An 810 ft/sec soil impact test of a 2-foot diameter model nuclear reactor containment system

A soil impact test was conducted on a 880-pound 2-foot diameter sphere model. The impact area consisted of back filled desert earth and rock. The impact generated a crater 5 feet in diameter by 5 feet deep. It buried itself a total of 15 feet - as measured to the bottom of the model. After impact the containment vessel was pressure checked. No leaks were detected nor cracks observed.

Recent improvements in overall thruster performance have imposed new constraints on neutralizer performance. The use of compensated grid extraction system requires a reevaluation of neutralizer position. A series of tests were conducted to determine what effect neutralizer cathode geometry has on performance. The parameters investigated included orifice diameter and length, and cathode diameter. Similar tests investigated open and enclosed keeper geometries. Neutralizer position tests with compensated grids suggested positions approximately 10 cm from the accelerator and radially out of the beam envelope should result in satisfactory performance and long life. Operation at keeper current of 1.5 am resulted in lower total neutralizer power, the elimination of tip heater power, and suitable closed loop control of the neutralizer vaporizer.

The NASA/JPL 64-meter-diameter antenna at Goldstone, California: Project report, technical staff, tracking and data acquisition organization

The significant management and technical aspects of the JPL Project to develop and implement a 64-meter-diameter antenna at the Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex in California, which was the first of the Advanced Antenna Systems of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration/Jet Propulsion Laboratory Deep Space Network are described. The original need foreseen for a large-diameter antenna to accomplish communication and tracking support of NASA's solar system exploration program is reviewed, and the translation of those needs into the technical specification of an appropriate ground station antenna is described. The antenna project is delineated by phases to show the key technical and managerial skills and the technical facility resources involved. There is a brief engineering description of the antenna and its closely related facilities. Some difficult and interesting engineering problems, then at the state-of-the-art level, which were met in the accomplishment of the Project, are described. The key performance characteristics of the antenna, in relation to the original specifications and the methods of their determination, are stated.

Four stellar-diameter measurements by a new technique - Amplitude interferometry

Diameters are reported for four late-type giant stars, alpha Boo, alpha Ori, alpha Tau, and beta Peg. The diameters were obtained with a new kind of interferometer designed expressly to operate in the presence of atmospheric fluctuations. The new technique, called amplitude interferometry, is briefly described. The results include measurements of alpha Ori at several wavelengths.

Performance of 75-millimeter-bore bearings using electron-beam-welded hollow balls with a diameter ratio of 1.26

An experimental investigation was performed to determine the rolling element fatigue life of electron beam-welded hollow balls with a diameter ratio (o.d./i.d.) of 1.26 and to determine the operating characteristics of bearings using these hollow balls. Similar bearings with solid balls were also tested and the data compared. The bearings were operated at shaft speeds up to 28,000 rpm with a thrust load of 2200 N (500 lb). Ball failures during the bearing tests were due to flexure fatigue. The solid and hollow ball bearings tested showed little difference in outer race temperatures and indicated the same bearing torque. The 17.5-mm (0.6875-in.) diameter balls were also tested in the five-ball fatigue tester and showed no significant difference in life when compared with the life of a solid ball.

A 20000-hour endurance test of a structurally and thermally integrated 5-cm diameter ion thruster main cathode

A 5-cm diameter mercury ion thruster main cathode has completed over 20,000 hours of operation in an ongoing lifetime endurance test. The cathode operating parameters remained at acceptable performance levels throughout the test, the first 9175 hours of which were part of a thruster endurance test. After 20,000 hours, the cathode discharge was easily restarted, the tip orifice indicated negligible erosion and the tip heater showed no degradation. The cathode-isolator- vaporizer assembly, a major thruster subsystem, has thus successfully demonstrated an operational lifetime capability of 20,000 hours, which is the lifetime goal of the 8-cm diameter auxiliary propulsion ion thruster.

Large Diameter Shuttle Launched-AEM (LDSL-AEM) study

A technical description of a Large Diameter Shuttle Launched-AEM (LDSL-AEM), an AEM base module adapted to carry 5 ft diameter payloads in the shuttle with propulsion for carrying payloads to higher altitude orbits from a 150 NM shuttle orbit, is described. The AEM is designed for launch on the scout launch vehicle. Onboard equipment provides capability to despin, acquire the earth, and control the vehicle in an earth pointing mode using reaction wheels for torque with magnets for all attitude acquisition, wheel desaturation, and nutation damping. Earth sensors in the wheels provide pitch and roll attitude. This system provides autonomous control capability to 1 degree in pitch and roll and 2 degrees in yaw. The attitude can be determined to .5 degrees in pitch and roll and 2 degrees in yaw.

Large diameter carbon-boron fiber

Investigations concerned with a development of large-diameter carbon fibers are considered, taking into account the employment of vapor deposition techniques. In the experiments a carbon monofilament substrate is used together with reacting gases which consist of combinations of hydrogen, methane, and boron trichloride. It is found that the described approach can be used to obtain a large-diameter carbon filament containing boron. The filament has reasonable strength and modulus properties.

Depth-diameter relation for large Martian craters determined from Mariner 9 UVS altimetry

The depth/diameter ratio for 87 craters on Mars is determined using Mariner 9 ultraviolet-spectrometer (UVS) altimetry. The sample includes craters 12 to 100 km in diameter and 0.4 to 3.3 km in depth. The largest depth/diameter ratios on Mars are comparable to those of fresh craters on Mercury. However, more than half of the present sample consists of degraded craters whose depths are significantly shallower than those of fresh craters of similar diameter on Mercury, confirming the interpretations of earlier photoanalysts.

Effect of fiber diameter and matrix alloys on impact-resistant boron/aluminum composites

Efforts to improve the impact resistance of B/Al are reviewed and analyzed. Nonstandard thin-sheet charpy and Izod impact tests and standard full-size Charpy impact tests were conducted on composites containing unidirectional 0.10mm, 0.14mm, and 0.20mm diameter boron fibers in 1100, 2024, 5052, and 6061 Al matrices. Impact failure modes of B/Al are proposed in an attempt to describe the mechanisms involved and to provide insight for maximizing impact resistance. The impact strength of B/Al was significantly increased by proper selection of materials and processing. The use of a ductile matrix and large diameter boron fibers gave the highest impact strengths. This combination resulted in improved energy absorption through matrix shear deformation and multiple fiber breakage.

Scanning radiometer for measurement of forward-scattered light to determine mean diameter of spray particles

A scanning radiometer is reported that measures forward-scattered light to determine the mean diameter of spray particles. An optical scanning method gives a continuous measurement of the light-scattering angle during spray nozzle tests. A method of calibration and a correction for background light are presented. Mean particle diameters of 10 to 500 micrometers can be measured.

Acoustic performance of two 1.83-meter-diameter fans designed for a wind-tunnel drive system

A parametric study was made of the noise generated by two 1.83-m (6-ft) diameter fans operating up to a maximum pressure ratio of 1.03. One fan had 15 rotor blades, 23 stator blades, and a maximum rotational speed of 1200 rpm. The other fan had 9 rotor blades, 13 stator blades, and a maximum speed of 2,000 rpm. The fans were approximately 1/7-scale models of the 12.2-m (40-ft) diameter fans proposed for repowering the NASA-Ames 40- by 80 foot wind tunnel. The fans were operated individually in a 23.8-m (78-ft) long duct. Sound pressure levels in the duct were used to determine radiated acoustic power as fan speed, blade angle, and mass flow were varied. Results show that the low speed fan was slightly quieter than the high speed fan and, when scaled to full scale, would be 16 db quieter than the present wind tunnel fans. The fan noise varied directly with thrust regardless of whether thrust was varied by rotational speed or blade setting for the ranges studied.
