Harnessing the Risk-Related Data Supply Chain: An Information Architecture Approach to Enriching Human System Research and Operations Knowledge

An Information Architecture facilitates the understanding and, hence, harnessing of the human system risk-related data supply chain which enhances the ability to securely collect, integrate, and share data assets that improve human system research and operations. By mapping the risk-related data flow from raw data to useable information and knowledge (think of it as a data supply chain), the Human Research Program (HRP) and Space Life Science Directorate (SLSD) are building an information architecture plan to leverage their existing, and often shared, IT infrastructure.

Preparation and Testing of Ice-Enriched Lunar Regolith Simulant for RESOLVE OVEN

The RESOLVE (Regolith and Environment Science and Oxygen and Lunar Volatile Extraction) project seeks to deploy a robotic ISRU lander at the lunar south pole to determine the accessibility of frozen ice and the resource potential at various locations. The OVEN (Oxygen and Volatiles Extraction Node) component will be used to heat samples to 150 C or higher in order to drive off ice and other volatiles, which will then be identified and measured. An ice volatilization system has been developed to specifically collect data on the extraction of water vapor from a sample. Testing of the system was begun in April of this year. This report addresses our current work to test the system in a relevant environment in this case, using simulants with up to 10wt% water ice at 76K, in reduced atmosphere.

Methanol Droplet Extinction in Carbon-Dioxide-Enriched Environments in Microgravity

Diffusive extinction of methanol droplets with initial diameters between 1.25 mm and 1.72 mm, burning in a quiescent microgravity environment at one atmosphere pressure, was obtained experimentally for varying levels of ambient carbon-dioxide concentrations with a fixed oxygen concentration of 21% and a balance of nitrogen. These experiments serve as precursors to those which are beginning to be performed on the International Space Station and are motivated by the need to understand the effectiveness of carbon-dioxide as a fire suppressant in low-gravity environments. In these experiments, the flame standoff distance, droplet diameter, and flame radiation are measured as functions of time. The results show that the droplet extinction diameter depends on both the initial droplet diameter and the ambient concentration of carbon dioxide. Increasing the initial droplet diameter leads to an increased extinction diameter, while increasing the carbon-dioxide concentration leads to a slight decrease in the extinction diameter. These results are interpreted using a critical Damk hler number for extinction as predicted by an earlier theory, which is extended here to be applicable in the presence of effects of heat conduction along the droplet support fibers and of the volume occupied by the support beads

Enrichment of Non-Terrestrial L-Proteinogenic Amino Acids by Aqueous Alteration on the Tagish Lake Meteorite Parent Body

The distribution and isotopic and enantiomeric compositions of amino acids found in three distinct fragments of the Tagish Lake C2-type carbonaceous chondrite were investigated via liquid chromatography fluorescence detection time-of-flight mass spectrometry and gas chromatography isotope ratio mass spectrometry. Large L-enantiomeric excesses (L(sub ee) approx. 43 to 59%) of the a-hydrogen aspartic and glutamic amino acids were measured in Tagish Lake, whereas alanine, another alpha-hydrogen protein amino acid, was found to be nearly racemic (D approx. L) using both techniques. Carbon isotope measurements of D- and L-aspartic acid and D- and L-alanine in Tagish Lake fall well outside of the terrestrial range and indicate that the measured aspartic acid enantioenrichment is indigenous to the meteorite. Alternate explanations for the Lexcesses of aspartic acid such as interference from other compounds present in the sample, analytical biases, or terrestrial amino acid contamination were investigated and rejected. These results can be explained by differences in the solid-solution phase behavior of aspartic acid, which can form conglomerate enantiopure solids during crystallization, and alanine, which can only form racemic crystals.

APXS of First Rocks Encountered by Curiosity in Gale Crater: Geochemical Diversity and Volatile Element (K and ZN) Enrichment

The Alpha Particle X-ray spectrometer (APXS) on the Curiosity rover in Gale Crater [1] is the 4th such instrument to have landed on Mars [2]. Along the rover's traverse down-section toward Glenelg (through sol 102), the APXS has examined four rocks and one soil [3]. Gale rocks are geochemically diverse and expand the range of Martian rock compositions to include high volatile and alkali contents (up to 3.0 wt% K2O) with high Fe and Mn (up to 29.2% FeO*).

Low-Enriched Uranium Nuclear Thermal Propulsion Systems

The fundamental capability of Nuclear Thermal Propulsion (NTP) is game changing for space exploration. For example, using NTP for human Mars missions can provide faster transit and/or round trip times for crew; larger mission payloads; off nominal mission opportunities (including wider injection windows); and crew mission abort options not available from other architectures. The use of NTP can also reduce required earth-to-orbit launches, reducing cost and improving ground logistics. In addition to enabling robust human Mars mission architectures, NTP can be used on exploration missions throughout the solar system. A first generation NTP system could provide high thrust at a specific impulse above 900 s, roughly double that of state of the art chemical engines. Characteristics of fission and NTP indicate that useful first generation systems will provide a foundation for future systems with extremely high performance. Progress made under the NTP project could also help enable high performance fission power systems and Nuclear Electric Propulsion (NEP). Guidance, navigation, and control of NTP may have some unique but manageable characteristics.

Lightning Enriched Global Precipitation Feature Database

The Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission (TRMM) has provided a wealth of insight about lightning and precipitation in the tropics. However TRMM did not provide coverage outside the tropics and sub-tropics (i.e., beyond ±38°latitude), and hence it was unable to sample the lightning activity and precipitation features over a large fraction of mid-latitude continents and oceans, including extratropical cyclone storm tracks. The Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission picks up where TRMM left off in that it provides information on precipitation features in the mid-and high latitudes (up to 65°N/S). However, GPM lacks a lightning instrument that can provide additional insights into mid-latitude thunderstorm activity and distribution. Hence we integrate observations from coincident the ISS Lightning Imaging Sensor (LIS) and the World Wide Lightning Location Network (WWLLN) observations with measurements from the GPM constellation of satellites, in particular to extend the existing GPM Precipitation Feature (PF) database so its data parameters are similar to that of the TRMM PF database (i.e., precipitation + lighting). Currently, WWLLN and ISS-LIS lightning have been collocated into precipitation features defined from GPM core satellite and constellation satellites observations.

Environmental Enrichment in the ISS Rodent Habitat Hardware System

Responses of animals exposed to microgravity during in-space experiments were observed via available video recording stored in the NASA Ames Life Sciences Data Archive. These documented observations of animal behavior, as well as the range and level of activities during spaceflight, demonstrate that weightlessness conditions and the extreme novelty of the surroundings may exert damaging psychological stresses on the inhabitants. In response to a recognized need for in-flight animals to improve their wellbeing we propose to reduce such stresses by shaping and interrelating structures and surroundings to satisfying vital physiological needs of inhabitants. A Rodent Habitat Hardware System (RHHS) based housing facility incorporating a tubing network system, to maintain and monitor rodent health environment with advanced accessories has been proposed. Placing mice in a tubing-configured environment creates more natural space-restricted nesting environment for rodents, thereby facilitating a more comfortable transition to living in microgravity. A sectional tubing structure of the RHHS environment will be more beneficial under microgravity conditions than the provision of a larger space area that is currently utilized. The new tubing configuration was found suitable for further incorporation of innovative monitoring technology and accessories in the animal holding habitat unit which allow to monitor in real-time monitoring of valuable health related biological parameters under weightlessness environment of spaceflight.

Lunar Soil Enrichment for Plant Production: WILD (Waste Improved Lunar Dirt)

To identify a process to generate a fertile soil for plant growth using lunar regolith and waste compost, several qualitative and quantitative investigations were performed. The primary focus of this project was to demonstrate the feasibility of microbe bioleaching to extract inorganic plant nutrients (P and K) from lunar regolith simulant. This was achieved by developing a screening test method to identify microbial candidates that would effectively bioleach P and K from JSC-1A. Quantitative bioleaching test using the downselected microbes (Pantoea Agglomerans (P. agglo) and a plant-relevant consortium) were then performed. The second focus of the project was to validate the approach of waste compost utilization to improve water retention and fertility of lunar regolith for food production. This was achieved by measuring the water retention property of the mixture of compost and regolith at different ratio and conducting microgreen growth experiments with compost/regolith mixtures. The team also discovered from this study that some native microbes associated with JSC-1A can form biofilm containing JSC-1A particles (a type of soil crust), which showed potential as an ISRU geomicrobiological dust mitigation method for Lunar or Martian applications.

A New Test Methodology for Evaluating Fire Risk Due to Electrical Faults in Oxygen-Enriched Environments

This paper discusses a new test methodology for assessing the safe use of materials found in spacecraft that may be exposed to electrical faults, as performed at the NASA White Sands Test Facility. “Wire-break” testing, modeled after the Cleveland Open Cup method, identifies the conditions under which pyrolyzed material transitions from a brief flash to a propagating flame. The approach focuses on fuel mass liberated through pyrolysis, mixed with oxygen, and ignited by a piloted ignition (spark due to fusion of wire) to achieve flame propagation with the least energy. The test approach attempts to find energy density thresholds derived using I²t values from current-induced heating of various test materials and wire characteristics. The application of the data provides a useful approach to mitigating fire risks in space systems by correlating threshold data to real-world designs and scaling factors, including oxygen pressure, wire diameter, heat sinking, and contained smoke volume. Several case studies, including Apollo missions and hypothetical scenarios, illustrate practical applications of these thresholds to enhance fire safety design considerations in space environments.
