Streamer self-focusing in an external longitudinal magnetic field

The numerical simulation of the development of a streamer discharge in a gap with an external longitudinal magnetic field was used to demonstrate the self-focusing of such discharges. Self-focusing is caused by a sharp deceleration of the radial ionization wave due to a change in the electron energy distribution function, a decrease in the average electron energy, the rate of gas ionization, and the electron mobility in crossed electric and magnetic fields as compared to the case of the discharge development without a magnetic field. The self-focusing effect of a streamer discharge in an external longitudinal magnetic field is observed for both positive and negative pulse polarities. The work proposes an estimate of the critical value of the magnetic field, which makes it possible to control the development of pulsed high-voltage discharges at various gas pressures.

Timely Reporting of Heavy Hitters Using External Memory

Given an input stream S of size N, a Φ-heavy hitter is an item that occurs at least ΦN times in S. The problem of finding heavy-hitters is extensively studied in the database literature. In this work, we study a real-time heavy-hitters variant in which an element must be reported shortly after we see its T = Φ N-th occurrence (and hence it becomes a heavy hitter). We call this the Timely Event Detection (TED) Problem. The TED problem models the needs of many real-world monitoring systems, which demand accurate (i.e., no false negatives) and timely reporting of all events from large, high-speed streams with a low reporting threshold (high sensitivity). Like the classic heavy-hitters problem, solving the TED problem without false-positives requires large space (Ω (N) words). Thus in-RAM heavy-hitters algorithms typically sacrifice accuracy (i.e., allow false positives), sensitivity, or timeliness (i.e., use multiple passes). We show how to adapt heavy-hitters algorithms to external memory to solve the TED problem on large high-speed streams while guaranteeing accuracy, sensitivity, and timeliness. Our data structures are limited only by I/O-bandwidth (not latency) and support a tunable tradeoff between reporting delay and I/O overhead. With a small bounded reporting delay, our algorithms incur only a logarithmic I/O overhead. We implement and validate our data structures empirically using the Firehose streaming benchmark. Multi-threaded versions of our structures can scale to process 11M observations per second before becoming CPU bound. In comparison, a naive adaptation of the standard heavy-hitters algorithm to external memory would be limited by the storage device’s random I/O throughput, i.e., ≈100K observations per second.

Maximizing the external radiative efficiency of hybrid perovskite solar cells

Despite rapid advancements in power conversion efficiency in the last decade, perovskite solar cells still perform below their thermodynamic efficiency limits. Non-radiative recombination, in particular, has limited the external radiative efficiency and open circuit voltage in the highest performing devices. We review the historical progress in enhancing perovskite external radiative efficiency and determine key strategies for reaching high optoelectronic quality. Specifically, we focus on non-radiative recombination within the perovskite layer and highlight novel approaches to reduce energy losses at interfaces and through parasitic absorption. By strategically targeting defects, it is likely that the next set of record-performing devices with ultra-low voltage losses will be achieved.

Updated External Exposure Dose Coefficients

In 2018, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) updated and expanded the Federal Guidance Report (FGR) No. 12 to No. 15; tabulating age-specific external exposure effective dose rate coefficients for 1,252 radionuclides in the air, water, and soil (EPA 2018). However, the EPA discovered errors in the tables of dose coefficients for soil which led to the report being retracted for correction. This led to the adoption of “a uniform method of data-smoothing and extrapolation of monoenergetic organ doses at low energies across all exposure pathways; the originally-published dose coefficients utilized different methods for each media type” (EPA 2019). This resulted in all the external exposure dose coefficients being updated and FGR 15 being republished in August 2019 with corrected tables.

External Release of Organic Scintillator DRiFT Software - Technology Evaluation and Demonstration Project Accomplishments [Slides]

Overview and Objectives: DRiFT post processes radiation transport output from MCNP, and generates realistic nuclear instrumentation response; Organic scintillator response has been developed, tested, and validated with measurements, these instruments are widely used in nuclear safeguards. At the beginning of this project, DRiFT was only available to LANL employees with access to yellow High Performance Computing clusters. Additionally, there are many complicated external software dependencies. Our TED project request proposed using funds to: Comment and clean up code, friendly testing, generating test suites and examples; Expansion of scintillator types natively supported by DRiFT; External release of DRiFT accompanied by documentation. We accomplished all objectives (and many others), they are highlighted in these slides.

Regulatory Treatment of Low Frequency External Events under a Risk-Informed Performance-Based Licensing Pathway

Significant efforts are underway to develop and implement a risk-informed performance-based licensing framework for advanced reactors built on the establishment of an affirmative safety case. Such approaches offer the benefits of increased flexibility regarding key design and licensing decisions based on a detailed assessment and understanding of plant risk. These methods include the comprehensive analysis of scenarios that have historically been addressed through conservative and deterministic licensing analysis approaches, such as the evaluation of event sequences at frequencies of occurrence beyond the design basis. While the detailed analysis of low frequency events provides insights that can help justify alternative treatments to past conservatism, the findings are dependent on the quality and confidence associated with the analyses. The assessment of external hazards presents a unique challenge, as their potential frequency of occurrence, especially of large magnitude events, is inherently uncertain given the long return periods in question. The current project seeks to further explore the regulatory treatment of low frequency external events as part of a risk-informed performance-based framework. The goals are to identify the benefits and challenges of such approaches for advanced reactor vendors and to aid in the development of consistent and appropriate methodologies. As part of this effort, the current report summarizes initial project findings, with a focus on the evaluation of the seismic hazard. This includes an exploration of the implementation of a risk-informed performance-based approach through an example analysis. Based on the identified challenges associated with the probabilistic treatment of low frequency event sequences, additional performance-based methods were explored as complementary tools for demonstrating regulatory compliance. The report highlights key challenges and opportunities associated with the methods and outlines recommendations and future activities to assist with their implementation.
