Storage and feeding of coal

Reliable feeding of coal from storage bins to process requires the knowledge of the behavior of coal during flow. The study of the flow of bulk solids was undertaken in the 1950's and led to the development of flow ability testing equipment and of the Mass Flow concept of design for reliable flow. The theory has since been expanded to two-phase, solids-gas system, and has found world wide application in the design of storage and feeding systems.

Synthesis of a laterally displaced cluster feed for a reflector antenna with application to multiple beams and contoured patterns

Two methods are described for efficiently synthesizing the excitation coefficients of a laterally displaced cluster feed in a reflector antenna subject to beam distortion. Applications are presented for rotationally symmetric paraboloids excited by an equilateral triangular array of feed elements. The basic cluster is a central element surrounded by a hexagonal ring. The first method - termed the sequential current method - determines a set of excitation coefficients which minimizes the phase distortion in the 'effective' aperture distribution of the reflector. The second method - termed the gradient optimization method - is such that the distortion in the secondary power pattern is directly minimized in a min-L2 form by a gradient optimization algorithm regarded as a systematic computer iteration procedure. Application to the synthesis of contour patterns is included.

New X-band antenna feeds for the DSN 64-meter stations

New X-band antenna feed assemblies with dual-polarization capability are being implemented in the DSN 64-meter stations. Together with dual X-band traveling wave masers, they permit the simultaneous reception of right- and left-hand circular polarization from the Voyager spacecraft. The new feed also includes a dual hybrid mode feedhorn which increases the antenna gain by 0.36 dB over the present feedhorn.

Development of a static feed water electrolysis system

A one person level oxygen generation subsystem was developed and production of the one person oxygen metabolic requirements, 0.82 kg, per day was demonstrated without the need for condenser/separators or electrolyte pumps. During 650 hours of shakedown, design verification, and endurance testing, cell voltages averaged 1.62 V at 206 mA/sq cm and at average operating temperature as low as 326 K, virtually corresponding to the state of the art performance previously established for single cells. This high efficiency and low waste heat generation prevented maintenance of the 339 K design temperature without supplemental heating. Improved water electrolysis cell frames were designed, new injection molds were fabricated, and a series of frames was molded. A modified three fluid pressure controller was developed and a static feed water electrolysis that requires no electrolyte in the static feed compartment was developed and successfully evaluated.

Realizable feed-element patterns for multibeam reflector antenna analysis

The radiation pattern of a feed element is approximately described by a simple function (cos theta) to the q power. For a given element spacing of the feed array, simple formulas for estimating the practical value of q when the element is an open-ended rectangular waveguide, an open-ended circular waveguide, a pyramidal horn, or a cigar antenna are given.

Active stabilization of a flexible antenna feed tower

Active stabilization logic is synthesized to hold a feed at the focus of a spacecraft antenna dish. The feed support structure is modeled as a tetrahedron made up of flexible bars and connected to the dish by six short legs containing force actuators. Using the symmetry of the structure, the model can be decomposed into four uncoupled subsystems: pitch/forward motions with four degrees of freedom (DOF) and two controls; roll/lateral motions with four DOF and two controls; vertical motions with three DOF and one control; and yaw motion with one DOF and one control. This greatly simplifies the synthesis of control logic.

Static Feed Water Electrolysis Subsystem Testing and Component Development

A program was carried out to develop and test advanced electrochemical cells/modules and critical electromechanical components for a static feed (alkaline electrolyte) water electrolysis oxygen generation subsystem. The accomplishments were refurbishment of a previously developed subsystem and successful demonstration for a total of 2980 hours of normal operation; achievement of sustained one-person level oxygen generation performance with state-of-the-art cell voltages averaging 1.61 V at 191 ASF for an operating temperature of 128F (equivalent to 1.51V when normalized to 180F); endurance testing and demonstration of reliable performance of the three-fluid pressure controller for 8650 hours; design and development of a fluid control assembly for this subsystem and demonstration of its performance; development and demonstration at the single cell and module levels of a unitized core composite cell that provides expanded differential pressure tolerance capability; fabrication and evaluation of a feed water electrolyte elimination five-cell module; and successful demonstration of an electrolysis module pressurization technique that can be used in place of nitrogen gas during the standby mode of operation to maintain system pressure and differential pressures.

Development of a 611 MHz feed for a 9-meter reflector

A 2 by 2 array of fan dipoles was designed as a feed for an existing 9.14 meter diameter reflector. Baffles (conducting fences) were utilized to reduce mutual coupling between dipoles and to improve the feed radiation pattern in the H plane. Significant strut scattering effects are noted in the secondary patterns of the reflector antenna.

Optical techniques to feed and control GaAs MMIC modules for phased array antenna applications

A complex signal distribution system is required to feed and control GaAs monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMICs) for phased array antenna applications above 20 GHz. Each MMIC module will require one or more RF lines, one or more bias voltage lines, and digital lines to provide a minimum of 10 bits of combined phase and gain control information. In a closely spaced array, the routing of these multiple lines presents difficult topology problems as well as a high probability of signal interference. To overcome GaAs MMIC phased array signal distribution problems optical fibers interconnected to monolithically integrated optical components with GaAs MMIC array elements are proposed as a solution. System architecture considerations using optical fibers are described. The analog and digital optical links to respectively feed and control MMIC elements are analyzed. It is concluded that a fiber optic network will reduce weight and complexity, and increase reliability and performance, but higher power will be required.

New antenna feed revitalizes Space Shuttle tracker at NASA Edwards

An account is given of the upgrading of a 12-ft-diameter single-channel monopulse tracking system, which had been relegated to slaved backup status at NASA Edwards, to support research flights for Ames Dryden Research Center and for tracking orbital passes of the Space Shuttle and Shuttle landings both at Edwards and at White Sands. The improved system is now a stand-alone telemetry tracking system. A new conical scanning feed (known as Radscan) replaces the single channel monopulse feed in the upgraded system. Where previously the system would not autotrack at elevation angles below 5 degrees, it now automatically acquires the Space Shuttle when it appears on the horizon and autotracks from approximately 2 degrees in elevation to touchdown, and does so virtually unattended.

A microstrip array feed for MSAT spacecraft reflector antenna

An L-band circularly polarized microstrip array antenna with relatively wide bandwidth has been developed. The array has seven subarrays which form a single cluster as part of a large overlapping cluster reflector feed array. Each of the seven subarrays consists of four uniquely arranged linearly polarized microstrip elements. A 7.5 percent impedance (VSWR less than 1.5) as well as axial ratio (less than 1 dB) bandwidths have been achieved by employing a relatively thick honeycomb substrate with special impedance matching feed probes.

Active feed array compensation for reflector antenna surface distortions

The feasibility of electromagnetic compensation for reflector antenna surface distortions is investigated. The performance characteristics of large satellite communication reflector antenna systems degrade as the reflector surface distorts, mainly due to thermal effects from solar radiation. The technique developed can be used to maintain the antenna boresight directivity and sidelobe level independent of thermal effects on the reflector surface. With the advent of monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMIC), a greater flexibility in array fed reflector antenna systems can be achieved. MMIC arrays provide independent control of amplitude and phase for each of the many radiating elements in the feed array. By assuming a known surface distortion profile, a simulation study is carried out to examine the antenna performance as a function of feed array size and number of elements. Results indicate that the compensation technique can effectively control boresight directivity and sidelobe level under peak surface distortion in the order of tenth of a wavelength.

Adaptive feed array compensation system for reflector antenna surface distortion

The feasibility of a closed loop adaptive feed array system for compensating reflector surface deformations has been investigated. The performance characteristics (gain, sidelobe level, pointing, etc.) of large communication antenna systems degrade as the reflector surface distorts mainly due to thermal effects from a varying solar flux. The compensating systems described in this report can be used to maintain the design performance characteristics independent of thermal effects on the reflector surface. The proposed compensating system employs the concept of conjugate field matching to adjust the feed array complex excitation coefficients.

Microwave time delays for the X/S-band feed system at X-band

The X-band time delays for the X/S feed system of the 34-meter high efficiency antenna are required to refine current X-band downlink (8450 plus or minus 50 MHz) calibrations and prepare for the Magellan uplink (7190 plus or minus 45 MHz). The time delays of elements in the X-band feed system are obtained mostly via computer calculation and partly via measurement. The methods used and results obtained are presented. There is good agreement with theory.
