SuperLab 2.0 Showcase: Connecting Five Labs to Tackle Grid Complexity and Unlock Unique Grid Asset Potential

SuperLab 2.0 (a five-lab demonstration) is a collaborative, national-scale experiment showcasing the coordination of geographically distributed energy assets in real time. The demonstration integrates 25 physical and digital assets, spanning wind, photovoltaics, batteries, electrolyzers, DC fast chargers, microgrid controllers, building automation systems, small modular reactors, control centers, and gas turbines, across five U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) national laboratories: National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR), Idaho National Laboratory, National Energy Technology Laboratory, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and Sandia National Laboratories. These assets are unified using Energy Sciences Network (ESnet), a low-latency, high-performance DOE network, and are controlled via a centralized energy controller hosted at NLR's Advanced Research on Integrated Energy Systems facility. The demonstration validates the ability to stress-test hybrid energy systems under dynamic scenarios to de-risk advanced control strategies for greater resilience and flexibility.

EMT-TS Hybrid Simulation for Large Power Grids Considering IBR-Driven Dynamics

The escalating integration of inverter-based resources (IBRs) poses new challenges to power systems by introducing fast dynamics with higher frequencies, which may need to be simulated by an electromagnetic transient (EMT) program. As an alternative to conducting EMT simulations for the entire system, which is typically time consuming, hybrid simulation between EMT and phasor-domain transient stability (TS) can greatly reduce the computational burden while preserving the detailed fast dynamics in the EMT zone. This paper establishes an EMT-TS hybrid simulation platform using open-source tools, specifically ParaEMT, GridPACK, and HELICS, which are the EMT simulator, TS simulator, and interface framework, respectively. Case studies on the 240-bus Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC) system demonstrate that the developed ParaEMT-HELICS-GridPACK hybrid simulator can accurately capture both slow electromechanical and fast IBR-driven dynamics with a 2.4x speedup.

Regulatory Protection and Control Standards Applicable to The Vietnam Grid Under High Inverter-Based Resource (IBR) Penetration: A Review of Standards Applicable for Vietnam Grid

This report provides a review of the current standards and practices followed by regulatory authorities for interconnection of inverter-based resources (IBR). With the increased penetration of IBRs into the transmission and distribution networks, the legacy protection methodologies are getting challenged. Due to the lack of regulations on IBR operations under a fault it is essential to have a thorough understanding of the present-day interconnection standards to ensure proper IBR operations. A focus is placed on the regulation and standards enforced by the North American Reliability Corporation (NERC), Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineer (IEEE), Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and other regulations proposed by the responsible commissions.
