Exploring Electrosynthesis: Bulk Electrolysis and Cyclic Voltammetry Analysis of the Shono Oxidation

As electrochemistry continues to gain broader acceptance and use within the organic chemistry community, it is important that advanced undergraduate students are exposed to fundamental and practical knowledge of electrochemical applications for chemical synthesis. Herein, we describe the development of an undergraduate laboratory experience that introduces synthetic and analytical electrochemistry concepts to an advanced organic chemistry class. Experiments focus on the electrooxidative α-functionalization of carbamates, more generally known as the Shono oxidation, and include cyclic voltammetry analysis of two cyclic carbamates and a constant current bulk electrolysis reaction. Here, the exercise offers students an authentic experience in organic electrochemistry, lays a practical and theoretical foundation for future engagement with concepts in electrochemistry and redox chemistry, and strengthens fundamental organic chemistry skills.

A Polymer Degradation and Remanufacturing Experiment in the High School Classroom

Most students enter college without any exposure to polymer science, which leads to the poor understanding and slow implementation of plastic recycling programs in the United States. Here, to address the knowledge gap in chemical recycling, we introduce a 2-part laboratory experiment that was conducted in multiple high schools and public outreach events to demonstrate the depolymerization of PET via aminolysis and the remanufacturing of cleaved PET fragments into a new aramid polymer. Student experiences were evaluated with two postlab assignments.

Teaching Nonradiative Transitions with MATLAB and Python

Nonradiative transitions are changes in energy states of atoms, ions, or molecules that do not involve the emission or absorption of photons. Despite their importance in understanding luminescent properties and photochemical reaction mechanisms, nonradiative transitions are rarely given more than a qualitative overview in undergraduate and even graduate physical chemistry curricula. To supplement the coverage of nonradiative transition topics, we provide here a set of active learning exercises to help students develop an intuitive understanding of the factors that determine the rate of nonradiative transitions. Here, we start by outlining the theoretical background through the formulations of the Franck–Condon factor and its relation to the rate of nonradiative transition. We then introduce three teaching modules, with associated MATLAB and Python codes, to explore how (1) the excited state nuclear displacement, (2) the electronic energy gap between excited and ground state and (3) the excited/ground state vibrational mode frequencies affect the magnitude of the Franck–Condon factor and thereby the rate of nonradiative transitions. The wave function overlap plots that accompany all teaching modules provide direct visualization of the effect of input parameters on the magnitude of Franck–Condon overlap integral.

Integrated Hydrogen Energy System Testing/Validation: Cooperative Research and Development Final Report, CRADA Number CRD-21-18272

Through the ARIES platform, this proposed project aims to bridge a gap and utilize the power hardware-in-the-loop (PHIL) and controller hardware-in-the-loop (CHIL) experiments and create open-source interconnection and interoperability information that can aid in faster and cheaper installation and operation of grid forming fuel cell inverters.
