Open Science Practices at the Community Coordinated Modeling Center

Open Science is defined as “the principle and practice of making research products and processes available to all, while respecting diverse cultures, maintaining security and privacy, and fostering collaborations, reproducibility, and equity” by Federal Agencies. The CCMC has been practicing open science based on FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable) principle by providing access to the state-of -the art space science and space weather models to users around the world through various simulation services such as Runs-on-Request, Instant Runs, Real time runs on iSWA system. The CCMC also provides a wide range of tools and framework to help users easily utilize modeled data. One of the tools is the official NASA open-sourced software called Kamodo. Kamodo allows users to work with complex space weather models and data with little or no coding experience. Additionally, to support transparent model validation efforts, the CCMC is providing an integrated and flexible framework called CAMEL. CAMEL allows users to seamlessly compare model outputs with observational data sets. Currently, we are working on a user-friendly database of the papers and research that used CCMC services, so that the future users will have open access to previously performed research by other users and its details. In this presentation, we will show the open tools and resources provided by the CCMC. Furthermore, we will share our new efforts to support open data and open science results.

The NASA Space Communications Data Networking Architecture

The NASA Space Communications Architecture Working Group (SCAWG) has recently been developing an integrated agency-wide space communications architecture in order to provide the necessary communication and navigation capabilities to support NASA's new Exploration and Science Programs. A critical element of the space communications architecture is the end-to-end Data Networking Architecture, which must provide a wide range of services required for missions ranging from planetary rovers to human spaceflight, and from sub-orbital space to deep space. Requirements for a higher degree of user autonomy and interoperability between a variety of elements must be accommodated within an architecture that necessarily features minimum operational complexity. The architecture must also be scalable and evolvable to meet mission needs for the next 25 years. This paper will describe the recommended NASA Data Networking Architecture, present some of the rationale for the recommendations, and will illustrate an application of the architecture to example NASA missions.

Telescience in the Space Station era

Telescience refers to the development of systems where participants involved in research in space can access their fellow scientists and the appropriate NASA services before flight, during flight, and after flight, preferably from their home institutions and through the same equipment. Telescience requires integration of available technologies to develop computer environments that maintain interoperability across different disciplines and different portions of the lifetimes of space experiments, called teledesign, teleoperations, and teleanalysis. Participants in the NASA Telescience Testbed Program are using a rigid prototyping approach to evaluate the necessary technologies and select the options and tradeoffs that best suit their accustomed modalities. The concept of transaction management is described, where the emphasis is placed on the effects of commands, whether event-generated onboard the spacecraft or sent up from the ground. Interoperability, security, and privacy issues are also discussed, and the Telescience Testbed Pilot Program is described.

Methods and apparatus for distributed resource discovery using examples

Distributed resource discovery is an essential step for information retrieval and/or providing information services. This step is usually used for determining the location of an information or data repository which has relevant information. The most fundamental challenge is the usual lack of semantic interoperability of the requested resource. In accordance with the invention, a method is disclosed where distributed repositories achieve semantic interoperability through the exchange of examples and, optionally, classifiers. The outcome of the inventive method can be used to determine whether common labels are referring to the same semantic meaning.

Joint Composable Object Model and LVC Methodology

Within the Department of Defense, multiple architectures are created to serve and fulfill one or several specific service or mission related LVC training goals. Multiple Object Models exist across and within those architectures and it is there that those disparate object models are a major source of interoperability problems when developing and constructing the training scenarios. The two most commonly used architectures are; HLA and TENA, with DIS and CTIA following close behind in terms of the number of users. Although these multiple architectures can share and exchange data the underlying meta-models for runtime data exchange are quite different, requiring gateways/translators to bridge between the different object model representations; while the Department of Defense's use of gateways are generally effective in performing these functions, as the LVC environment increases so too does the cost and complexity of these gateways. Coupled with the wide range of different object models across the various user communities we increase the propensity for run time errors, increased programmer stop gap measures during coordinated exercises, or failure of the system as a whole due to unknown or unforeseen incompatibilities. The Joint Composable Object Model (JCOM) project was established under an M&S Steering Committee (MSSC)-sponsored effort with oversight and control placed under the Joint Forces Command J7 Advanced Concepts Program Directorate. The purpose of this paper is to address the initial and the current progress that has been made in the following areas; the Conceptual Model Development Format, the Common Object Model, the Architecture Neutral Data Exchange Model (ANDEM), and the association methodology to allow the re-use of multiple architecture object models and the development of the prototype persistent reusable library.

STEReO brings together several technologies in Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Traffic Management (UTM), Autonomy, Communications, Human Factors, and Domain Expertise & Tools, aimed at providing scalability and flexibility, as well as operational resiliency to dynamic changes during a disaster event. Some of the concepts STEReO explores are: collaborative tools to ingest remote sensing information and distribute a common mission operating picture, apply ad-hoc communication networks to facilitate timely information sharing and communication of changes, vehicle-to-vehicle and onboard autonomy technologies ensure the safety and resiliency of operations, and apply NASA’s UAS traffic management system (UTM) as a public safety UAS Service Supplier (USS) to access and coordinate use of the airspace by both manned and unmanned operations. The potential benefits of STEReO include: standardized, cross-platform communication means increased interoperability and ease of cooperation/collaboration, increased situation awareness and common operating picture allow for earlier detection and decision making, and scalable to size and complexity of environment, operations, and mission objectives. This presentation gives an overview of the STEReO project and introduces a stakeholder workshop as a three-day activity to solicit input from the community of emergency response operators and related industry representatives.
