Injection Phase-Locked Laser-Diode Array

Phase-coherent emission with negligible far-field supermodes produced by proposed surface-emitting laser-diode array stimulated by holographically directed emission from single master diode. To achieve same coherence and output power, single laser diode requires high power density, which substantially reduces working lifetime. Proposed integrated optical array useful in communications

Frequency Stabilization of DFB Laser Diodes at 1572 nm for Spaceborne Lidar Measurements of CO2

We report a fiber-based, pulsed laser seeder system that rapidly switches among 6 wavelengths across atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) absorption line near 1572.3 nm for measurements of global CO2 mixing ratios to 1-ppmv precision. One master DFB laser diode has been frequency-locked to the CO2 line center using a frequency modulation technique, suppressing its peak-to-peak frequency drifts to 0.3 MHz at 0.8 sec averaging time over 72 hours. Four online DFB laser diodes have been offset-locked to the master laser using phase locked loops, with virtually the same sub-MHz absolute accuracy. The 6 lasers were externally modulated and then combined to produce the measurement pulse train.

Shock isolator for diode laser operation on a closed-cycle refrigerator

Closed-cycle helium refrigerators are widely used as coolers for semiconductor diode lasers. These refrigerators pose several difficulties including temperature oscillations due to varying refrigerator capacity during the Solvay cycle, and impact shocks delivered to the diode in the cycle's expansion phase. A shock isolator has been designed to isolate diode lasers from such impact shocks. Slow diode current scans have been made before installation of the shock isolator, with the isolator but no thermal damper, and with both devices. With the isolator and no damper, the diode output frequency oscillated at the refrigerator cycle rate, deviating by plus or minus 40 MHz. Using the isolator and the damper no frequency fluctuation was detected.

Programmable, secondary frequency standard based infrared synthesizer using tunable lead-salt diode lasers

Quantum phase noise limited Lorentzian power spectral densities were achieved with tunable lead-salt diode lasers. Linewidths as narrow as 22 kHz were observed. A truly programmable infrared synthesizer was produced by frequency-offset-locking the tunable diode lasers to the combination of a stable CO2 (or CO) reference laser and a programmable microwave frequency synthesizer. Absolute frequency accuracy and reproducibility of about + or - 30 kHz (0.000001 kaysers) relative to the primary Cs frequency standard may now be obtained with this technique.

Prospects and challenges of colloidal quantum dot laser diodes

Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) combine the superior light-emission characteristics of quantum-confined semiconductors with the chemical flexibility of molecular systems. We find that these properties could, in principle, enable solution-processable laser diodes with an ultrawide range of accessible colours. However, the realization of such devices has been hampered by fast optical gain decay due to non-radiative Auger recombination and poor stability of QD solids at the high current densities required for the lasing regime. Recently, these problems have been resolved, which resulted in the development of electrically pumped optical gain devices operating at ultrahigh current densities of around 1,000 A cm -2 . The next step is the realization of a QD laser diode (QLD). Here we assess the status of the QD lasing field, examine the remaining challenges on the path to a QLD and discuss practical strategies for attaining electrically pumped QD lasing.

Development of a diode laser heterodyne spectrometer and observations of silicon monoxide in sunspots

A state of the art, tunable diode laser infrared heterodyne spectrometer was designed and constructed for ground based observations throughout the 8 to 12 micron atmospheric window. The instrument was optimized for use with presently available tunable diode lasers, and was designed as a flexible field system for use with large reflecting telescopes. The instrument was aligned and calibrated using laboratory and astronomical sources. Observations of SiO fundamental (v = 1-0) and hot band (v = 2-1) absorption features were made in sunspots near 8 microns using the spectrometer. The data permit an unambiguous determination of the temperature pressure relation in the upper layers of the umbral atmosphere, and support the sunspot model suggested by Stellmacher and Wiehr.

Laser diode initiated detonators for space applications

Ensign Bickford Aerospace Company (EBAC) has over ten years of experience in the design and development of laser ordnance systems. Recent efforts have focused on the development of laser diode ordnance systems for space applications. Because the laser initiated detonators contain only insensitive secondary explosives, a high degree of system safety is achieved. Typical performance characteristics of a laser diode initiated detonator are described in this paper, including all-fire level, function time, and output. A finite difference model used at EBAC to predict detonator performance, is described and calculated results are compared to experimental data. Finally, the use of statistically designed experiments to evaluate performance of laser initiated detonators is discussed.

Measurements of (C-12)H4 nu-4 band halfwidths using a tunable diode laser system and a Fourier transform spectrometer

Air-broadened and N2-broadened halfwidths at room temperature for twenty-five transitions in the nu-4 fundamental band of (C-12)H4 have been determined from IR absorption spectra recorded with a tunable diode laser spectrometer. Two tunable diode lasers operating in the 1250-1380-kayser region were used to obtain these data. Air-broadened halfwidths for twenty of these lines were also determined from additional spectra recorded at 0.01-kayser resolution with the Fourier transform spectrometer in the McMath solar telescope complex on Kitt Peak. The air-broadened halfwidths obtained from these two techniques are very consistent with agreement better than 3 percent in most cases.

Red-light-emitting laser diodes operating CW at room temperature

Heterojunction laser diodes of AlGaAs have been prepared with threshold current densities substantially below those previously achieved at room temperature in the 7200-8000-A spectral range. These devices operate continuously with simple oxide-isolated stripe contacts to 7400 A, which extends CW operation into the visible (red) portion of the spectrum.

Rugged, Tunable Extended-Cavity Diode Laser

A rugged, tunable extended-cavity diode laser (ECDL) has been developed to satisfy stringent requirements for frequency stability, notably including low sensitivity to vibration. This laser is designed specifically for use in an atomic-clock experiment to be performed aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Lasers of similar design would be suitable for use in terrestrial laboratories engaged in atomic-clock and atomic-physics research.

Quasi-CW Laser Diode Bar Life Tests

NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center is developing technology for satellite-based, high peak power, LIDAR transmitters requiring 3-5 years of reliable operation. Semi-conductor laser diodes provide high efficiency pumping of solid state lasers with the promise of long-lived, reliable operation. 100-watt quasi- CW laser diode bars have been baselined for the next generation laser altimeters. Multi-billion shot lifetimes are required. The authors have monitored the performance of several diodes for billions of shots and investigated operational modes for improving diode lifetime.

Stratospheric composition measurements of earth and Titan using high-resolution tunable diode laser spectroscopy

Field and laboratory measurements of species of atmospheric interest made as part of the JPL diode laser spectroscopy program are presented. Stratospheric measurements of NO2, NO, CO2, and H2O made in November 1985 using the BLISS instrument are reported, together with recent laboratory measurements of spectral line parameters of HNO3 and HO2NO2. In addition, a novel diode laser instrument concept for the in situ sensing of Titan's atmosphere is described for the Saturn Orbiter/Titan Probe (SOTP) Cassini Mission.

The evaluation of a HgCdTe photomixer with a Tunable Diode Laser (TDL) and the evaluation of TDL's as a local oscillator in a heterodyne detection system

Heterodyne systems would be much more versatile if a broadly tunable laser, such as a semiconductor diode laser (TDL), could be used as the local oscillator (LO). Previous studies have shown that while a TDL can be used as an LO, the TDL lack sufficient power to cause the signal-to-noise ratio to be shot noise limited. The heterodyne system with a HgCdTe photodiode as the LO was characterized and the beat frequency response of the heterodyne systems was mapped out.

Laser-wavelength modulation and second-harmonic detection are employed to achieve the required constituent detection sensitivity. The airborne tunable laser absorption spectrometer was used in two polar ozone campaigns, the Airborne Antarctic Ozone Experiment and the Airborne Arctic Stratospheric Expedition, and measured nitrous oxide with a response time of 1 s and an accuracy not greater than 10 percent.
