Laboratory For Atmospheres 1996 Annual Report

A broad and vigorous science program in NASA is vital for the advancement of knowledge through space research.Scientists at NASA in collaboration with outside scientists play a key role in conceiving new space missions, providing mission requirements, and carrying out research oriented towards explaining the behavior of Earth's and other planetary systems. NASA scientists also supply outside scientists with technical assistance and scientific data. The Laboratory for Atmospheres serves as the focal point of a broad theoretical and experimental research program. The goal of the program is to study all aspects of the atmospheres of the Earth and other planets, including their structural, dynamical, radiative, and chemical properties. The Laboratory is one of four science laboratories of the at the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC). The Laboratory is located in Greenbelt, MD along with the and the. , located in New York, NY, is the fourth science Laboratory in the Directorate. The Directorate also includes the Global Change Data Center and the Space Data and Computing Division (SDCD). The GSFC is the lead center for science and management of the, which is one of the four NASA enterprises. Earth Sciences Directorate Laboratory for Terrestrial Physics Laboratory for Hydrospheric Processes The Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) Mission to Planet Earth (MTPE)This report is a general statement of the purpose and philosophy of the Laboratory and of its role within NASA. It also includes a broad description of the research areas; information on human resources, scientific interactions, and outreach activities with the outside community; and a selection of the major accomplishments achieved in the Laboratory in calendar year 1996.

Abrstract - OnePlace Redesign Spring 2020 Internship

The project I worked on was the OnePlace Redesign. In that, I converted the OnePlace home page to the Service Portal to match NASA OnePlace’s current application design standards, I was able to allow users to easily find applications in OnePlace and I was able to allow users to easily find and request OnePlace services (new app development, new knowledge base, etc.). It was a major accomplishment to be able to remodel a website that soon the entire Langley center that uses OnePlace will use. The website was made through ServiceNow’s Service Portal, and I organized the applications like never before, allowed a clear styling to applications a user does not have access to and/or are new applications, browsing of applications with clear button divisions, and allowing for different options depending if app is accessible or not, with proper error checking in place and very-well documented code. It was amazing to incorporate all this logic into one widget so that whoever wants to utilize this feature has no trouble at all to do so. The 3 most important things I learned were being able to do this work within ServiceNow, as it is such an important enterprise platform for CRM and boosting the connected workforce of NASA, incorporate built-in APIs from ServiceNow Glide Records to connect Server Scripts to Client Scripts and HTML, and be able to use agile to get another experience of managing work capacity with stories, and having proper communication with the team if every feature is done correctly and steps for continuing forward. The part that I enjoyed the most was the training I did for ServiceNow and I freedom I had to experiment to see how to structure the Service Portal. I was not tied down, and I believe this allowed for a better outcome of the product. As part of the internship, I created a very in-depth design document with the help of my team to document the project goals before it was started and technical documentation (including the design document) summarizing the final result of the product in terms of the new features added and the explanation of the logic thoroughly so that anyone can understand the project easily. The technical documentation will be published as a Knowledge Article within OnePlace Knowledge Base documentation.

Waste-to-Energy Technical Assistance for Local Governments

The goal of this project is to mobilize data, information, and knowledge generated about organic waste streams to local governments and support their decision-making. It builds on previous work related to wet organic waste resources (food waste, sludge, manure, waste fats and oils). The project provides an improved understanding of local waste challenges and priorities to inform BETO's R&D strategies and decision-making. It also supports local governments' goals and plans related to sustainable waste management, enables energy and/or resource recovery projects development at municipal level, and facilitates public-private partnerships. A key challenge is associated with more activities requested by entities than program allows which is mitigated by prioritization by requesting agency. All FY21 and FY22 TA requests have been completed. Major accomplishments include: 1). 34 requests managed in the past two years, 2) Distilled key challenges faced by communities. Key outcomes include strong community participation since inception of the program, dedicated program web site, deliverables tailored to communities' needs, and distribution materials (e.g., fact sheets, brochures) for a broader audience.

Joint Winter Runway Friction Program Accomplishments

The major program objectives are: (1) harmonize ground vehicle friction measurements to report consistent friction value or index for similar contaminated runway conditions, for example, compacted snow, and (2) establish reliable correlation between ground vehicle friction measurements and aircraft braking performance. Accomplishing these objectives would give airport operators better procedures for evaluating runway friction and maintaining acceptable operating conditions, providing pilots information to base go/no go decisions, and would contribute to reducing traction-related aircraft accidents.

Flight Dynamics Analysis Branch End of Fiscal Year 1999 Report

This document summarizes the major activities and accomplishments carried out by the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC)'s Flight Dynamics Analysis Branch (FDAB), Code 572, in support of flight projects and technology development initiatives in Fiscal Year (FY) 1999. The document is intended to serve as both an introduction to the type of support carried out by the FDAB (Flight Dynamics Analysis Branch), as well as a concise reference summarizing key analysis results and mission experience derived from the various mission support roles assumed over the past year. The major accomplishments in the FDAB in FY99 were: 1) Provided flight dynamics support to the Lunar Prospector and TRIANA missions among a variety of spacecraft missions; 2) Sponsored the Flight Mechanics Symposium; 3) Supported the Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) workshops; 4) Performed numerous analyses and studies for future missions; 5) Started the Flight Dynamics Analysis Branch Lab for in-house mission analysis and support; and 6) Complied with all requirements in support of GSFC IS09000 certification.

Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity End of Mission Report

The Mars Exploration Rover (MER) Opportunity landed on Meridiani Planum on 25 January 2004 for a prime mission designed to last three months (90 sols). After more than fourteen years operating on the surface of Mars, the last communication from Opportunity occurred on sol 5111 (10 June, 2018) when a major dust storm reduced power on the solar panels to the point where further communications were not possible. Following the cessation of the dust storm several weeks later, the MER project radiated over 1000 commands to Mars in an attempt to elicit a response from the rover. Attempts were made utilizing the Deep Space Network X-Band and UHF relay via both Mars Odyssey and the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. Search and recovery efforts concluded on 12 February, 2019. It is the MER project’s assessment that the environmental window in which it would be most probable to recover Opportunity had passed by that time and that the rover would succumb to the extreme environmental conditions experienced during a winter on Mars. This report summarizes the major science accomplishments throughout the fourteen years of this mission, with a detailed focused on recent science accomplishments during the last extended mission (EM-11). This report also describes the mission engineering accomplishments and specific actions taken during the attempt to recover the vehicle after communications were lost during the major dust storm.
