Fluoride-Cooled High-Temperature Pebble-Bed Reactor Reference Plant Model

In this report we present work performed in Fiscal Year 2022 that demonstrates the modeling and simulation of a fully coupled neutronics thermal hydraulics reference plant model for a fluoride-cooled high-temperature pebble-bed reactor. The multiphysics model is developed on the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s Comprehensive Reactor Analysis Bundle (BlueCRAB) available on the Idaho National Laboratory’s high-performance computer, which natively and seamlessly couples Griffin, Pronghorn, and the BISON Multiphysics Object-Oriented Simulation Environment based applications. Griffin provides reactor physics capabilities, including depletion to the equilibrium core, k-eigenvalue, adjoint, and transient. The unique direct equilibrium core capability in Griffin is based on a streamline methodology to spatially deplete the pebbles into burnup groups. Pronghorn solves the porous medium equations for the fluid regions and conduction in the solid regions and incorporates a fluidic diode model to simulate the transition from forced to natural convection during accident scenarios. MOOSE modules solves thermal conduction problems for the pebbles and tristructural isotropic in the pebble-bed core, thus providing the fuel and moderator spatial fields for each pebble burnup group. The neutronics feedback relies primarily on fuel, moderator, and reflector temperatures as as well as the FLiBe salt density. Here, we present results for the uncoupled equilibrium core and perform comparisons to equivalent Monte Carlo models. The power distributions and kinetic parameters obtained with Griffin are consistent with those computed with Griffin. We demonstrate a noticeable improvement with the use of discrete ordinates method (SN) transport. The coupled steady-state equilibrium core provides the initial condition for two time-dependent problems: a control rod withdrawal event and an unprotected loss of flow event. In both cases, the reactor design is self-stabilizing and the solutions are consistent with the expected physics. Although this model is prototypical regarding BlueCRAB’s capabilities, its results are consistent with published work by Kairos Power and other research entities. Significant improvements to the model are planned in future work.

Neutron transport methods for multiphysics heterogeneous reactor core simulation in Griffin

Griffin is a reactor physics application based on the Multiphysics Object-Oriented Simulation Environment (MOOSE). This work discloses the methods, algorithms, and implementation for simulating heterogeneous reactor dynamics models. Griffin utilizes a discontinuous finite-element method with discrete ordinates (DFEM-S ) to discretize the field variable of the multigroup neutron transport equation. Multiphysics feedback is handled using two-step tabulated cross-section methodology. Feedback quantities are evaluated using the MOOSE-MultiApp system to couple various engineering phenomena, such as heat conduction and thermal fluids. The multiphysics DFEM-S system is solved using fixed-point iteration with a fully asynchronous parallel sweeper, unstructured coarse-mesh finite difference acceleration, and a multi-timescale improved quasi-static method scheme. The implementation is applied to a multiphysics microreactor model, with two transients: one initiated by a single heat-pipe failure and another by control drum rotation. Importantly, these examples demonstrate the ability of Griffin to tractably solve the neutron transport equation considering seven independent variables and feedback.

BISON: A Finite Element-Based Nuclear Fuel Performance Code

BISON is a finite element-based nuclear fuel performance code applicable to a variety of fuel forms including light water reactor fuel rods, TRISO particle fuel, and metallic rod and plate fuel. It is a multiphysics fuel analysis tool that solves fully-coupled thermomechanical problems. BISON is based on MOOSE and can efficiently solve problems using standard workstations or very large high-performance computers in a variety of different dimensions, including full 3D, 2D-RZ axisymmetric, layered axisymmetric 1D, and spherically symmetric 1D systems. It is developed by a team of scientists and engineers at Idaho National Laboratory and by collaborators. The development of BISON is supported by various funding agencies, principally the United States Department of Energy.

PCMS: Parallel Coupler For Multimodel Simulations

This paper presents the Parallel Coupler for Multimodel Simulations (PCMS), a new GPU accelerated generalized coupling framework for coupling simulation codes on leadership class supercomputers. PCMS includes distributed control and field mapping methods for up to five dimensions. For field mapping PCMS can utilize discretization and field information to accommodate physics constraints. PCMS is demonstrated with a coupling of the gyrokinetic microturbulence code XGC with a Monte Carlo neutral transport code DEGAS2 and with a 5D distribution function coupling of an energetic particle transport code (GNET) to a gyrokinetic microturbulence code (GTC). Weak scaling is also demonstrated on up to 2,080 GPUs of Frontier with a weak scaling efficiency of 85%.

Implementation of Isotopic Removal Capability in Griffin for Multi-Region MSR Depletion Analysis

This work reports the first step in such an analysis, the verification of isotope removal capability for multi-region MSR depletion in Griffin. Verification studies are performed against SERPENT for chemical species removal from the core to an off-gas system for MSR analysis. A brief review of the Bateman equations including the isotopic removal term is provided along with a description of the example problem used in the verification studies performed in Griffin versus SERPENT. Next, the results of the verification study are presented for isotopic depletion, isotopic depletion with removal, and the specific analysis case of varying the solubility of Iodine in a salt system and how this can affect material buildup in the off-gas system. Lastly, the results are analyzed and future work detailing the fully coupled MSR depletion analysis that incorporates the true multiphysics of the system is discussed.

THM: the MOOSE thermal hydraulics module

The MOOSE Thermal Hydraulics Module (THM) is designed to facilitate the development of thermal hydraulic system models. It provides the capability to assemble networks of coupled components such as pipes, junctions, valves, turbomachinery, and heat exchangers. Its library of components supports a single-phase, compressible flow model based on a variable-area formulation of the Euler equations of gas dynamics and discretized using a finite volume scheme. THM offers a flexible system for specifying closures such as friction factors or heat transfer coefficients, allowing the user to choose from built-in correlations or define their own in the input file. A control logic system can be used to control input parameters, necessary for implementing transient scenarios and mirroring real control systems in thermal hydraulic systems. THM can be coupled with other MOOSE-based applications for multiphysics calculations. This talk will give an introduction to the capabilities of THM and provide some examples of its usage and validation.
