Discrete orthogonal function expansions for non-uniform grids using the fast Fourier transform

A technique for applying discrete Fourier series to infinite domains is presented. The technique uses mappings designed to minimize truncation error and can be applied to solve mixed initial boundary value problems among others. The method is alias-free and yields consistent differentiation and integration operators. The mapping-induced truncation error is explicitly expressible and small in nearly all cases of interest. The method is illustrated for three problems involving convection, diffusion, and vortex interaction.

An orthogonal decomposition of the axisymmetric jet mixing layer utilizing cross-wire velocity measurements

The structure of the mixing layer of the axisymmetric turbulent jet was investigated using cross-wire velocity measurements, which generated radial and streamwise cross-spectral data at eight radial positions and 25 azimuthal positions. The results show the existence of an azimuthal coherent ringlike structure dominated by axisymmetric mode near the potential core; however, from the center of the mixing layer out toward its low-speed side, the fourth, fifth, and sixth modes are dominating. A mechanism for the life cycle of coherent structures and for turbulence production in the axisymmetric jet mixing layer is proposed, which accounts for the observed phenomena and is amenable to dynamical analysis using the equations of motion.

Orthogonal Patterns In A Binary Neural Network

Report presents some recent developments in theory of binary neural networks. Subject matter relevant to associate (content-addressable) memories and to recognition of patterns - both of considerable importance in advancement of robotics and artificial intelligence. When probed by any pattern, network converges to one of stored patterns.

Orthogonal stack of global tide gauge sea level data

Yearly and monthly tide gauge sea level data from around the globe are fitted to numerically generated equilibrium tidal data to search for the 18.6 year lunar tide and 14 month pole tide. Both tides are clearly evident in the results, and their amplitudes and phases are found to be consistent with a global equilibrium response. Global, monthly sea level data from outside the Baltic sea and Gulf of Bothnia are fitted to global atmospheric pressure data to study the response of the ocean to pressure fluctuations. The response is found to be inverted barometer at periods greater than two months. Global averages of tide gauge data, after correcting for the effects of post glacial rebound on individual station records, reveal an increase in sea level over the last 80 years of between 1.1 mm/yr and 1.9 mm/yr.

Nonlinear aerodynamic modeling using multivariate orthogonal functions

The problem to be addressed in this work is that of modeling nondimensional force and moment aerodynamic coefficients over the entire subsonic envelope. The particular application discussed here is the Z force coefficient for the F-18 High Angle of Attack Research Vehicle (HARV).

Grid orthogonality effects on predicted turbine midspan heat transfer and performance

The effect of five different C type grid geometries on the predicted heat transfer and aerodynamic performance of a turbine stator is examined. Predictions were obtained using two flow analysis codes. One was a finite difference analysis, and the other was a finite volume analysis. Differences among the grids in terms of heat transfer and overall performance were small. The most significant difference among the five grids occurred in the prediction of pitchwise variation in total pressure. There was consistency between results obtained with each of the flow analysis codes when the same grid was used. A grid generating procedure in which the viscous grid is embedded within an inviscid type grid resulted in the best overall performance.

Orthogonal feeding techniques for tapered slot antennas

For array of "brick" configuration there are electrical and mechanical advantages to feed the antenna with a feed on a substrate perpendicular to the antenna substrate. Different techniques have been proposed for exciting patch antennas using such a feed structure.Rncently, an aperture-coupled dielectric resonator antenna using a perpendicular feed substrate has been demonstrated to have very good power coupling efficiency. For a two-dimensional rectangular array with tapered slot antenna elements, a power combining network on perpendicular substrate is generally required to couple power to or from the array. In this paper, we will describe two aperture-coupled techniques for coupling microwave power from a linearly tapered slot antenna (LTSA) to a microstrip feed on a perpendicular substrate. In addition, we will present measured results for return losses and radiation patterns.

An Optimal Orthogonal Decomposition Method for Kalman Filter-Based Turbofan Engine Thrust Estimation

A new linear point design technique is presented for the determination of tuning parameters that enable the optimal estimation of unmeasured engine outputs such as thrust. The engine s performance is affected by its level of degradation, generally described in terms of unmeasurable health parameters related to each major engine component. Accurate thrust reconstruction depends upon knowledge of these health parameters, but there are usually too few sensors to be able to estimate their values. In this new technique, a set of tuning parameters is determined which accounts for degradation by representing the overall effect of the larger set of health parameters as closely as possible in a least squares sense. The technique takes advantage of the properties of the singular value decomposition of a matrix to generate a tuning parameter vector of low enough dimension that it can be estimated by a Kalman filter. A concise design procedure to generate a tuning vector that specifically takes into account the variables of interest is presented. An example demonstrates the tuning parameters ability to facilitate matching of both measured and unmeasured engine outputs, as well as state variables. Additional properties of the formulation are shown to lend themselves well to diagnostics.

Whispering Gallery Mode Resonator with Orthogonally Reconfigurable Filter Function

An optical resonator has been developed with reconfigurable filter function that has resonant lines that can be shifted precisely and independently from each other, creating any desirable combination of resonant lines. This is achieved by changing the axial distribution of the effective refractive index of the resonator, which shifts the resonant frequency of particular optical modes, leaving all the rest unchanged. A reconfigurable optical filter is part of the remote chemical detector proposed for the Mars mission (Planetary Instrument Definition and Development Program PIDDP), but it is also useful for photonic communications devices.
