Fiber optics transmit clock signal more reliably

Optical automatic gain control smooths maser clock amplitude fluctuations without phase shift. Uncomplicated optical system is more reliable than electrical transmission circuits which require phase-locked loops to compensate for shift. Maser feeds reference signal to linear fiber-optic analog transmitter which emits modulated laser beam directed to splitter. Splitter consists of dichroic mirrors and associated lenses for distributing beam to output ports. Cables attached there guide signals to receiving station.

A miniaturized digital telemetry system for physiological data transmission

A physiological date telemetry system, consisting basically of a portable unit and a ground base station was designed, built, and tested. The portable unit to be worn by the subject is composed of a single crystal controlled transmitter with AM transmission of digital data and narrowband FM transmission of voice; a crystal controlled FM receiver; thirteen input channels follwed by a PCM encoder (three of these channels are designed for ECG data); a calibration unit; and a transponder control system. The ground base station consists of a standard telemetry reciever, a decoder, and an FM transmitter for transmission of voice and transponder signals to the portable unit. The ground base station has complete control of power to all subsystems in the portable unit. The phase-locked loop circuit which is used to decode the data, remains in operation even when the signal from the portable unit is interrupted.

Investigations of coherent structures in free turbulent shear flows

The dynamics of large-scale coherent structures in general, and studies based on flow-visualization and phase-locked hot-wire measurements of the structures in the near fields of circular jets are considered. A study involving the nature of coherent structures under conditions of stable vortex pairing induced by controlled axisymmetric acoustic excitation reveals that azimuthal coherence initially enhanced by the excitation is lost before the end of the potential core through evolution of azimuthal lobe structures and turbulent breakdown. The evolution of a spark-induced spot in an axisymmetric turbulent mixing layer is also investigated, and the coherent Reynolds stress associated with the spot is found to be much higher than the background turbulence Reynolds stress. In addition, the state of organization in a high Reynolds number unperturbed axisymmetric mixing layer is examined, and it is shown that the shear layer is infrequently organized and the motions are intensely three-dimensional, while tearing and fractional pairing occur as frequently as complete pairing.

Multiple sensory and motor cues enhance the accuracy of pursuit eye movements

Oculomotor pursuit can be elicited by moving visual, tactile, proprioceptive, and occasionally auditory targets presented singly. Both the accuracy and amount of pursuit are enhanced if the position of the target is specified by cues from several sensory modalities. When the motion of the target is topologically related to movements of the subject's arm, the subject's eyes are more closely phase-locked with the target and reversals of the eyes generally precede target reversal by 10-20 ma.

Rangefinder Corrects for Air Density and Moisture

Proposed distance-measuring instrument compensates for variations in both dry atmospheric density and water-vapor content. Instrument would be expected to be more accurate than previous laser-ranging instruments. New rangefinder sends three signal trains to target: Two trains are at optical frequencies, and one is at a microwave frequency. All three signals are phase-locked.

IUE ultraviolet spectra of V Sagittae

Ultraviolet spectra obtained by the IUE of the short-period, intrinsically variable, double-lined spectroscopic and eclipsing close binary V Sagittae are discussed. The 18 spectra measured between 1150 and 1950 A and 1850 and 3300 A over an interval of 179 days are shown to be dominated by emission features, with only Lyman alpha absorption apparent. Examination of the smooth continuum inferred for each spectrum results in a B-V color index of 0.20. The observed V magnitudes do not show a phase-locked or typical eclipsing light curve, due to intrinsic variability in the UV as well as the visible. The calibrated, reddening-corrected UV fluxes are used in an attempt to determine system temperature, but it is found that the continuum is most likely composite and variable, and thus a unique temperature assignment is impossible. The V Sge system is interpreted as possibly consisting of a primary early A, near-main-sequence star with an effective temperature of 10,000 K and a secondary thick, hot disk (temperature 17,000-300,000 K) embedding a white dwarf.

Algol - A further study of the optical polarization

Results of a study of the phase-locked optical polarization of the Algol triple star system are presented. Polarimetry was obtained in the B filter during 75 nights from 1979 to 1980, and results were folded on the AB orbital period for the equatorial Stokes parameters Q and U. As expected for a nearly edge-on system, the polarization variations are predominantly in one direction of the Stokes-vector plane, and are mainly second-harmonic in character. The variable polarization indicates an eigendirection for the AB system at an angle of 137 + or - 4 deg, and a projected major axis of the third star at 133 + or - 3 deg with respect to the AB system. Considerations of the lowest-order theories of polarizing mechanisms, including limb polarization and reflection, indicate that the AB and AB-C orbital planes are almost normal to each other, rather than coplanar. An angular splitting in the Q-U curve between the two quadrature phases 0.25 and 0.75 is also found which can be explained by centrifugal flattening of the secondary's Roche lobe, or reflection from an optically thick, flattened gas cloud near the L1 point.

Acoustic and turbulence measurements of a tone-excited jet with and without flight simulation

Acoustic as well as turbulence measurements were made of tone-excited jets to obtain an understanding of the broadband noise augmentation mechanism. Results for both heated and unheated jets with and without flight simulation are presented for a range of excitation frequencies and levels, as well as for the zero order and first order spinning modes. It is argued that although the phase-locked large-scale turbulence structure is at the root of the noise amplification process, the actual noise generation mechanism lies in the small-scale turbulence. Results show that (1) the phase velocity of the excited large scale instability waves is subsonic relative to the ambient fluid and (2) broadband jet noise is almost uniform at all frequencies. Moreover, when the large-scale and small-scale structures are plotted against forward velocity (for a given upstream excitation level of 141 dB), the change in large-scale turbulence is negligible with forward velocity, whereas the small-scale turbulence decreases for both excited and unexcited jets. Also, the corresponding difference in far-field noise does not appear to change significantly, indicating that the changes in small-scale turbulence are responsible for jet noise amplification.

Transport Control for High-Density Digital Recorder

Tape capstan drive motor speed controlled by phase-locked loop to keep data rate off of tape compatible with demand clock rate preventing deskewbuffer overflow or underflow. Immunity to speed perturbations caused by data dropouts is obtained by switching to different data-channel reference signal whenever dropout is detected by frame synchronizer in channel currently in use. Desired tape speed is selected by changing frequency of demand rate clock and changing divisor N in programable divider.

Commutated automatic gain control system

A commutated automatic gain control (AGC) system was designed and built for a prototype Loran C receiver. The receiver uses a microcomputer to control a memory aided phase-locked loop (MAPLL). The microcomputer also controls the input/output, latitude/longitude conversion, and the recently added AGC system. The circuit designed for the AGC is described, and bench and flight test results are presented. The AGC circuit described actually samples starting at a point 40 microseconds after a zero crossing determined by the software lock pulse ultimately generated by a 30 microsecond delay and add network in the receiver front end envelope detector.

Analysis of infrared emission from thin adsorbates

Fuel and lubricant deposits on solid surfaces, though often of similar visual appearance, differ in composition, depending on the nature of the deposit formers and the circumstances of deposition. To help establish these relations an Infrared Emission Fourier Polarization Microspectrophotometer was constructed to record infrared spectra from the deposits on their original support. By focussing on small aggregates with a reflecting microscope objective and by discriminating against the randomly polarized blackbody radiation with a rotating polarizing filter phase-locked to an amplifier, excellent Fourier emission spectra of polarized bands could be obtained. In many instances, the microscope objective was adequate without the polarizer. The analysis was calibrated against a very thin film of polyethylene terephthalate attached to a highly reflective aluminum mirror on the sample positioner.

Control of mutual phase locking of monolithically integrated semiconductor lasers

The degree of phase locking between the individual laser apertures is the major issue in phase-locked laser arrays. A description is presented of a series of experiments in which the mutual coherence of two laser apertures is characterized by measuring the visibility of the far-field interference fringes. Attention is given to an approach which makes it possible to control continuously the degree of coherence by means of a separate contact configuration. An investigation was conducted of the far-field radiation patterns of pairs of lasers obtained under various conditions. The results of the present study demonstrate the feasibility of controlling the mutual phase locking between semiconductor lasers by varying the gain distribution between their pumped stripes.

The preferred-mode coherent structure in the near field of an axisymmetric jet with and without excitation

Visualization and phase-locked hot-wire measurements have been used to investigate the preferred-mode coherent structure in the near field of an axisymmetric jet for different Reynolds numbers and for the two limiting asymptotic states of the exit boundary layer: laminar and fully developed turbulent. Distributions of phase-averaged longitudinal and lateral velocities, coherent vorticity, coherent and incoherent turbulence Reynolds stresses, and coherent strain rate and production have been obtained over the spatial extent of the coherent structure for a Strouhal number of 0.3. It is found that these properties are independent of the initial conditions, but weakly dependent on the Reynolds number up to about 100,000. The naturally occurring coherent structure in the unexcited jet, educed via an optimized conditional sampling scheme, shows no clear dependence on the jet Reynolds number up to 800,000.

Clock synchronization of a large multiprocessor system in the presence of malicious faults

An interconnection algorithm is presented for achieving clock synchronization in a multiprocessor system. The system is assumed to be maliciously faulty, i.e., some processors are out of synchronization and lie about their clock state to other intragroup or intergroup processors. A phase-locked clock network design is proposed which groups the clocks in the system into diverse clusters. The clusters are then treated as single clock units from the perspective of the network. The algorithm minimizes the number of interconnections while permitting synchronization of large multiprocessor systems controlling time-critical applications such as aircraft, nuclear reactors and industrial processes.

Design Concept for a Rapid Automatic Sync Acquisition System

A design has been conceived for a system intended to provide rapid command sync acquisition between widely separated transmitter-receivers, such as between a spacecraft telemetry transmitter, and a ground-based receiver. Use of the system in commercial satellite communications would facilitate rapid sync acquisition between stations and regaining of data lock after interruption or equipment failure. The system is based on a rapid, automatic range-adjustment approach rather than the time-consuming cycle slipping or stepping techniques of conventional phase-locked loops.

A Long-Range Precision Ranging System

A technique is presented that may be used for precision real-time continuous range measuring at long ranges. The technique uses a carrier that is phase modulated by a pseudo-random binary sequence. The characteristics of the sequence that make it acquirable are discussed. The general form of a receiver capable of tracking the carrier is given and is shown to be a kind of phase-locked loop. A two-loop system capable of tracking a pseudo-random sequence and its clock is given. The combination of the receiver and the sequence tracking system form a ranging receiver. The power division necessary between the carrier and the sidebands is shown to be determined by the noise bandwidths of the two tracking systems. The bandwidths necessary for tracking space probes and Earth satellites are given and some experiments in radar-tracking Earth satellites are described. Based on these experiments, estimates are made of the useful range of such a system in tracking space probes.
