Evolving Competitive Markets in SAPP: Leveraging Competitive Wholesale Electricity Markets to Drive Renewable Generation Capacity in the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP)

The SADC region has significant natural resource potential to increase renewable energy generation, improve electricity reliability, and support economic development. This research finds an apparent lack of confidence from electricity infrastructure investors in SAPP wholesale electricity markets, which increases risk perception and lowers the likelihood of capital deployment. With respect to free market fundamentals, competitive market obstacles and renewable energy development obstacles are characterized. Stakeholders identified the top obstacles to well-functioning competitive markets as insufficient transmission infrastructure for interconnection and regional movement of electricity, dominance of national single-buyer markets, and lack of or weak nation-state regulatory frameworks. Stakeholders prioritized the top three obstacles for renewable energy development as a lack of viable commercial arrangements for variable renewable energy (VRE) balancing, lack of functional and consistent nation-level regulations, and higher project costs related to reliance on imported equipment. With respect to potential solution options, stakeholders prioritized the development of new cost allocation and finance methods to facilitate new transmission expansion, training to educate new or potential new market entrants on SAPP processes, as well as modeling and analysis of regional SAPP participation benefits disaggregated to the nation-state level. From these perspectives, this research identified strategy options for consideration including transitioning SAPP to a regional transmission operator (RTO) for operation and planning of cross-border transmission facilities and market administration, shifting operations of SAPP member transmission systems to Independent System Operators (ISOs), establishing a regional regulatory authority and enhancing market data transparency. Implementing these reforms is expected to be challenging, but not insurmountable, given the domestic political, legal, and jurisdictional complexities of the SADC region.

Multi-physics melt pool modeling and process optimization for laser direct energy deposition of Nb-based refractory C103: Defect formation, geometric precision, and process mapping

Recent developments in additive manufacturing (AM) technology have reignited interest in the fabrication of the Nb-based refractory C103 alloy offering solutions to the challenges posed by traditional manufacturing methods. However, the limited numerical and experimental studies on laser direct energy deposition (DED) of C103 have hindered the understanding of the relationships between process parameters and build quality. This has made it challenging to consistently produce parts with the desired quality and microstructure suitable for critical applications. In this study, we focus on optimizing the laser DED process for C103 by employing a hybrid approach that combines experimental techniques and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). This approach facilitates the development of process maps for defect detection and geometric precision. To achieve this, multi-layer C103 samples were fabricated using laser DED under various process parameters, enabling the creation of a process map for defect detection. Additionally, a multi-physics, multiphase simulation framework was developed within a high-performance computing (HPC) environment to establish process maps for geometric precision. Using these process maps, printability windows were identified for achieving both the desired geometric accuracy and defect-free prints. It was observed that prints with a power-to-velocity (P/V) ratio close to unity resulted in defect-free outcomes. This study provides a foundation for reducing design lead time and rejected parts, ultimately optimizing the laser DED process for C103.

Three‐Tier Hierarchical Structures for Extreme Pool Boiling Heat Transfer Performance

Abstract Boiling is an effective energy‐transfer process with substantial utility in energy applications. Boiling performance is described mainly by the heat‐transfer coefficient (HTC) and critical heat flux (CHF). Recent efforts for the simultaneous enhancement of HTC and CHF have been limited by an intrinsic trade‐off between them—HTC enhancement requires high nucleation‐site density, which can increase bubble coalescence resulting in limited CHF enhancement. In this work, this trade‐off is overcome by designing three‐tier hierarchical structures. The bubble coalescence is minimized to enhance the CHF by defining nucleation sites with microcavities interspersed within hemi‐wicking structures. Meanwhile, the reduced nucleation‐site density is compensated for by incorporating nanostructures that promote evaporation for HTC enhancement. The hierarchical structures demonstrate the simultaneous enhancement of HTC and CHF up to 389% and 138%, respectively, compared to a smooth surface. This extreme boiling performance can lead to significant energy savings in a variety of boiling applications.

Dose-Response Relationship in Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy for Hepatocellular Carcinoma: A Pooled Analysis of an Asian Liver Radiation Therapy Group Study

Despite the worldwide implementation of stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), there is a lack of consensus guideline on prescription dose. Herein, this multinational study aimed to investigate the effects of the prescribed radiation dose on oncologic outcomes of SBRT for HCC.
