Virtual Antiparticle Pairs, the Unit of Charge Epsilon and the QCD Coupling Alpha(sub s)

New semi-classical models of virtual antiparticle pairs are used to compute the pair lifetimes, and good agreement with the Heisenberg lifetimes from quantum field theory (QFT) is found. When the results of the new models and QFT are combined, formulae for e and alpha(sub s)(q) are derived in terms of only h and c. The modeling method applies to both the electromagnetic and color forces. Evaluation of the action integral of potential field fluctuation for each interaction potential yields approx. = h/2 for both electromagnetic and color fluctuations, in agreement with QFT. Thus each model is a quantized semiclassical representation for such virtual antiparticle pairs, to good approximation. This work reduces the number of arbitrary parameters of the Standard Model by two from 18 to 16. These are remarkable, unexpected results from a basically classical method.

Analysis of laser-induced modification of collagen structure using nonlinear optical microscopy

Nonlinear optical microscopy is used to monitor changes in the collagen structure of patellar ligament after IR laser heating up to a temperature of 60 °C. Pre-denaturation modification of the tissue matrix exhibits specific properties and consists in splitting of initially parallel fibre bundles into array of divergent fibres. Image processing employing Fast Fourier transform analysis is used for characterising images of the fibre structure and determining the collagen orientation index. An increase in manifestation of laser-induced disordering with an increase in IR laser radiation power from 0.3 to 2 W is accompanied by a decrease in the collagen orientation index. The specific disorganisation of the collagen tissue structure during laser heating is supposed to be due to fast speed and local action of the laser heating, which leads to mechanical distortions of the structural elements of tissue matrix. Semi-classical Reissner-Nordstrom model for the structure of charged leptons

The lepton self-mass problem is examined within the framework of the quantum theory of electromagnetism and gravity. Consideration is given to the Reissner-Nordstrom solution to the Einstein-Maxwell classical field equations for an electrically charged mass point, and the WKB theory for a semiclassical system with total energy zero is used to obtain an expression for the Einstein-Maxwell action factor. The condition obtained is found to account for the observed mass values of the three charged leptons, and to be in agreement with the correspondence principle.

Domain decomposition efforts in Chroma

Multilevel integration is a technique used in lattice quantum chromodynamics (LQCD) simulations, where the correlation functions are decomposed into factors that depend only on fields localized within specific lattice subdomains. The approach significantly improves the efficiency of the calculations because the factors can be independently integrated. The main challenge in implementing multilevel integration is that the standard formulation of the LQCD action is not local in the presence of fermions. However, past studies have shown that approximations of the quark propagator and the fermionic determinant, which depend on the gauge fields within specific subdomains, can still be effective. We will present the current progress in supporting domain decomposition within the Chroma software, which is necessary for implementing multilevel integration approaches. Most of the efforts have focused on extending the Chroma code base to efficiently manipulate subdomains for lattice fields and operators, as well as performing inversions and eigendecompositions within these domains.

Fast and scalable quantum Monte Carlo simulations of electron-phonon models

We introduce methodologies for highly scalable quantum Monte Carlo simulations of electron-phonon models, and report benchmark results for the Holstein model on the square lattice. The determinant quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) method is a widely used tool for simulating simple electron-phonon models at finite temperatures, but incurs a computational cost that scales cubically with system size. Alternatively, near-linear scaling with system size can be achieved with the hybrid Monte Carlo (HMC) method and an integral representation of the Fermion determinant. Here, we introduce a collection of methodologies that make such simulations even faster. To combat "stiffness" arising from the bosonic action, we review how Fourier acceleration can be combined with time-step splitting. To overcome phonon sampling barriers associated with strongly-bound bipolaron formation, we design global Monte Carlo updates that approximately respect particle-hole symmetry. To accelerate the iterative linear solver, we introduce a preconditioner that becomes exact in the adiabatic limit of infinite atomic mass. Finally, we demonstrate how stochastic measurements can be accelerated using fast Fourier transforms. Here, these methods are all complementary and, combined, may produce multiple orders of magnitude speedup, depending on model details.

BMS symmetry via AdS/CFT

With a view to understanding extended-BMS symmetries in the framework of the AdS 4 /CFT 3 correspondence, asymptotically AdS geometries are constructed with null impulsive shockwaves involving a discontinuity in superrotation parameters. The holographic dual is proposed to be a two-dimensional Euclidean defect conformal field localized on a particular timeslice in a three-dimensional conformal field theory on de Sitter spacetime. The defect conformal field theory generates a natural action of the Virasoro algebra. The large radius of curvature limit ℓ → ∞ yields spacetimes with nontrivial extended-BMS charges corresponding to a single set of Virasoro charges.

On restricting first order form of gauge theories to one-loop order

Highlights: • We prove the equivalence of the first and second-order formalism. • We use Lagrange multiplier fields to limit radiative effects to one-loop order. • We prove that the quantized theory is both renormalizable and unitary. The first order form of the Yang–Mills and Einstein–Hilbert actions are quantized, and it is shown how Green’s functions computed using the first and the second order form of these theories are related. Next we show how by use of Lagrange multiplier fields (LM), radiative effects beyond one-loop order can be eliminated. This allows one to compute Green’s functions exactly without loss of unitarity. The consequences of this restriction on radiative effects are examined for the Yang–Mills and Einstein–Hilbert actions. In these two gauge theories, we find that the quantized theory is both renormalizable and unitary once the LM field is used to eliminate effects beyond one-loop order.

Towards an “$\mathrm{AdS}_1$/$\mathrm{CFT}_0$” correspondence from the $\mathrm{D}$(-1)/$\mathrm{D}$7 system?

We argue that a type IIB Euclidean supergravity solution of the form $\mathbb{R}$ x S 1 x $\mathbb{T}$ 8 with imaginary self-dual F 1 flux through $\mathbb{R}$ x S 1 belongs to the chain of AdS d x S d x $\mathbb{T}$ 10-2d vacua with (imaginary) self-dual Fd flux, where d ≤ 5. Such vacua come from the near-horizon of D(d - 2)/D(8 - d) branes and are supersymmetric for odd values of d. For d = 1 we speculate that the hallmark of conformal symmetry for the matrix model dual is a vanishing free energy. The matrix dual was recently constructed by [1] by adding matrix interactions coming from strings stretching between the D(-1) and D7 branes to the IKKT matrix model. We find that the corresponding supergravity solution indeed has vanishing on-shell action. Specific F 5 fluxes need to be switched on as a consequence of (a T-dual version of) the Hanany-Witten effect.

Nonlinear Hall effect in Weyl semimetals induced by chiral anomaly

In this work, we predict a nonlinear Hall effect in certain Weyl semimetals with broken inversion symmetry. When the energy dispersions about pairs of Weyl nodes are skewed-the Weyl cones are "tilted"-the concerted actions of the anomalous velocity and the chiral anomaly give rise to the nonlinear Hall effect. This Hall conductivity is linear in both electric and magnetic fields and depends critically on the tilting of the Weyl cones. We also show that this effect does not rely on a finite Berry curvature dipole, in contrast with the intrinsic quantum nonlinear Hall effect that was recently observed in type-II Weyl semimetals.

𝐹 𝐾 ⁡/𝐹 𝜋 from Möbius domain-wall fermions solved on gradient-flowed HISQ ensembles

We report the results of a lattice quantum chromodynamics calculation of 𝐹 𝐾 ⁡/𝐹 𝜋 using Möbius domain-wall fermions computed on gradient-flowed 𝑁 𝑓 =2 +1 +1 highly improved staggered quark (HISQ) ensembles. The calculation is performed with five values of the pion mass ranging from 130 ≲ 𝑚 𝜋 ≲ 400 MeV , four lattice spacings of 𝑎 ∼ 0.15, 0.12, 0.09 and 0.06 fm and multiple values of the lattice volume. The interpolation/extrapolation to the physical pion and kaon mass point, the continuum, and infinite volume limits are performed with a variety of different extrapolation functions utilizing both the relevant mixed-action effective field theory expressions as well as discretization-enhanced continuum chiral perturbation theory formulas. We find that the 𝑎 ∼ 0.06 fm ensemble is helpful, but not necessary to achieve a subpercent determination of 𝐹 𝐾 ⁡/𝐹 𝜋 . We also include an estimate of the strong isospin breaking corrections and arrive at a final result of 𝐹 $\hat{K}$ + ⁡ /𝐹 $\hat{𝜋}$ + = 1.1942⁢(45) with all sources of statistical and systematic uncertainty included. This is consistent with the Flavour Lattice Averaging Group average value, providing an important benchmark for our lattice action. Combining our result with experimental measurements of the pion and kaon leptonic decays leads to a determination of |𝑉 𝑢⁢𝑠 |/|𝑉 𝑢⁢𝑑 | = 0.2311⁢(10).

3d gravity from Virasoro TQFT: Holography, wormholes and knots

We further develop the description of three-dimensional quantum gravity with negative cosmological constant in terms of Virasoro TQFT formulated in our previous paper [SciPost Phys. 15, 151 (2023)]. We compare the partition functions computed in the Virasoro TQFT formalism to the semiclassical evaluation of Euclidean gravity partition functions. This matching is highly non-trivial, but can be checked directly in some examples. We then showcase the formalism in action, by computing the gravity partition functions of many relevant topologies. For holographic applications, we focus on the partition functions of Euclidean multi-boundary wormholes with three-punctured spheres as boundaries. This precisely quantifies the higher moments of the structure constants in the proposed ensemble boundary dual and subjects the proposal to thorough checks. Finally, we investigate in detail the example of the figure eight knot complement as a hyperbolic 3-manifold. We show that the Virasoro TQFT partition function is identical to the partition function computed in Teichmüller theory, thus giving strong evidence for the equivalence of these TQFTs. We also show how to produce a large class of manifolds via Dehn surgery on the figure eight knot.

Magnetic-Field-Assisted Terahertz Quantum Cascade Laser Operating up to 225 K

Advances in semiconductor bandgap engineering have resulted in the recent development of the terahertz quantum cascade laser1. These compact optoelectronic devices now operate in the frequency range 1.2-5 THz, although cryogenic cooling is still required2.3. Further progress towards the realization of devices operating at higher temperatures and emitting at longer wavelengths (sub-terahertz quantum cascade lasers) is difficult because it requires maintaining a population inversion between closely spaced electronic sub-bands (1 THz approx. equals 4 meV). Here, we demonstrate a magnetic-field-assisted quantum cascade laser based on the resonant-phonon design. By applying appropriate electrical bias and strong magnetic fields above 16 T, it is possible to achieve laser emission from a single device over a wide range of frequencies (0.68-3.33 THz). Owing to the suppression of inter-landau-level non-radiative scattering, the device shows magnetic field assisted laser action at 1 THz at temperatures up to 215 K, and 3 THz lasing up to 225 K.

Path integral factorization and the gravitational effective action

Abstract We discuss the factorization and continuity properties of fields in the Euclidean gravitational path integral with higher dimension operators constructed from powers of the Riemann tensor. We construct the boundary terms corresponding to the microcanonical ensemble and show that the saddle point approximation to the path integral with a quasilocal energy constraint generally yields a saddle point with discontinuous temperature. This extends a previous result for the Euclidean Schwarzschild–de Sitter geometry in Einstein gravity and shows that it is robust against at least some types of quantum corrections from heavy fields. As an application, we compute the entropy of SdS in D = 4 using the BTZ method. Our result matches the entropy calculated using Wald’s formula.

Celestial operator product expansions and w 1+∞ symmetry for all spins

The operator product expansion of massless celestial primary operators of arbitrary spin is investigated. Poincaré symmetry is found to imply a set of recursion relations on the operator product expansion coefficients of the leading singular terms at tree-level in a holomorphic limit. The symmetry constraints are solved by an Euler beta function with arguments that depend simply on the right-moving conformal weights of the operators in the product. These symmetry-derived coefficients are shown not only to match precisely those arising from momentum-space tree-level collinear limits, but also to obey an infinite number of additional symmetry transformations that respect the algebra of w 1+∞ . In tree-level minimally-coupled gravitational theories, celestial currents are constructed from light transforms of conformally soft gravitons and found to generate the action of w 1+∞ on arbitrary massless celestial primaries. Results include operator product expansion coefficients for fermions as well as those arising from higher-derivative non-minimal couplings of gluons and gravitons.

SQUID Readout of a High-$Q$ Superconducting $LC$ Resonator

We demonstrate the readout of a superconducting $LC$ resonator, with $Q \approx 2 \times 10^{6}$ at approximately 250 kHz, using a dc SQUID followed by a SQUID series-array amplifier readout chain. We find that $Q$ depends on the SQUID flux-bias point, increasing near the shallow-slope point of the SQUID modulation curve and decreasing near the steep-slope point, consistent with the previously observed SQUID damping effects. From this variation, we infer the SQUID effective input impedance. We further infer the effective temperature of the resonator circuit from the resonance peak in the noise spectrum and show that it also depends on the SQUID flux-bias point, suggesting a possible contribution from SQUID back-action noise. This system provides a working prototype for future experiments based on lumped-element resonators with SQUID readout, in particular low-mass axion searches within the DMRadio program.

Symmetric U(1) and Z 2 spin liquids on the pyrochlore lattice

The geometrically frustrated three-dimensional pyrochlore lattice has been long predicted to host a quantum spin liquid, an intrinsic long-range entangled state with fractionalized excitations. To date, most proposals for pyrochlore materials have focused on quantum spin ice, a U(1) quantum spin liquid whose only low energy excitations are emergent photons of Maxwell type. Here, we explore the possibility of finding pyrochlore quantum spin liquids whose low energy theories go beyond this standard one. We give a complete classification of symmetric U ( 1 ) and Z 2 spin liquids on the pyrochlore lattice within the projective symmetry group framework for fermionic spinons. We find 18 U ( 1 ) spin liquids and 28 Z 2 spin liquids that preserve pyrochlore space-group symmetry while, upon further imposing time-reversal symmetry, the numbers of classes become 16 and 48, respectively. For each class, the most general symmetry-allowed spinon mean-field Hamiltonian is given. Interestingly, we find that several U(1) spin liquid classes possess an unusual gapless multi-nodal-line structure (“nodal star”) in the spinon bands, which is protected by the projective actions of the threefold rotation and screw symmetries of the pyrochlore space group. Through a simple model, we study the effect of gauge fluctuations on such a nodal star spin liquid and propose that the leading terms in the low temperature specific heat have the scaling form C / T ~ T + T / ln T , in contrast to the form C / T ~ T 2 of the standard U(1) pyrochlore spin liquid with gapped spinons.

Lattice B -field correlators for heavy quarks

We analyze the color-magnetic (or “ B ”) field two-point function that encodes the finite-mass correction to the heavy-quark momentum-diffusion coefficient. The simulations are done on fine isotropic lattices in the quenched approximation at 1.5 T c , using a range of gradient flow times for noise suppression and operator renormalization. The continuum extrapolation is performed at fixed flow time followed by a second extrapolation to zero flow time. Perturbative calculations to next-to-leading order of this correlation function, matching gradient-flowed correlators to MS ¯ , are used to resolve nontrivial renormalization issues. We perform a spectral reconstruction based on perturbative model fits to estimate the coefficient κ B of the finite-mass correction to the heavy-quark momentum-diffusion coefficient. The approach we present here yields high-precision data for the correlator with all renormalization issues incorporated at next-to-leading order and is also applicable for actions with dynamical fermions.
