A more general system for Poisson series manipulation.

The design of a working Poisson series processor system is described that is more general than those currently in use. This system is the result of a series of compromises among efficiency, generality, ease of programing, and ease of use. The most general form of coefficients that can be multiplied efficiently is pointed out, and the place of general-purpose algebraic systems in celestial mechanics is discussed.

A 727/JT8D-100 series engine exhaust system propulsion performance model test

The results are presented from testing one-eighth scale models of the Pratt and Whitney aircraft reference and Boeing nozzles for the JT8D-100 series mixed flow engines. The objective of the test was to obtain the nozzle velocity and flow coefficients for the reference configurations and compare these with the Boeing configurations which incorporated a longer splitter between the fan and primary flows. A further comparison was made between the JT8D-100 series nozzles and the Boeing JT8D-9/727 production nozzle performance. A statistical analysis was used to compare configurations which showed the performance (velocity coefficient) of the reference and the Boeing configuration was the same for the JT8D-109. It also showed no difference between reference and the Boeing configuration for the JT8D-115 and no difference for the JT8D-117 nozzles. Bypass ratio (match) was shown to be equally dependent on splitter position as on nozzle area within the range investigated. The nozzles were very similar in flow coefficient within an engine family. Excellent profile data was recorded. The effects of swirl on the nozzle performance was examined and found to degrade the velocity and flow coefficients.

Ganged series potentiometer mixer networks

A ganged potentiometer with the interesting property of a constant 10k ohm or greater series impedance for all rotations of the shaft was rediscovered. The device provided a versatile passive mixer circuit when used with most signal sources and can be used as a variable series input summing resistor in operational amplifier networks. The potentiometer gave simple solutions to missing problems with a single control knob.

Evaluation of a series hybrid thrust bearing at DN values to three million. 2: Fabrication and testing

Results of tests made to determine the experimental performance of a series hybrid bearing are reported. The bearing consists of a 150 mm ball bearing and a centrifugally actuated, conical, fluid film bearing fitting an envelope with an outer radius of 86.4 mm (3.4 in.) and inner radius of 71 mm (2.8 in.). Tests were conducted up to 16,500 rpm, at which speed an axial load of 15,568 N (3500 lb) was safely supported by the hybrid bearing system. Through the employment of the series hybrid bearing principle, it was possible to reduce the effective ball bearing speed to approximately one-half of the shaft speed. A reduction of this magnitude should result in a tenfold increase in the ball bearing fatigue life. A successful simulation of fluid film bearing lubricant supply failure, performed repeatedly at an operating speed of 10,000 rpm, resulted in complete and smooth change over to full scale ball bearing operation when the oil supply to the fluid film bearing was discontinued. Reactivation of the fluid film supply system produced a flawless return to the original mode of hybrid operation.

Necessary and sufficient conditions for the complete controllability and observability of systems in series using the coprime factorization of a rational matrix

The series connection of two linear time-invariant systems that have minimal state space system descriptions is considered. From these descriptions, strict-system-equivalent polynomial matrix system descriptions in the manner of Rosenbrock are derived. They are based on the factorization of the transfer matrix of the subsystems as a ratio of two right or left coprime polynomial matrices. They give rise to a simple polynomial matrix system description of the tandem connection. Theorem 1 states that for the complete controllability and observability of the state space system description of the series connection, it is necessary and sufficient that certain 'denominator' and 'numerator' groups are coprime. Consequences for feedback systems are drawn in Corollary 1. The role of pole-zero cancellations is explained by Lemma 3 and Corollaires 2 and 3.

Series solution for the planar asymmetric blunt-body problem

Accurate semianalytic solutions to the inverse blunt-body problem have been obtained using a method of series expansion. Rational fractions are employed for series summation and analytic continuation. Angles of incidence up to 30 deg and Mach numbers as low as 2 have been considered. The maximum-entropy streamline will not wet the body surface in asymmetric flow. It may pass either above or below the stagnation streamline. Limit lines appear in the supersonic portion of the flow field, both in the shock layer and in its upstream analytic continuation.

Ultraviolet solar identifications based on extended absorption series observed in the laboratory spectrum of Si I

The absorption spectrum of Si I in the wavelength region between 1500 and 1900 A has been photographed at high resolution. The silicon vapor was produced in a 122-cm-long King furnace at 1800 to 2300 C. Forty-two Rydberg series have been observed from the ground state terms 3p(2)3P and 1D to terms associated with the 3pns and 3pnd configurations. All of the series from these configurations with J less than 4 have been extended with the 3pnd 3D(3) levels reaching n = 56. Numerous perturbations have been observed. This laboratory work has provided the basis for extending the identification of silicon lines in the solar spectrum. Nearly all lines found in the laboratory spectrum are also found in rocket spectrograms of the solar chromosphere. More than 300 lines have been attributed to Si I. The excellent correlation between laboratory and solar Si I lines is illustrated.

Design and evaluation of a 3 million DN series-hybrid thrust bearing

The design and experimental evaluation of a series-hybrid thrust bearing, consisting of a 150-mm ball bearing and a centrifugally actuated, conical, fluid-film bearing, is presented. Tests were conducted up to 16,000 rpm and at this speed an axial load of 15,600 N (3500 lb) was safely supported by the hybrid bearing system. Through the series-hybrid bearing principle, the effective ball bearing speed was reduced to approximately one-half of the shaft speed. A speed reduction of this magnitude would result in a tenfold increase in the ball bearing fatigue life. A successful evaluation of fluid-film bearing lubricant supply failure was performed repeatedly at an operating speed of 10,000 rpm. A complete and smooth changeover to full-scale ball bearing operation was effected when the oil supply to the fluid-film bearing was cut off. Reactivation of the fluid-film oil supply system produced a flawless return to the original mode of hybrid operation.

Power series solutions of ordinary differential equations in MACSYMA

A program is described which extends the differential equation solving capability of MACSYMA to power series solutions and is available via the SHARE library. The program is directed toward those classes of equations with variable coefficients (in particular, those with singularities) and uses the method of Frobenius. Probably the most important distinction between this package and others currently available or being developed is that, wherever possible, this program will attempt to provide a complete solution to the equation rather than an approximation, i.e., a finite number of terms. This solution will take the form of a sum of infinite series.

An endurance test of a 900 series 30-cm engineering model ion thruster

The 10,000 hour endurance test of the first engineering model 30-cm thruster (S/N 701) identified discharge chamber erosion as a life limiting problem. Modifications to minimize this problem have been implemented in the 900 series thrusters. This paper describes a test conducted to evaluate the success of these modifications. The post-test analysis results of thruster 701 are summarized and the erosion reducing modifications described. Test results for thruster 901 up to 4165 hours, when the test was interrupted by a shorted wire, are described. The conclusions of a post-test examination of thruster 901 are included. Also being evaluated was a thermal vacuum breadboard SCR series inverter power processor which is described.

A user oriented computer program for the analysis of microwave mixers, and a study of the effects of the series inductance and diode capacitance on the performance of some simple mixers

A user oriented computer program for analyzing microwave and millimeter wave mixers with a single Schottky barrier diode of known I-V and C-V characteristics is described. The program first performs a nonlinear analysis to determine the diode conductance and capacitance waveforms produced by the local oscillator. A small signal linear analysis is then used to find the conversion loss, port impedances, and input noise temperature of the mixer. Thermal noise from the series resistance of the diode and shot noise from the periodically pumped current in the diode conductance are considered. The effects of the series inductance and diode capacitance on the performance of some simple mixer circuits using a conventional Schottky diode, a Schottky diode in which there is no capacitance variation, and a Mott diode are studied. It is shown that the parametric effects of the voltage dependent capacitance of a conventional Schottky diode may be either detrimental or beneficial depending on the diode and circuit parameters.

Lyman-alpha and Balmer-series fluorescence from hydrogen photofragments of H2O vapor

Production cross sections associated with the atomic hydrogen Lyman-alpha and Balmer-series (3-9 to 2) fluorescence observed in H2O photodissociation are measured, and maximum fluorescence production cross sections for the two series are reported. Repulsive potential energy curves corresponding to the respective pseudodiatomic OH-H(n) molecule are constructed according to the Franck-Condon principle, and the efficiencies for converting H(2S) to H(2P) by H2 collisions and by H2O collisions are estimated. The data are considered with reference to cometary photochemistry.

Hydroelastic vibration analysis of partially liquid-filled shells using a series representation of the liquid

A series representation of the oscillatory behavior of incompressible nonviscous liquids contained in partially filled elastic tanks is presented. Each term is selected on the basis of hydroelastic vibrations in circular cylindrical tanks. Using a complementary energy principle, the superposition of terms is made to approximately satisfy the liquid-tank interface compatibility. This analysis is applied to the gravity sloshing and hydroelastic vibrations of liquids in hemispherical tanks and in a typical elastic aerospace propellant tank. With only a few series terms retained, the results correlate very well with existing analytical results, NASTRAN-generated analytical results, and experimental test results. Hence, although each term is based on a cylindrical tank geometry, the superposition can be successfully applied to noncylindrical tanks.

Electron-temperature dependence of dissociative recombination of electrons with CO(+)-(CO)n-series ions

A microwave afterglow mass spectrometer apparatus is used to determine the dependence on electron temperature T sub e of the recombination coefficients alpha sub n of the dimer and trimer ions of the series CO+.(CO) sub n. It is found that alpha sub 1 = (1.3 + or - 0.3)x 0.000001 (T sub e(K)/300) to the -0.34; and alpha sub 2 = (1.9 + or - 0.4)x 0.000001 (T sub e(K)/300) to the -0.33 cu cm/sec. These dependences on T sub e are quite different from those obtained previously for polar-cluster ions of the hydronium and ammonium series but are similar to that for simple diatomic ions.
