Collinear ferromagnetism with reduced moment length in kagome magnet Nd 3 ⁢Ru 4 ⁢Al 12

Here, we determine the magnetic ground state of the kagome lattice magnet Nd 3 ⁢Ru 4⁢ Al 12 by single-crystal neutron diffraction, supported by experiments with polarized neutrons. We identify this material as a collinear ferromagnet (“hex-FM”) with uniform moment length and ordering vector 𝑸 = 0, in contrast to a previous, seminal report that proposed unequal moment lengths on two Nd sites, here called the “ortho-FM” state. Our analysis of the flipping ratio in polarized neutron scattering is consistent with the hex-FM state. The results provide a microscopic basis for understanding the large fluctuation-induced Hall and Nernst responses near 𝑇 C ≈ 41K, as previously reported for Nd 3 ⁢Ru 4 ⁢Al 12 .

Observation of Unprecedented Fractional Magnetization Plateaus in a New Shastry-Sutherland Ising Compound

Geometrically frustrated magnetic systems, such as those based on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice (SSL), offer a rich playground for exploring unconventional magnetic states. The delicate balance between competing interactions in these systems leads to the emergence of novel phases. We present the characterization of Er 2 ⁢Be 2⁢ GeO 7 , an SSL compound with Er 3+ ions forming orthogonal dimers separated by nonmagnetic layers whose structure is invariant under the 𝑃⁢$\bar{4}21$⁢𝑚 space group. Neutron scattering reveals an antiferromagnetic dimer structure at zero field, typical of Ising spins on that lattice and consistent with the anisotropic magnetization observed. However, magnetization measurements exhibit fractional plateaus at 1/4 and 1/2 of saturation, in contrast to the expected 1/3 plateau of the SSL Ising model. By comparing the energy of candidate states with ground-state lower bounds we show that this behavior requires spatially anisotropic interactions, leading to an anisotropic Shastry-Sutherland Ising model symmetric under the 𝐶⁢𝑚⁢𝑚⁢2 space group. This anisotropy is consistent with the small orthorhombic distortion observed with single-crystal neutron diffraction. The other properties, including thermodynamics, which have been investigated theoretically using tensor networks, point to small residual interactions, potentially due to further couplings and quantum fluctuations. This study highlights Er 2 ⁢Be 2 ⁢GeO 7 as a promising platform for investigating exotic magnetic phenomena.

EuAuSb: An odd-parity helical variation of altermagnetism

EuAuSb is a triangular-lattice Dirac semimetal in which a topological Hall effect has been observed to develop in association with a magnetically ordered phase. Our single-crystal neutron diffraction measurements have identified an incommensurate helical order in which individual ferromagnetic Eu 2+ layers rotate in-plane by ∼ 120° from one layer to the next. An in-plane magnetic field distorts the incommensurate order, eventually leading to a first order transition to a state that is approximately commensurate and that is continuously polarized as the bulk magnetization approaches saturation. From an analysis of the magnetic diffraction intensities versus field, we find evidence for a dip in the ordered in-plane moment at the same field where the topological Hall effect is a maximum, and we propose that this is due to field-induced quantum spin fluctuations. Our electronic structure calculations yield exchange constants compatible with the helical order and show that the bands near the Fermi level lose their spin degeneracy via a mechanism similar to that in the collinear altermagnets. In conclusion, we find that, unlike the even symmetry seen in the altermagnets, the spin splitting in EuAuSb has odd-wave symmetry similar to that recently found in a number of coplanar magnetic materials.

Magnetic ground state and magnetic excitations in black dioptase Cu 6 Si 6 O 18

The low-temperature magnetic properties and magnetic structure of fully dehydrated black dioptase Cu 6 Si 6 O 18 have been studied by single-crystal neutron diffraction and magnetization measurements in magnetic fields up to 30 T. Here, the intrachain J c and interchain J a b interactions as well as the anisotropy of the exchange coupling J c have been determined using inelastic neutron-scattering techniques. Zero-field antiferromagnetic order at T N = 6.7 K can be described by a commensurate propagation vector of k = ( 0 , 0 , 3 / 2 ) with respect to the hexagonal R 3 ¯ :H unit cell. The Cu magnetic moments are aligned antiferromagnetically along the c axis with about 12 ° tilt and are coupled ferromagnetically between the chains. The high-field magnetization measurements provide strong evidence for the presence of a spin-flop phase above 8 T. We found that J c in black dioptase is significantly increased, while J a b is much weaker compared to its counterpart, green dioptase Cu 6 [ Si 6 O 18 ] 6 H 2 O . We suggest that black dioptase behaves like a nearly ideal S = 1 / 2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spiral chain with enhanced quantum fluctuations and weak spinon confinement J a b / J c ~ 0.02 .

Crystal and magnetic structures of magnetic topological insulators MnBi 2 Te 4 and MnBi 4 Te 7

Using single-crystal neutron diffraction, we present a systematic investigation of the crystal structure and magnetism of the van der Waals topological insulators MnBi 2 Te 4 and MnBi 4 Te 7 , where rich topological quantum states have been recently predicted and observed. Structural refinements reveal that considerable Bi atoms occupied on the Mn sites in both materials, distinct from the previously reported antisite disorder. We show unambiguously that MnBi 2 Te 4 orders antiferromagnetically below 24 K, featured by a magnetic symmetry R I - 3 c , while MnBi 4 Te 7 is antiferromagnetic below 13 K with a magnetic space group P c - 3 c 1 . They both present antiferromagnetically coupled ferromagnetic layers with spins along the c axis. We put forward a stacking rule for the crystal structure of an infinitely adaptive series MnBi 2 n Te 3 n + 1 ( n ≥ 1 ) with a building unit of [ Bi 2 Te 3 ] . Overall, by comparing the magnetic properties between MnBi 2 Te 4 and MnBi 4 Te 7 , together with recent density-functional theory calculations, we concluded that a two-dimensional magnetism limit might be realized in the derivatives. Our work may promote theoretical studies of topological magnetic states in the series of MnBi 2 n Te 3 n + 1 .

Canted Eu magnetic structure in EuMnSb 2

Magnetic ordering breaks the time-reversal symmetry, greatly impacting material topological properties. Here, we report the investigation of the magnetic properties of the layered EuMnSb 2 , which has two sets of magnetic sublattices. Both the magnetization and electrical resistivity reveal two phase transitions with one at T N,Eu ~21K and the other at T N,Mn ~346K. Single crystal neutron diffraction refinement indicates that both transitions are originated from magnetic ordering. Below T N,Mn , the Mn sublattice forms the C-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure with moments [(4.5±0.6)μB at 7 K] pointing along the a axis. Below T N,Eu , the Eu sublattice forms the canted A-type AFM structure with moments [(5.9±0.8)μB at 7 K] lying in the ac plane but pointing (41 ± 1)° away from the a axis. Quantitative analysis indicates that the spin-spin correlation length, while anisotropic, has long-range characteristic in all directions for both the Eu and Mn sublattices.

Pseudospin-lattice coupling and electric control of the square-lattice iridate Sr2IrO4

Sr 2 IrO 4 is an archetypal spin-orbit-coupled Mott insulator and has been extensively studied in part because of a wide range of predicted states. Limited experimental characterization of these states thus far brings to light the extraordinary susceptibility of the physical properties to the lattice, particularly, the Ir-O-Ir bond angle. Here, we report a microscopic rotation of the IrO 6 octahedra below 50 K measured by single crystal neutron diffraction. Overall, this sharp lattice anomaly provides keys to understanding the anomalous low-temperature physics and a direct confirmation of a crucial role that the Ir-O-Ir bond angle plays in determining the ground state. Indeed, as also demonstrated in this study, applied electric current readily weakens the antiferromagnetic order via the straightening of the Ir-O-Ir bond angle, highlighting that even slight change in the local structure can disproportionately affect the physical properties in the spin-orbit-coupled system.

High-field spin-flop state in green dioptase

The high-field magnetic properties and magnetic order of the gem mineral green dioptase Cu 6 [Si 6 O 18 ] .6 H 2 O have been studied by means of single-crystal neutron diffraction in magnetic fields up to 21 T and magnetization measurements up to 30 T. In zero field, the Cu 2+ moments in the antiferromagnetic chains are oriented along the c axis with a small off-axis tilt. For a field applied parallel to the c axis, the magnetization shows a spin-flop-like transition at B*=12.2 T at 1.5 K. Neutron diffraction experiments show a smooth behavior in the intensities of the magnetic reflections without any change in the periodicity of the magnetic structure. Bulk and microscopic observations are well described by a model of ferromagnetically coupled antiferromagnetic X X Z spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ chains, taking into account a change of the local easy-axis direction. We demonstrate that the magnetic structure evolves smoothly from a deformed Néel state at low fields to a deformed spin-flop state in a high field via a strong crossover around B*. The results are generalized for different values of interchain coupling and spin anisotropy.

Canted antiferromagnetic order and spin dynamics in the honeycomb-lattice compound Tb 2 Ir 3 Ga 9

Here, single-crystal neutron diffraction, inelastic neutron scattering, bulk magnetization measurements, and first-principles calculations are used to investigate the magnetic properties of the honeycomb lattice Tb 2 Ir 3 Ga 9 . While the R ln 2 magnetic contribution to the low-temperature entropy indicates a J eff = 1 / 2 moment for the lowest-energy crystal-field doublet, the Tb 3 + ions form a canted antiferromagnetic structure below 12.5 K. Due to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, the Tb moments in the a b plane are slightly canted towards b with a canted moment of 1.22 μ B per formula unit. A minimal x x z spin Hamiltonian is used to simultaneously fit the spin-wave frequencies along the high-symmetry directions and the field dependence of the magnetization along the three crystallographic axes. Long-range magnetic interactions for both in-plane and out-of-plane couplings up to the second nearest neighbors are needed to account for the observed static and dynamic properties. The z component of the exchange interactions between Tb moments is larger than the x and y components. This compound also exhibits bond-dependent exchange with negligible nearest-neighbor exchange coupling between moments parallel and perpendicular to the 4 f orbitals. Despite the J eff = 1 / 2 moments, the spin Hamiltonian is denominated by a large in-plane anisotropy K z ~ – 1 meV . DFT calculations confirm the antiferromagnetic ground state and the substantial interplane coupling at larger Tb-Tb distances.

Magnetic phase transition, magnetoresistance, and anomalous Hall effect in Ga-substituted Y Mn 6 Sn 6 with a ferromagnetic kagome lattice

The HfFe 6 Ge 6- type RMn 6 Sn 6 , a metallic system consisting of ferromagnetic kagome planes of Mn, has been recently shown to be a candidate hosting topological electronic properties. In this paper, we report magnetic and electronic properties in Y Mn 6 Sn 6-x Ga x single crystals via magnetic susceptibility, electrical transport, and single-crystal neutron diffraction measurements. We show that the magnetic ground state of Y Mn 6 Sn 6-x Ga x (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.61 ) evolves from incommensurate antiferromagnet to ferromagnet with increasing Ga substitution x, a feature which is accompanied by the decrease in magnetoresistance. Furthermore, the topological Hall effect observed in the pristine compound is absent in the Ga-substituted ones; instead, the anomalous Hall effect persists which may be associated with the Berry curvature of gapped Dirac bands near the Fermi energy. These results suggest strong correlation between electronic properties and magnetism in this topological magnet that can be readily tuned via Ga substitution.

Pressure dependence of the magnetic ground state in CePtSi 2

CePtSi 2 was reported to exhibit an antiferromagnetic order below T*=1.8 K at ambient pressure, a valence state change at ~1.2 GPa, and superconductivity in the range between 1.4 and 2.1 GPa with a maximum transition temperature of 0.14 K [T. Nakano et al., Phys. Rev. B 79, 172507 (2009)]. We have performed polycrystalline and single-crystal neutron diffraction experiments to determine the magnetic structure under ambient and high pressures. We found incommensurate magnetic peaks with a magnetic propagation vector of (0.32,0,0.11) at ambient pressure below T SDW ~ 1.25 K. Those magnetic peaks originate from a spin-density-wave order with the easy axis along the c axis and an averaged ordered moment of 0.45(5) μB , suggesting that there may be an intermediate phase between T* and T SDW . Applying pressures, the magnetic propagation vector shows no change and the magnetic order disappears around 1.0 GPa, which is much lower than the critical pressure for the superconducting phase. The results suggest that other than magnetic fluctuations may play a primary role in the superconducting pairing mechanism.

Canted antiferromagnetic phases in the candidate layered Weyl material EuMnSb 2

EuMnSb 2 is a candidate topological material which can be tuned towards a Weyl semimetal, but there are differing reports for its antiferromagnetic (AFM) phases. The coupling of bands dominated by pure Sb layers hosting topological fermions to Mn and Eu magnetic states provides a potential path to tune the topological properties. In this study we present single-crystal neutron diffraction, magnetization, and heat-capacity data as well as polycrystalline 151 Eu Mössbauer data which show that three AFM phases exist as a function of temperature, and we present a detailed analysis of the magnetic structure in each phase. The Mn magnetic sublattice orders into a C-type AFM structure below T N Mn = 323 (1) K with the ordered Mn magnetic moment μ Mn lying perpendicular to the layers. AFM ordering of the Eu sublattice occurs below T N Eu1 = 23 (1) K with the ordered Eu magnetic moment μ Eu canted away from the layer normal and μ Mn retaining its higher temperature order. μ Eu is ferromagnetically aligned within each Eu layer but exhibits a complicated AFM layer stacking. Both of these higher-temperature phases are described by magnetic space group (MSG) $\mathcal{Pn'm'a'}$ with the chemical and magnetic unit cells having the same dimensions. Cooling below T N Eu2 =9 (1) K reveals a third AFM phase where μ Mn remains unchanged but μ Eu develops an additional substantial in-plane canting. This phase has MSG $\mathcal{P11}$ $\frac{2_1}{a′}$. We also find some evidence of short-range magnetic correlations associated with the Eu between 12 K≲ T≲ 30 K . Using the determined magnetic structures, we postulate the signs of nearest-neighbor intralayer and interlayer exchange constants and the magnetic anisotropy within a general Heisenberg model. We then discuss implications of the various AFM states in EuMnSb 2 and their potential for tuning topological properties.

Weak itinerant magnetic phases of La 2 Ni 7

La 2 Ni 7 is an intermetallic compound that is thought to have itinerant magnetism with small moment (~0.15 µ B /Ni) ordering below 65 K. A recent study of single crystal samples by Ribeiro et. al. [Phys. Rev. B 105, 014412 (2022)] determined detailed anisotropic H-T phase diagrams and revealed three zero-field magnetic phase transitions at T 1 ~61.0 K, T 2 ~56.5 K, and T 3 ~42 K. In that study only the highest temperature phase is shown to have a clear ferromagnetic component. Here we present a single crystal neutron diffraction study determining the propagation vector and magnetic moment direction of the three magnetically ordered phases, two incommensurate and one commensurate, as a function of temperature. The higher temperature phases have similar, incommensurate propagation vectors, but with different ordered moment directions. At lower temperatures the magnetic order becomes commensurate with magnetic moments along the c direction as part of a first-order magnetic phase transition. In this study, we find that the low-temperature commensurate magnetic order is consistent with a proposal from earlier DFT calculations.

Magnetic Structure and Spin Fluctuation in Colossal Magnetoresistance Ferrimagnet Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6

The ferrimagnetic insulator Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 , which features a Curie temperature T c at 78 K and a delicate yet consequential magnetic frustration, exhibits colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) when the magnetic field is applied along the magnetic hard axis, surprisingly inconsistent with existing precedents [Y. Ni, H. Zhao, Y. Zhang, B. Hu, I. Kimchi, and G. Cao, Phys. Rev. B 103, L161105 (2021)]. This discovery motivates a thorough single-crystal neutron diffraction study in order to gain insights into the magnetic structure and its hidden correlation with the new type of CMR. Here we report a noncollinear magnetic structure below the T c where the moments lie predominantly within the basal plane but tilt toward the c axis by ≈10° at ambient conditions. A substantial magnetic diffuse scattering decays slowly and persists well above the T c . The evolution of the spin correlation lengths agrees well with the electrical resistivity, underscoring the role of spin fluctuation contributing to the magnetoresistivity near the transition. Further, application of magnetic field along the c axis renders a swift occurrence of CMR but only a slow tilting of the magnetic moments toward the c axis. The unparalleled changes indicate a nonconsequential role of magnetic polarization.

Noncoplanar magnetic order in the breathing kagome lattice compound Pb⁡(OF)⁢Cu 3 ⁢(SeO 3 ) 2⁢ (NO 3 )

We report a comprehensive study investigating the magnetic ordering properties of the quasi-two-dimensional breathing kagome lattice compound Pb⁡(OF)⁢Cu 3 ⁢(SeO 3 ) 2 ⁢(NO 3 ) using neutron diffraction and thermodynamic measurements. A long-range magnetic order emerges below the Néel temperature, T N = 18K, characterized by a propagating vector k = (0,0,1.5). Refinement analysis reveals that the copper moments display a noncoplanar arrangement, with the c components parallelly aligned within the breathing kagome plane and antiparallelly aligned between the layers. In-plane moment components form a chiral “tail-chase” structure. The magnetic order is quickly suppressed under moderate external fields applied both within and perpendicular to the kagome plane. Potential magnetic interactions that may be associated with the noncoplanar chiral magnetic structure are discussed.

Anomalous temperature-dependent magnetization in the nearly collinear antiferromagnet Y 2 Co 3

Y 2 Co 3 is a newly discovered antiferromagnetic (AFM) compound with distorted kagome layers. Here, previous investigations via bulk magnetization measurements suggested a complex non-collinear magnetic behavior, with magnetic moments primarily anti-aligned along the b axis and some canting towards the ac plane. In this study, we report the magnetic structure of Y 2 Co 3 to be an A-type AFM structure with ferromagnetic (FM) interactions within the distorted kagome plane and an inter-plane antiferromagnetic interaction, as determined by single crystal neutron diffraction. The magnetic moments align along the b axis, with minimal canting towards the c axis, at odds with the previous interpretation of bulk magnetization measurements. The magnetic moments on the two distinct Co sites are (0, -0.68, 0) μB and (0, 1.25, 0.07) μ B . We attribute the previously reported ”non-collinear” behavior to the considerable temperature dependence of itinerant AFM exchange interactions, induced by thermal contraction along the b axis. Additionally, our examination of lattice constants through pressure studies reveals compensating effects on FM and AFM interactions, resulting in negligible pressure dependence of T N .

Weak exchange striction between the 4 f and 3 d ions in the multiferroic GdMn 2 O 5

We used single-crystal neutron diffraction to investigate the magnetic structures of the multiferroic GdMn 2 O 5 . The system undergoes a first-order incommensurate to commensurate magnetic transition below 33 K, accompanied by the appearance of electric polarization P . Upon cooling, P increases smoothly while the magnetic order shows an abrupt enhancement in intensity below 20 K owing to the large increase of the rare-earth Gd moment. The contrasting temperature evolution of the magnetic order and polarization indicates the polarization is mainly driven by the exchange striction between the magnetic Mn ions. The incommensurate phase in the intermediate temperature range has a cycloidal modulation along the c axis, with spin configuration projected in the ab plane similar to the commensurate phase. The lack of observable bulk polarization suggests the exchange striction is not the dominant mechanism for the polarization in the incommensurate phase.

Emergence of topologically protected states in the MoTe 2 Weyl semimetal with layer-stacking order

Electronic tunability in crystals with weakly bound layers can be achieved through layer stacking order. One such example is MoTe 2 , where the low-temperature orthorhombic T d phase is topological and host to Weyl quasiparticles. The transition mechanism to the nontrivial topology is elucidated by single-crystal neutron diffraction. Upon cooling from the monoclinic 1 T' to the T d phase, diffuse scattering accompanies the transition, arising from random, in-plane layer displacements, and dissipates upon entering the T d phase. Here, diffuse scattering is observed only in the H0L plane due to irreversible layer shifts along the c axis that break the centrosymmetry of the monoclinic lattice.
