Deep Learning-enhanced Block-Diagram Modeling of Solar Power Systems

Data-driven models of power system inverter-based resources are desired to run simulations faster than with detailed electromagnetic transient models, to hide proprietary design details, to support control system design applications, and to aggregate the effects of distributed energy resources. This paper applies a customized Hammerstein Wiener framework to train block diagram models from thousands of electromagnetic transient simulations or experimental test records. The block diagram models integrate with larger grid simulations as voltagecontrolled current sources or current-controlled voltage sources for several simulators. Guidelines for block architecture and training are presented. Three-phase balanced, three-phase unbalanced, and single-phase examples all achieve an acceptable root mean square error of no more than 0.05 per-unit.

Design Guidance for High Temperature Concentrating Solar Power Components

This report provides guidance for the design of components for concentrating power facilities operating at high temperatures and undergoing high, secondary thermal stresses relative to the applied primary pressure stress. The design rules were developed for the design of Generation 3 CSP tubular receivers manufactured from Alloy 740H, but are generally applicable to a wide range of component types undergoing similar loads. Part 1 of the report provides procedural design rules for components to be used in conjunction with the 2019 edition of the ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code. Part 2 provides corresponding design data for Alloy 740H. Part 3 of the report is a commentary describing the rationale behind the design rules and the data underlying the design material properties. Finally, Part 4 provides an extensive set of worked sample problems detailing the application of the rules to CSP components.

Heliotrope: A Solar Powered Hot Air Balloon Flight System

What it is: A roughly spherical balloon constructed from light duty painter's plastic (0.31 mil high density polyethylene) and darkened with air float charcoal powder. Balloons typically range from 12-40 ft across depending on mission needs. How it works: Sunlight shines on the balloon, heating the air inside. The density difference due to the hot air in the balloon is sufficient to lift it up to 80,000 ft in the air

Design Consideration for Solar Powered Wastewater Treatment Facility for Agriculture and Potable Usage on Acoma Pueblo Reservation

Environmental stewardship has long been a guiding principle among indigenous peoples. Acoma Pueblo, located approximately 45 miles west of Albuquerque, New Mexico, shares these values. They are exploring how to incorporate these values into future development projects. As such, Acoma recently created a wastewater treatment facility to provide irrigation water to nearby crops. Treatment facilities like this further sustainable practices and benefit the community but may draw power from the grid. This report looks at design considerations for possible photovoltaic utilization at the site to offset current power and monetary costs. Lessons learned from a larger, municipal wastewater treatment center will be applied with special considerations for Acoma Pueblo's values and unique wastewater treatment facility configuration.
