A Rapid Sequence of Solar Energetic Particle Events Associated with a Series of Extreme-ultraviolet Jets: Solar Orbiter, STEREO-A, and Near-Earth Spacecraft Observations

A series of solar energetic electron (SEE) events was observed from 2022 November 9 to November 15 by Solar Orbiter, STEREO-A, and near-Earth spacecraft. At least 32 SEE intensity enhancements at energies >10 keV were clearly distinguishable in Solar Orbiter particle data, with 13 of them occurring on November 11. Several of these events were accompanied by 10 MeV proton and 2MeV nucleon−1 heavy-ion intensity enhancements. By combining remote-sensing and in situ data from the three viewpoints (Solar Orbiter and STEREO-A were ∼20° and ∼15° east of Earth, respectively), we determine that the origin of this rapid succession of events was a series of brightenings and jetlike eruptions detected in extreme ultraviolet (EUV) observations from the vicinity of two active regions. We find a close association between these EUV phenomena, the occurrence of hard X-ray flares, type III radio bursts, and the release of SEEs. For the most intense events, usually associated with extended EUV jets, the distance between the site of these solar eruptions and the estimated magnetic connectivity regions of each spacecraft with the Sun did not prevent the arrival of electrons at the three locations. The capability of jets to drive coronal fronts does not necessarily imply the observation of an SEE event. Two peculiar SEE events on November 9 and 14, observed only at electron energies 50 keV but rich in 1MeV nucleon−1 heavy ions, originated from slow-rising confined EUV emissions, for which the process resulting in energetic particle release to interplanetary space is unclear.

Characterization of Stereo Vision Performance for Roving at the Lunar Poles

Surface rover operations at the polar regions of airless bodies, particularly the Moon, are of particular interest to future NASA science missions such as Resource Prospector (RP). Polar optical conditions present challenges to conventional imaging techniques, with repercussions to driving, safeguarding and science. High dynamic range, long cast shadows, opposition and white out conditions are all significant factors in appearance. RP is currently undertaking an effort to characterize stereo vision performance in polar conditions through physical laboratory experimentation with regolith simulants, obstacle distributions and oblique lighting.

An Autonomous sUAS Operating in UTM TCL4+ and STEReO Fire Scenario

This study presents a sUAS payload point design that enables autonomous BVLOS flightin UTM TCL4+ urban environments and STEReO fire responses. The payload components include an onboard computer, 360 deg LIDAR, range finder altimeter, downward-facing monocular camera, forward-facing thermal and visible light dual camera, vehicle-to-vehicle radio modem, and Li-ion smart battery. The components are mounted on an enclosed structural frame that was designed in-house. Placing the autonomy components onboard leverages the advantages of sUAS over manned aircraft such as low-cost, quick response time, and increased scalability. Autonomous capabilities include object and fire detection, V2V communication, embedded processing, and SLAM. Data processing is conducted on-board the aircraft to eliminate the dependency on a ground station downlink. The payload is evaluated in both software simulation as well as flight tests.

Towards An Autonomous sUAS Operating in UTM TCL4+ and STEReO Fire Scenario

This study presents two sUAS payload point designs for enabling autonomous BVLOS flight in UTM TCL4+ urban environments and STEReO fire responses. The payload components for the first payload include an onboard computer and a 360 LIDAR. The second payload, which is a continuation of the first, adds a range finder altimeter, downward-facing monocular camera, forward-facing thermal and visible light dual camera, vehicle-to-vehicle radio modem, and Li-ion smart battery. The components are mounted on enclosed structural frames that were designed in-house. Placing the autonomy components onboard leverages the advantages of sUAS over manned aircraft such as low-cost, quick response time, and increased scalability. Autonomous capabilities include embedded processing, SLAM, object and fire detection, and V2V communication. Data processing is conducted onboard the aircraft to eliminate the dependency on a groundstation downlink. The first iteration of the payload is tested in both simulation and flight tests while the continuing iteration is in development.

Understanding Solar Energetic Particles With STEREO HET

The project evaluates solar energetic particles (SEPs) in the Heliosphere utilizing in situ data from the STEREO mission. More specifically, raw data from the High Energy Telescope (HET) corresponding to the abundances and energy spectra of electrons, protons, He, and heavier nuclei was extracted. C codes were modified and written to analyze Pulse heights and fluxes in a readable format. Plots of the data were formulated in Python. Low fluxes of heavier elements prompted a revaluation of the onboard binning process. New selection criteria will be generated to orient the particle energy loss in the detectors with the expected locations of the energy tracks corresponding to each element.

Initial Exploration of STEReO (Scalable Traffic management for Emergency Response Operations) system user requirements for safe integration of small UAS

Environment-based disasters, such as wildfire, can cause substantial loss of life and loss of property and are costing billions of dollars annually. Existing disaster response operations are complex, with many challenges. The aim of the Scalable Traffic management for Emergency Response Operations (STEReO) system is to demonstrate the application of technologies that will enable small, low-altitude Unmanned Aerial System operations to safely take place in the airspace above a disaster event, increasing the effectiveness of the response. As a first step, the project aims to build a small prototype to demonstrate and test the core functions of this system based on user needs and requirements that were gathered from experts in the field during discussions and walkthroughs.

Stereo-vision thermal imaging system for tracking flying animals in wind farm areas (CRADA #763) Abstract

CRADA 763: abstract ThermalTracker-3D (TT3D) is a stereo vision thermal imaging system that provides 3D flight information on detected birds, bats, and other flying targets. The system was initially developed for use in the siting and monitoring of offshore wind projects to establish pre-construction and operation collision risk data but can be applied to terrestrial wind energy projects as well as national security monitoring. This technology will reduce monitoring cost, decrease processing time, and provide more accurate data for wind energy developers/operators and regulatory agencies. While the current technology is at a high level of readiness, Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 7, there remain several barriers to commercialization, particularly around ease-of-use, that result in a low Adoption Readiness Level (ARL). The proposed work will advance commercialization readiness by streamlining calibration methods for built systems. This work will:1. 1. develop a software package for factory and dynamic calibration processes 2. test that package with existing prototype TT3D systems, and 3. conduct outreach with industry end-users.
