BPS and near-BPS black holes in AdS 5 and their spectrum in $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 SYM

We study quantum corrections in the gravitational path integral around nearly 1/16-BPS black holes in asymptotically AdS 5 × S 5 space, dual to heavy states in 4D N = 4 super Yang-Mills. The analysis provides a gravitational explanation of why 1/16-BPS black holes exhibit an exact degeneracy at large N and why all such states have the same charges, confirming the belief that the superconformal index precisely counts the entropy of extremal black holes. We show the presence of a gap of order N −2 between the 1/16-BPS black holes and the lightest near-BPS black holes within the same charge sector. This is the first example of such a gap for black hole states within the context of AdS 5 holography. We also derive the spectrum of near-BPS states that lie above this gap. Our computation relies on finding the correct version of the N = 2 super-Schwarzian theory which captures the breaking of the SU(1, 1|1) symmetry when the black hole has finite temperature and non-zero chemical potential. Finally, we comment on possible stringy and non-perturbative corrections that can affect the black hole spectrum.

Elliptical and purely $\mathrm{NS}$ superstrata

We analyze the BPS equations in the “superstratum sector” of three-dimensional gauged supergravity. We obtain multi-parameter supersymmetric solutions that include elliptical deformations of the supertubes that underlie standard superstrata. We uplift the three-dimensional solutions to obtain the corresponding six-dimensional geometries. This yields new families of elliptically-deformed, ambi-bolar hyper-Kahler geometries in four dimensions with a non-tri-holomorphic U(1) isometry. We also find a new family of scaling superstrata whose S-dual lives entirely within the NS-sector of supergravity, and will thus be more amenable to exact analysis using string probes. In all these new superstrata, including the scaling ones, if the momentum charge is non-zero we find that the ellipse stays away from the degeneration locus in which the ellipse becomes flat.

Gravitational index of the heterotic string

The fundamental heterotic string has a tower of BPS states whose supersymmetric index has an exponential growth in the charges. We construct the saddle-point of the gravitational path integral corresponding to this index. The saddle-point configuration is a supersymmetric rotating non-extremal Euclidean black hole. This configuration is singular in the two-derivative theory. We show that the addition of higher-derivative terms in four-dimensional N = 2 supergravity resolves the singularity. In doing so, we extend the recently-developed “new attractor mechanism” to include the effect of higher-derivative terms. Remarkably, the one-loop, four-derivative F-term contribution to the prepotential leads to a precise match of the gravitational and microscopic index. We also comment, using the effective theory near the horizon, on the possibility of a string-size near-extremal black hole. Our results clarify the meaning of different descriptions of this system in the literature. The thermal state transitions to a winding condensate and a gas of strings without ever reaching a small black hole, while the index is captured by the rotating Euclidean black hole solution and is constant and thus smoothly connected to the microscopic ensemble.

Q-balls meet fuzzballs: non-BPS microstate geometries

We construct a three-parameter family of non-extremal microstate geometries, or “microstrata”, that are dual to states and deformations of the D1-D5 CFT. These families are non-extremal analogues of superstrata. We find these microstrata by using a Q-ball-inspired Ansatz that reduces the equations of motion to solving for eleven functions of one variable. We then solve this system both perturbatively and numerically and the results match extremely well. We find that the solutions have normal mode frequencies that depend upon the amplitudes of the excitations. We also show that, at higher order in perturbations, some of the solutions, having started with normalizable modes, develop a “non-normalizable” part, suggesting that the microstrata represent states in a perturbed form of the D1-D5 CFT. This paper is intended as a “Proof of Concept” for the Q-ball-inspired approach, and we will describe how it opens the way to many interesting follow-up calculations both in supergravity and in the dual holographic field theory.

Cosmic filaments from cosmic strings

Cosmic strings are generically predicted in many extensions of the Standard Model of particle physics. In this work, we propose a new avenue for detecting cosmic strings through their effect on the filamentary structure in the cosmic web. Using cosmological simulations of the density wake from a cosmic string, we examine a variety of filament structure probes. We show that the largest effect of the cosmic string is an overdensity in the filament distribution around the string wake. The signal from the overdensity is stronger at higher redshift and more robust with a wider field. We analyze the spatial distribution of filaments from a publicly available catalog of filaments built from Sloan digital sky survey galaxies. With existing data, we find no evidence for the presence of a cosmic string wake with string tension parameter $\textit{Gμ}$ above 5 × 10 –6 . However, we project WFIRST will be able to detect a signal from such a wake at the 99% confidence level at redshift $\textit{z}$ = 2, with significantly higher confidence and the possibility of probing lower tensions ($\textit{Gμ}$ ~ 10 –6 ), at $\textit{z}$ = 10. The sensitivity of this method is not competitive with constraints derived from the cosmic microwave background. However, it provides an independent discovery channel at low redshift, which could be a smoking gun in scenarios in which the cosmic microwave background bound can be weakened.

Topics in String Theory, Quantum Field Theory And Quantum Gravity

This is the final technical report for DOE Award No. DE-SC0021528 - Topics in string theory, quantum field theory and quantum gravity. The goals of the research program were in three areas - understanding quantum gravity and the internal description of quantum systems using the gauge/gravity correspondence, aspects of entanglement in eld theory, gravity and string theory, and the characterization of the behavior of strongly interacting quantum eld theories. The primary results were on the microscopic understanding of the ER=EPR correspondence as a string duality, and on a matrix model description of the addition of end of the world branes and propagating matter to two dimensional Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity. The former led to the completion of the work shortly after the end of the reporting period and continuing work investigating the properties of the associated stringy black hole microstates. The latter led to the work, which also appeared shortly after the end of the reporting period, and a continuing project to nd a matrix model formulation of the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis and JT gravity with propagating matter.

PlasmoData.jl — A Julia framework for modeling and analyzing complex data as graphs

Datasets encountered in scientific and engineering applications appear in complex formats (e.g., images, multivariate time series, molecules, video, text strings, networks). Graph theory provides a unifying framework to model such datasets and enables the use of powerful tools that can help analyze, visualize, and extract value from data. In this work, we present PlasmoData.jl, an open-source, Julia framework that uses concepts of graph theory to facilitate the modeling and analysis of complex datasets. The core of our framework is a general data modeling abstraction, which we call a DataGraph. We show how the abstraction and software implementation can be used to represent diverse data objects as graphs and to enable the use of tools from topology, graph theory, and machine learning (e.g., graph neural networks) to conduct a variety of tasks. We illustrate the versatility of the framework by using real datasets: (i) an image classification problem using topological data analysis to extract features from the graph model to train machine learning models; (ii) a disease outbreak problem where we model multivariate time series as graphs to detect abnormal events; and (iii) a technology pathway analysis problem where we highlight how we can use graphs to navigate connectivity. Further, our discussion also highlights how PlasmoData.jl leverages native Julia capabilities to enable compact syntax, scalable computations, and interfaces with diverse packages. Overall, we show that the DataGraph abstraction and PlasmoData.jl Julia package are able to model data within graphs and enable useful analysis.

NS5-brane backgrounds and coset CFT partition functions

Worldsheet string theory is solvable for a variety of backgrounds involving Neveu-Schwarz fivebranes, in terms of gauged nonlinear sigma models on group manifolds. We compute the worldsheet torus partition function of these models, and propose gauging of null isometries as a unifying principle and conceptual framework for this large family of string backgrounds. In the process, we explain how partition functions of asymmetrically gauged Wess-Zumino-Witten models can be computed from the path integral, and organize and systematize various results scattered throughout the literature.

ZZ instantons and the non-perturbative dual of $c$ = 1 string theory

We study the effect of ZZ instantons in c = 1 string theory, and demonstrate that they give rise to non-perturbative corrections to scattering amplitudes that do not saturate unitarity within the closed string sector. Beyond the leading non-perturbative order, logarithmic divergences are canceled between worldsheet diagrams of different topologies, due to the Fischler-Susskind-Polchinski mechanism. We propose that the closed string vacuum in c = 1 string theory is non-perturbatively dual to a state of the matrix quantum mechanics in which all scattering states up to a given energy with no incoming flux from the “other side” of the potential are occupied by free fermions. Under such a proposal, we find detailed agreement of non-perturbative corrections to closed string amplitudes in the worldsheet description and in the dual matrix model.

Equivariant Graph Attention Network - 3D Conformers & Feature Fusion

EGAN-3F (Equivariant Graph Attention Network - 3D Conformers & Feature Fusion) presents an innovative approach for predicting binding affinity between small molecules and protein targets, a fundamental task in drug discovery. Traditional structure-based methods often depend on protein-ligand complex structures obtained from crystallography or molecular docking. In contrast, ligand-only machine learning models using 1D or 2D representations such as SMILES have been developed to predict binding affinity without structural information about the target; however, their accuracy is often limited due to the lack of 3D ligand information. EGAN-3F addresses this limitation by integrating spatially aware graph learning with traditional descriptor-based features. We systematically investigate how combining 2D and 3D molecular representations enhances binding affinity prediction from SMILES strings. This approach underscores the importance of modeling conformational diversity and incorporating chemically meaningful descriptors to improve predictive accuracy. The key innovation of EGAN-3F lies in its ability to achieve robust ligand-based binding affinity predictions without requiring protein-ligand complex structures, effectively bridging the gap between purely structural and ligand-only modeling paradigms.

Open string stub as an auxiliary string field

Witten’s open string field theory with a generalized version of stubs is reformulated as a cubic string field theory using an auxiliary string field. The gauge symmetries and equations of motion as well as the associative algebra of the resulting theory are investigated. Integrating out either the original or auxiliary field is shown to recover the conventional cubic theory. Our analysis demonstrates that deformations due to the stubs can be described as a homotopy transfer purely in the context of strong deformation retract. We also discuss to what extent the vertex regions resulting from stubs provide a model for the elementary interactions of closed string field theory.

Massive islands

We comment on the role of the graviton mass in recent calculations of the Page curve using holographic ideas. All reliable calculations of the Page curve in more than 2+1 spacetime dimensions have been performed in systems with massive gravitons. A crucial ingredient in these calculations is the formation of islands, regions that contribute to the entropy of degrees of freedom located elsewhere. While most often simply ignored, it is indeed true that mass of the graviton does not appear to significantly affect the calculations that appeared in the literature. We use the freedom to change the graviton mass to give an extremely simple model of analytically tractable island formation in general dimensions. We do however note that if one attempts to take the limit of zero graviton mass, any contribution from the islands disappears. This raises the question to what extent entanglement islands can play a role in standard massless gravity.

Gravitational waves from global cosmic strings and cosmic archaeology

Global cosmic strings are predicted in many motivated extensions to the Standard Model of particle physics, with close connections to axion dark matter physics. Recent studies suggest that, although subdominant relative to Goldstone emission, gravitational wave (GW) signals from global strings can be detectable with current and planned GW detectors such as LIGO, LISA, DECIGO/BBO, ET/CE and AEDGE/AION, as well as pulsar timing arrays such as PPTA, NANOGrav and SKA. This work is an extensive, updated study on GWs from a global cosmic string network, taking into account of the most recent developments related to the subject. The main analysis is based on the analytical Velocity-dependent One-Scale (VOS) model calibrated with recent simulation results, which provides a generic protocol for such calculations with details given. We also demonstrate how the GW signal can be influenced with variations to the baseline model: this includes considering the uncertainties of model parameters and the potential deviation from the conventional VOS model prediction (i.e. the scaling behavior) as suggested by some of the recent simulation results. Furthermore, we investigated in detail the effect of a non-standard cosmology (e.g. early matter domination or kination) or new particle species on the GW signals from global strings. We demonstrate that the frequency spectrum of GW background from global cosmic strings can be used to probe the cosmic history prior to the Big Bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) (i.e. the primordial dark age) up to a temperature of T ~ 10 8 GeV.

Consistent truncations in higher derivative supergravity

We consider the torus reduction of heterotic supergravity in the presence of four-derivative corrections. In particular, the reduction on T n generically leads to a half-maximal supergravity coupled to n vector multiplets, and we show that it is consistent to truncate out said vector multiplets. This is done by the analysis of both the bosonic equations of motion and the Killing spinor equations. As an application of the consistent truncation, we examine the four-derivative corrected BPS black string that reduces to a black hole in minimal nine-dimensional supergravity.

A duality in string theory on AdS 3

We consider bosonic string theory on AdS 3 supported by Kalb-Ramond flux. It is well known that the α' exact worldsheet theory is described by the SL(2,R) WZW model. In this note we perform checks of an α' exact dual description proposed in [arXiv:2104.07233] involving a winding condensate on a free theory background. We give the explicit map of vertex operators for normalizable states on both sides of the duality and demonstrate the equivalence of their two and three point functions by direct computation. The duality is of strong-weak nature in α' .

Graph-Based Approaches for Predicting Solvation Energy in Multiple Solvents: Open Datasets and Machine Learning Models

The solvation properties of molecules, often estimated using quantum chemical simulations, are important in the synthesis of energy storage materials, drugs, and industrial chemicals. Here, we develop machine learning models of solvation energies to replace expensive quantum chemistry calculations with inexpensive-to-compute message-passing neural network models that require only the molecular graph as inputs. Our models are trained on a new database of solvation energies for 130,258 molecules taken from the QM9 dataset computed in five solvents (acetone, ethanol, acetonitrile, dimethyl sulfoxide, and water) via an implicit solvent model. Our best model achieves a mean absolute error of 0.5 kcal/mol for molecules with nine or fewer non-hydrogen atoms and 1 kcal/mol for molecules with between 10 and 14 non-hydrogen atoms. We make the entire dataset of 651,290 computed entries openly available and provide simple web and programmatic interfaces to enable others to run our solvation energy model on new molecules. This model calculates the solvation energies for molecules using only the SMILES string and also provides an estimate of whether each molecule is within the domain of applicability of our model. We envision that the dataset and models will provide the functionality needed for the rapid screening of large chemical spaces to discover improved molecules for many applications.

Comments on axions, domain walls, and cosmic strings

Axions have for some time been considered a plausible candidate for dark matter. They can be produced through misalignment, but it has been argued that when inflation occurs before a Peccei-Quinn transition, appreciable production can result from cosmic strings. This has been the subject of extensive simulations. But there are reasons to be skeptical about the possible role of axion strings. Here, we review and elaborate on these questions, and argue that parametrically strings are already accounted for by the assumption of random misalignment angles. We review and elaborate on these questions, and provide several qualitative arguments that parametrically strings are already accounted for by the assumption of random misalignment angles. The arguments are base on considerations of the collective modes of the string solutions, on computations of axion radiation in particular models, and reviews of simulations.
