Propulsion System Design using a Dual 3-Phase PM Synchronous Reluctance Machine with X-Type Multi-Level GaN Inverter

— A propulsion system design is exhibited here that comprises of an X-type GaN power module based dual multi-level inverter and a PM Synchronous Reluctance motor. With the critical benefits of multi-level operation, namely low common mode EMI noise, low switching loss, low current Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), smoother torque and lower iron loss, this topology targets high system-level efficiency and high power density while using reduced rare earth (RE) elements in its motor. General Motors and Purdue University jointly designed and developed this 800V class, highly scalable traction drive that can deliver 200+ kW of power suitable for C-SUV to truck vehicle class. The 3-phase electric machine design utilizes dual winding with 6 terminals to work in line with the GaN X-type inverter, and results in a tractive solution that ensures higher machine efficiency while reducing cost and uncertainty related to use and availability of heavy rare earth/rare earth elements in its rotor.

High precision real-time insertion device and monochromator synchronization at NSLS-II

We report that insertion devices have become the dominant photon source at synchrotron and free electron laser light source facilities the world over. Undulators, characterized by their small deflection parameter, exhibit a high degree of constructive interference in photon production from high energy charged particle beams leading to very high photon rates at specific harmonics of the fundamental frequency with relatively narrow spectral widths. Spectroscopic measurements of interest typically span several of these harmonic widths, which requires precision adjustment of an undulator’s magnetic gap to maintain peak flux within the much narrower bandwidth of a beamline monochromator at the desired energy. High precision insertion device controls are developed at NSLS-II including real-time linked control of monochromator hardware allowing for fast, high precision, hardware triggered, spectroscopic measurements. Furthermore, this fast fly scan method is described, compared statistically for self consistency, and shown to be far superior in both efficiency and accuracy as compared to standard step scan measurements.

Shunt-Connected FACTS and Synchronous Condensers

In recent years, the electric-transmission system has undergone a significant transformation marked by a greater integration of renewable-energy sources like wind and solar, the phasing out of thermal generation plants, and a concerted effort towards electrifying energy consumption. To keep pace with the integration of renewable-energy sources and the escalating demands of industries and households, it is imperative to expand and modernize the existing power infrastructure. These upgrades are essential to maintain grid stability, enhance power delivery, and boost overall efficiency of the system. However, challenges have emerged with the growing complexity of power grids, particularly in the realms of voltage control, transient stability, and power-quality management.

Grid-Connected Self-Synchronous Cascaded H-Bridge Inverters with Autonomous Power Sharing: Preprint

Cascaded inverters are widely applied in applications where elevated ac voltages are required while using semiconductor devices with lower voltage ratings. Here, we focus on structures that require localized power transfer between low-voltage sources/loads dispersed across inverter dc links and the inverter ac-sides are series-connected across a three-phase medium-voltage ac grid. To date, decentralized controllers that allow for bi-directional power transfer in such systems are limited. To fill this gap, we propose a virtual oscillator controller which modulates the power processed by each inverter in a purely decentralized manner.

Low synchronization Gram–Schmidt and generalized minimal residual algorithms

The Gram–Schmidt process uses orthogonal projection to construct the A = QR factorization of a matrix. When Q has linearly independent columns, the operator P = I - Q(QTQ)-1QT defines an orthogonal projection onto Q⊥. In finite precision, Q loses orthogonality as the factorization progresses. A family of approximate projections is derived with the form P = I - QTQT, with correction matrix T. When T = (QTQ)-1, and T is triangular, it is postulated that the best achievable orthogonality is $\mathcal{O}(ε)\mathcal{K}(A)$. We present new variants of modified (MGS) and classical Gram–Schmidt algorithms that require one global reduction step. An interesting form of the projector leads to a compact WY representation for MGS. In particular, the inverse compact WY MGS algorithm is equivalent to a lower triangular solve. Our main contribution is to introduce a backward normalization lag into the compact WY representation, resulting in a $\mathcal{O}(ε)\mathcal{K}[r_0, AV_m])$ stable Generalized Minimal Residual Method (GMRES) algorithm that requires only one global reduce per iteration. Finally, further improvements in performance are achieved by accelerating GMRES on GPUs.

Dynamic beam shaping—Improving laser materials processing via feature synchronous energy coupling

Today, tailored laser beams are rarely used and thus an opportunity to optimize existing or introduce new processes is missed. New methods of dynamic beam shaping have the potential to change that in future. This keynote paper deals with methods allowing a transient energy input into the workpiece at such time scales that the underlying interaction processes are guided towards the desired result. It shows principles, categorizes necessary system technology, and gives application examples to familiarize the reader with the topic. It postulates that time-scale-dependent coupling between transient energy input and addressed process features is key for achieving the optimum.

Extended real-time voltage instability identification method based on synchronized phasor measurements

This paper presents an extended adaptive approach designed to accurately estimate the Thévenin equivalent parameters using phasor measurements at a given bus for measurements lying in any of four quadrants of the PQ-plane. The improvement is achieved by using a new condition to properly update the estimated parameters after an initial guess. Based on an adaptive philosophy, the proposed approach can correctly account for the intrinsic nonlinearities of a power system, can provide a real-time estimation of Thévenin parameters, and does not require network topology knowledge. The method is validated using the Kundur 2-area system, showing estimation improvements compared to the current adaptive approach and the classical recursive least-squares method. The proposed approach is able to estimate both sides of the system with respect to the measurement bus. In addition, a data-driven voltage stability index is developed. To illustrate the performance of the proposed approach in a larger power system, a voltage stability assessment is carried out on the IEEE 39-bus system, considering the action of overexcitation limiters of generators and nonlinear loads. The proposed approach is suitable for applications that require an accurate Thévenin equivalent estimation in real-time, such as for voltage stability assessment. The new approach provides a reliable tool for the system operators to make proper and timely decisions.
