Terahertz EPR spectroscopy using a 36-tesla high-homogeneity series-connected hybrid magnet

Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) is a powerful technique to study materials and biological samples on an atomic scale. High-field EPR in particular enables extracting very small g-anisotropies in organic radicals and half-filled 3d and 4f metal ions such as Mn II (3d 5 ) or Gd III (4f 7 ), and resolving EPR signals from unpaired spins with very close g-values, both of which provide high-resolution details of the local atomic environment. Before the recent commissioning of the high-homogeneity Series Connected Hybrid magnet (SCH, superconducting + resistive) at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL), the highest-field, high-resolution EPR spectrometer available was limited to 25 T using a purely resistive “Keck” magnet at the NHMFL. Herein, we report the first EPR experiments performed using the SCH magnet capable of reaching the field of 36 T, corresponding to an EPR frequency of 1 THz for g = 2. The magnet’s intrinsic homogeneity (25 ppm, that is 0.9 mT at 36 T over 1 cm diameter, 1 cm length cylinder) was previously established by NMR. We characterized the magnet’s temporal stability (5 ppm, which is 0.2 mT at 36 T over one-minute, the typical acquisition time) using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). This high resolution enables resolving the weak g-anisotropy of 1,3-bis(diphenylene)-2-phenylallyl (BDPA), Δg = 2.5 × 10 –4 obtained from measurements at 932 GHz and 33 T. Subsequently, we recorded EPR spectra at multiple frequencies for two Gd III complexes with potential applications as spin labels. In conclusion, we demonstrated a significant reduction in line broadening in Gd[DTPA], attributed to second order zero field splitting, and a resolution enhancement of g-tensor anisotropy for Gd[sTPATCN]-SL.

Terahertz Dirac Hyperbolic Metamaterial

Hyperbolic metamaterials (HMMs) are engineered materials with a hyperbolic isofrequency surface, enabling a range of interesting phenomena and applications including negative refraction, enhanced sensing, and subdiffraction imaging, focusing, and waveguiding. Existing HMMs primarily work in the visible and infrared spectral range due to the inherent properties of their constituent materials. Here, we demonstrate a THz-range Dirac HMM using topological insulators as the building blocks. Here, we find that the structure houses up to three high-wavevector volume plasmon polariton (VPP) modes, consistent with transfer matrix modeling and effective medium theory calculations. The VPPs have mode indices greater than 100, significantly larger than observed for VPP modes in HMMs made from metals or doped semiconductors while maintaining comparable quality factors. We attribute these properties to the two-dimensional Dirac nature of the electrons occupying the topological insulator surface states. Because these are van der Waals materials, these structures can be grown at a wafer-scale on a variety of substrates, allowing them to be integrated with existing THz structures and enabling next-generation THz optical devices.

Non-invasive measurement of leaf water content and pressure–volume curves using terahertz radiation

In this paper we describe a non-invasive method of measuring leaf water content using THz radiation and combine this with psychrometry for determination of leaf pressure–volume relationships. In contrast to prior investigations using THz radiation to measure plant water status, the reported method exploits the differential absorption characteristic of THz radiation at multiple frequencies within plant leaves to determine absolute water content in real-time. By combining the THz system with a psychrometer, pressure–volume curves were generated in a completely automated fashion for the determination of leaf tissue water relations parameters including water potential at turgor loss, osmotic potential at full turgor and the relative water content at the turgor loss point. This novel methodology provides for repeated, non-destructive measurement of leaf water content and greatly increased efficiency in generation of leaf PV curves by reducing user handling time.

Dephasingless two-color terahertz generation

A laser pulse composed of a fundamental and an appropriately phased second harmonic can drive a time-dependent current of photoionized electrons that generates broadband THz radiation. Over the propagation distances relevant to many experiments, dispersion causes the relative phase between the harmonics to evolve. This “dephasing” slows the accumulation of THz energy and results in a multi-cycle THz pulse with significant angular dispersion. Here, we introduce a novel optical configuration that compensates the relative phase evolution, allowing for the formation of a half-cycle THz pulse with almost no angular dispersion. The configuration uses the spherical aberration of an axilens to map a prescribed radial phase variation in the near field to a desired longitudinal phase variation in the far field. Simulations that combine this configuration with an ultrashort flying focus demonstrate the formation of a half-cycle THz pulse with a controlled emission angle and 1/4 the angular divergence of the multi-cycle pulse created by a conventional optical configuration.

Magnetic terahertz resonances above the Néel temperature in the frustrated kagome antiferromagnet averievite

Time-domain magneto-THz spectroscopy is utilized to study the frustrated magnet averievite Cu 5–x Zn x V 2 O 10 (CsCl). Pronounced THz resonances are observed in unsubstituted samples (x = 0) when cooling below the onset of short-range magnetic correlations. The influence of external magnetic effects confirms the magnetic origin of these resonances. Increasing Zn substitution suppresses the resonances, as frustration effects dominate, reflecting the nonmagnetic phases for x > 0.25 compounds. The temperature evolution of the THz spectra is complemented with electron spin resonance spectroscopy. This comparison allows a direct probe of the different contributions from magnetic order, frustration, and structural properties in the phase diagram of averievite. Furthermore, our results illustrate the effect of magnetic interactions in THz spectra of frustrated magnets.

Observation of cupratelike nonlinear terahertz responses in superconducting infinite-layer nickelates via two-dimensional coherent spectroscopy

The 𝑑-wave pairing symmetry in newly discovered infinite-layer nickelates remains highly debated compared to the widely accepted 𝑑-wave superconductivity in cuprates, despite recent intense efforts using equilibrium optical and electrical transport measurements. A complementary approach involves characterizing THz coherent nonlinear responses, which is currently lacking but needed, as it would offer new insights into the superconducting gap structure by characterizing Higgs modes and quasiparticle excitations. Here, in this study, we report THz 2D coherent spectroscopy (THz-2DCS) responses from the superconducting state in an infinite-layer nickelate. The 2D spectra clearly demonstrate the absence of hallmark signatures of 𝑠-wave pairing symmetry, such as resonant 2⁢Δ peaks at superconducting gaps. Instead, we observe gapless 2D spectra in the nickelate, centered around the THz driving frequency, with no noticeable shift as the temperature increases. These findings closely resemble the nodal superconductivity behavior expected in cuprates. Together with our simulations, these findings suggest that 2⁢Δ signatures in the 2D spectra of 𝑑-wave gap structures can be obscured by significant nodal quasiparticle excitations at arbitrarily low energies. This contrasts with the long-lived Higgs modes, observed as distinct 2⁢Δ peaks in a controlled THz-2DCS experiment on niobium, a representative example of dirty-limit s-wave superconductors. Our results have implications for understanding the unconventional superconductivity in nickelates and highlight the need to explore their coherent nonlinear dynamics.

Optical Spectrometer With a Pulse-to-Pulse Resolution for Terahertz and mm-Wave Signals

The development of ultra-compact particle accelerators and accelerator-based high-power THz generators are some of the top priorities for research and development programs around the world. These tools require the development of accelerating structures, operating in the mm-Wave and THz range, where diagnostics are not available or are insufficient. This article presents the design of a pulse-to-pulse THz spectrometer, primarily developed for diagnostics of accelerating structures and THz radiation sources. In particular, this spectrometer can be used to detect RF pulse shortening caused by vacuum breakdown and beam misalignment in THz accelerators, as well as for bunch length monitoring and radiation source diagnostics. The spectrometer is based on a diffraction grating and is capable of covering a frequency range where RF-based breakdown measurements are not possible. We have built and tested the first prototype with different sources in a frequency range of 0.1-1.0 THz. In this article, we present the physical design, supported numerical simulations, electronics development, and test results.

Numerical simulation of terahertz radiation by laser-driven plasma dipole oscillation

Laser-plasma interactions have many theoretical and technological applications. One is the use of coherently accelerated electrons to provide novel sources of THz radiation. Our research focuses on simulating the cross/self-interactions between two high intensity, ultra-short, counter propagating and detuned laser pulses and an initial neutral target for controlled ionization. Unlike our previous studies of laser-matter interaction over preformed plasma, we explore the injection and collision of laser pulses to induce background plasma driven by the self-guided laser wakefield mechanism, which is then used to perturb the plasma resulting in induced dipole oscillations leading to transverse radiation. Inducing a cylindrical spatial plasma column within the laser beam radius regime provides a stable, spatially localized plasma channel. The emitted radiation from the plasma dipole oscillation (PDO) will not be affected by surrounding plasma absorption, resulting in effective radiation distribution. Finally, results include 3D EM-PIC simulations and a comparison of the self- ionizing plasma against the preformed plasma to assess the efficiency of the mechanisms.
