Reactive co-sputtering of ternary Au–Ta–O films with tunable electrical resistivity

Heavy-metal-based films with high electrical resistivity are needed for hohlraums for magnetically-assisted inertial confinement fusion. Here, we study ternary Au-Ta-O films deposited by reactive direct-current magnetron co-sputtering from elemental Au and Ta targets in an oxygen containing atmosphere. By varying O content, the electrical resistivity of films can be tuned in a wide range of ~ 100 - 40,000 μΩ cm. With increasing O content, a drastic increase in resistivity occurs at ~ 45 at.% of O, separating regimes with two different dominant conduction mechanisms attributed to metallic conduction through the Au-Ta alloy matrix (for ≲ 45 at.% of O) and tunneling across insulating Ta 2 O 5 layers separating conducting islands (for ≳ 45 at.% of O). Post-deposition annealing at 300 °C leads to the segregation of Au into ~ 50-nm islands, sharply decreasing the resistivity for films with ≳ 45 at.% of O but not for the metal-like films with lower O content.

Coarsening dynamics of ternary polymer solutions with mobility and viscosity contrasts

Using phase-field simulations, we investigate the bulk coarsening dynamics of ternary polymer solutions undergoing a glass transition for two models of phase separation: diffusion only and with hydrodynamics. The glass transition is incorporated in both models by imposing mobility and viscosity contrasts between the polymer-rich and polymer-poor phases of the evolving microstructure. For microstructures composed of polymer-poor clusters in a polymer-rich matrix, the mobility and viscosity contrasts significantly hinder coarsening, effectively leading to structural arrest. For microstructures composed of polymer-rich clusters in a polymer-poor matrix, the mobility and viscosity contrasts do not impede domain growth; rather, they change the transient concentration of the polymer-rich phase, altering the shape of the discrete domains. This effect introduces several complexities to the coarsening process, including percolation inversion of the polymer-rich and polymer-poor phases—a phenomenon normally attributed to viscoelastic phase separation.

Machine learning assisted search for Fe–Co–C ternary compounds with high magnetic anisotropy

We employ a machine learning (ML)-guided framework to explore rare earth free magnetic materials, specifically focusing on Fe–Co–C ternary compounds for potential use in permanent magnets. Utilizing a specifically trained crystal graph convolutional neural network model, we efficiently screen a vast space of nearly a million substitutional structures to select 620 promising structures for further investigation by first-principles calculation. We predict five low-energy metastable Fe–Co–C compounds with formation energy less than 150 meV/atom above the convex hull. These compounds exhibit high magnetization (Js > 1.0 T) and significant magnetic anisotropy (K1 > 1.0 MJ/m3), making them promising candidates for permanent magnet applications. The phonon calculations indicate these compounds are dynamically stable. Our ML-guided framework demonstrates the utility of rapidly identifying novel materials with tailored magnetic properties.

Deep reinforcement learning for predicting kinetic pathways to surface reconstruction in a ternary alloy

Abstract The majority of computational catalyst design focuses on the screening of material components and alloy composition to optimize selectivity and activity for a given reaction. However, predicting the metastability of the alloy catalyst surface at realistic operating conditions requires an extensive sampling of possible surface reconstructions and their associated kinetic pathways. We present CatGym, a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) environment for predicting the thermal surface reconstruction pathways and their associated kinetic barriers in crystalline solids under reaction conditions. The DRL agent iteratively changes the positions of atoms in the near-surface region to generate kinetic pathways to accessible local minima involving changes in the surface compositions. We showcase our agent by predicting the surface reconstruction pathways of a ternary Ni 3 Pd 3 Au 2 (111) alloy catalyst. Our results show that the DRL agent can not only explore more diverse surface compositions than the conventional minima hopping method, but also generate the kinetic surface reconstruction pathways. We further demonstrate that the kinetic pathway to a global minimum energy surface composition and its associated transition state predicted by our agent is in good agreement with the minimum energy path predicted by nudged elastic band calculations.

Anticorrelation between electron-phonon coupling strength and stability of ternary metal diborides

This paper endeavors to expand the exploration of prospective superconductivity within the 𝑃⁢6/𝑚⁢𝑚⁢𝑚−MgB 2 structural framework by substituting Mg atoms with a random selection of two distinct cations from a pool of 24 candidates. Employing a high-throughput screening methodology to scrutinize zone-center electron-phonon couplings, we found an inverse relationship between thermodynamic stability and electron-phonon coupling strength in the resulting ternary metal borides. Notably, within the MgNiB 4 system, we demonstrated that electron-phonon superconductivity is stronger in less dynamically stable configurations. Further, the qualitative reasons for the emerging instabilities when electron-phonon coupling becomes strong are discussed. This insight indicates that the quest for superior superconducting materials should concentrate on the intricate balance between electronic and phononic characteristics in structures that are on the brink of instability.

Nonequilibrium information entropy approach to ternary fission of actinides

Ternary fission of actinides probes the state of the nucleus at scission. Light clusters are produced in space and time very close to the scission point. Within the nonequilibrium statistical operator method, a generalized Gibbs distribution is constructed from the information given by the observed yields of isotopes. Using this relevant statistical operator, yields are calculated taking excited states and continuum correlations into account, in accordance with the virial expansion of the equation of state. Furthermore, clusters with mass number A≤10 are well described using the nonequilibrium generalizations of temperature and chemical potentials. Improving the virial expansion, in-medium effects may become of importance in determining the contribution of weakly bound states and continuum correlations to the intrinsic partition function. Yields of larger clusters, which fail to reach this quasiequilibrium form of the relevant distribution, are described by nucleation kinetics, and a saddle-to-scission relaxation time of about 7000 fm/c is inferred. Light-charged particle emission, described by reaction kinetics and virial expansions, may therefore be regarded as a very important tool to probe the nonequilibrium time evolution of actinide nuclei during fission.

Crystal growth and magnetic structure of ternary silicide Eu Pd 3 Si 2

The hexagonal CaCu 5 –type structure (P6/mmm) is the prototype for more than 100 ternary borides, gallides, and silicides, with general stoichiometry of RTM 3 X 2 (R=lanthanide/alkaline earth; TM=transition metal; X=B, Ga, Si, Ge). Here we report the synthesis, crystal structure, and bulk magnetic properties of polycrystalline and single crystal samples of EuPd 3 Si 2 and its nonmagnetic analog SrPd 3 Si 2 . Both compounds crystallize in the orthorhombic space group symmetry Imma (no. 74, Z = 2, oI12) displaying pseudohexagonal symmetry. Ferromagnetic (FM) order of Eu 2+ at T C1 =78K and a spin-reorientation transition at T C2 =5K appear as distinctive features in bulk magnetization, specific heat, and resistivity/resistance measurements. Neutron powder diffraction measurements on EuPd 3 Si 2 confirm FM order of the Eu 2+ spins below T C1 , with the spins aligned along the a axis below T C2 . Electronic band structure calculations corroborate the crystal structure and the FM state for EuPd 3 Si 2 , with a Pd d–band polarization in the same direction as the Eu 4f polarization, enhancing the observed spin moment.

Light element ($$Z=1,2$$) production from spontaneous ternary fission of $$^{252}$$Cf

Abstract The yields of light elements ( $$Z=1,2$$ Z = 1 , 2 ) obtained from spontaneous ternary fission of $$^{252}$$ 252 Cf are treated within a nonequilibrium approach, and the contribution of unstable nuclei and excited bound states is taken into account. These light cluster yields may be used to probe dense matter, and to infer in-medium corrections such as Pauli blocking which is determined by the nucleon density. Continuum correlations are calculated from scattering phase shifts using the Beth-Uhlenbeck formula, and the effect of medium modification is estimated. The relevant distribution is reconstructed from the measured yields of isotopes. This describes the state of the nucleon system at scission and cluster formation, using only three Lagrange parameters which are the nonequilibrium counterparts of the temperature and chemical potentials, as defined in thermodynamic equilibrium. We concluded that a simple nuclear statistical equilibrium model neglecting continuum correlations and medium effects is not able to describe the measured distribution of H and He isotopes. Moreover, the freeze-out concept may serve as an important ingredient to the nonequilibrium approach using the relevant statistical operator concept.

Simulink Modeling and Dynamic Study of Fixed-Speed, Variable-Speed, and Ternary Pumped Storage Hydropower

Pumped Storage Hydropower (PSH) is one of the most popular energy storage technologies in the world. It uses an upper reservoir to store water which can be later used during high-demand. In the United States, most of the energy storage capability actually corresponds to PSH. Moreover, PSH also brings multiple benefits to grid operation. This report presents the Simulink models of three common PSH technologies: Fixed-Speed (FS), Variable-Speed (VS), and Ternary (T)-PSH. These models are available to the general public on this GitHub repository, which contains the MATLAB model initialization files, the Simulink model files, and supplementary MATLAB code used to obtain the figures in this work. For each PSH model, an introductory description of the model components and other relevant functionalities are provided. For further information regarding the models and the initialization parameters, the reader is referred to the shared files in the repository. This report also presents the dynamic behavior of each model. The response of such models to a load event is analyzed and matched with each model's features. A custom IEEE 39 bus case is employed for the FS and T-PSH simulations, while the VS-PSH is simulated on a simplified three-bus test system due to the computational complexity of the model. For the T-PSH, the steady-state and the switching between several operating modes are also studied in this work.

Synthesis, Crystal and Electronic Structure of the New Ternary Compound Ca3InAs3

Crystals of a new ternary compound in the Ca-In-As family, Ca3InAs3, have been successfully synthesized via flux growth techniques. This is only the third known compound between the respective elements. As elucidated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction measurements, Ca3InAs3 crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pnma (No. 62, Pearson symbol oP28) with unit cell parameters a = 12.296(2) Å, b = 4.2553(7) Å, and c = 13.735(2) Å. The smallest building motifs of the structure are InAs4 tetrahedra, which are connected to one another by shared As corners, forming infinite [InAs2As2/2] chains. The latter propagate along the crystallographic b-axis. The As-In-As bond angles within the InAs4 tetrahedra deviate from the ideal 109.5° value and range from 98.12(2)° to 116.53(2)°, attesting to a small distortion from the regular tetrahedral geometry. Electronic structure calculations indicate the opening of a bandgap, consistent with the expected (Ca2+)3(In3+)(As3–)3 formula breakdown based on conventional oxidation numbers. The calculations also show that the Ca–As interactions are an intermediate between covalent and ionic, while providing evidence of strong covalent features of the In–As interactions. Weak s-p hybridization of In states was observed, supporting the experimentally found deviation of the InAs4 moiety from the ideal tetrahedral symmetry.

First-Principles Calculations of Thermoelectric Transport Properties of Quaternary and Ternary Bulk Chalcogenide Crystals

Chalcogenide crystals have a wide range of applications, especially as thermoelectric materials for energy conversion. Thermoelectric materials can be used to generate an electric current from a temperature gradient based on the Seebeck effect and based on the Peltier effect, and they can be used in cooling applications. Using first-principles calculations and semiclassical Boltzmann theory, we have computed the Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity, electronic thermal conductivity, power factor, and figure of merit of 30 chalcogenide crystals. A Quantum Espresso package is used to calculate the electronic properties and locate the Fermi level. The transport properties are then calculated using the BoltzTraP code. The 30 crystals are divided into two groups. The first group has four crystals with quaternary composition (A 2 BCQ 4 ) (A = Tl; B = Cd, Hg; C = Si, Ge, Sn; Q = S, Se, Te). The second group contains 26 crystals with the ternary composition (A’B’Q 2 ) (A’ = Ag, Cu, Au, Na; B’ = B, Al, Ga, In; Q = S, Se, Te). Among these 30 chalcogenide crystals, the results for 11 crystals: Tl 2 CdGeSe 4 , Tl 2 CdSnSe 4 , Tl 2 HgSiSe 4 , Tl 2 HgSnS 4 , AuBSe 2 , AuBTe 2 , AuAlTe 2 , AuGaTe 2 , AuInTe 2 , AgAlSe 2 , and AgAlTe 2 are revealed for the first time. In addition, temperature-dependent transport properties of pure and doped AgSbSe 2 and AgSbTe 2 crystals with dopant compositions of AgSb 0.94 Cd 0.06 Te 2 and AgSbTe 1.85 Se 0.15 were explored. These results provide an excellent database for bulk chalcogenides crucial for a wide range of potential applications in renewable energy fields.

High Temperature Ternary Chloride Molten Salt Pump

A ternary chloride (MgCl2-NaCl-KCl) molten salt pump has been developed to operate up to 720°C. The design is the result of a thermal, structural and material study of critical components. The vertical overhung pump incorporates first of a kind salt-wetted hydrodynamic bearings. Several bearing material pairings were tested which include: colmonoy grades, stellite grades, and a novel NiWC-based alloy (i.e. HybrimetTM NiWC3b) used as a High Velocity Oxygen Fuel (HVOF) coating. The coating withstands the corrosion effects of the molten salt, and is also used to protect a 316L stainless steel pump reservoir. The pump bowl assembly components are made of Inconel 625. A Nitrogen flushed carbon ring seal is used to keep salt vapors from interacting with external ambient air. Preliminary testing shows a promising pump design for use in the Concentrating Solar Power Gen 3 systems and sets the ground for further development of the HybrimetTM NiWC3b as a competitive alternative to available superalloys.

Silver-base ternary alloy proves superior for slip ring lead wires

Slip ring lead wires composed of ternary alloys of silver, have high electrical conductivity, a tensile strength of at least 30,000 psi, high ductility, and are solderable and weldable. An unexpected advantage of these alloys is their resistance to discoloration on heating in air.
