Tailoring the coefficient of thermal expansion of ternary nickel alloys through compositional control and non-contact measurements
The majority of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) are made of silicon, however, future applications will be used in extreme environments, especially at elevated temperatures, and require materials with enhanced properties. Use of metal alloys in these applications will require microscale manufacturability, a balance of physical and mechanical properties and dimensional stability. Here in this paper, we emphasized dimensional stability by reducing the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and present an optical non-contact method for measuring the thermal expansion of planar thin films. A combinatorial approach was employed to determine the CTE of nickel-molybdenum-tungsten (Ni-Mo-W) sputter deposited films over a range of compositions, and the addition of Mo and W is shown to significantly decrease and provide a route for tailoring the CTE with compositional control. Ni-Mo-W alloys were revealed to have CTE values ranging from 8–12 × 10 -6 /°C, matching that of commercial glass substrates that are employed in numerous MEMS devices.

One-pot ternary sequential reactions for photopatterned gradient multimaterials
Seamless multimaterial construction is a common motif in animal physiology. Such continuous mechanical gradients remain challenging to reproduce in engineered systems, as current resin chemistries typically result in a single fixed set of properties. As an alternative to single-property materials, we introduce a thiol-ene-epoxy-based photothermal reaction scheme that produces multimaterials by altering the polymer microstructure within a single resin. In this system, the photodosage during the first stage of processing dictates the extent of conversion for each subsequent reaction. As a result, our photochemistry can exhibit a diverse range of soft (Young’s modulus, E ~ 400 kPa; elongation, dL/L0 ~ 300%) and stiff (E ~ 1.6 GPa; dL/L 0 ~ 3%) mechanical properties. Furthermore, we pattern photostable and mechanically robust modulus gradients (d[E r, stiff /E r , soft] /dx > 1,000 mm -1 ) that exceed those found in squid beaks and human knee entheses. We demonstrate the ability to build intricate multimaterial architectures including a soft, wearable braille display.
Preparation of ternary hydrophobic magnetic deep eutectic solvents and an investigation into their physicochemical properties
Hydrophobic magnetic deep eutectic solvents (HMDESs) are considered a subclass of DESs comprised of a hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA), hydrogen bond donor (HBD), and a metal halide salt. These DESs can be easily manipulated by an external magnet and employed in numerous applications including liquid–liquid extractions and catalysis. In this work, a total of forty-six (46) HMDESs were prepared and their physicochemical properties studied. Six structurally unique ionic and non-ionic HBAs were combined with lanthanide and transition metal halide salts and twelve different HBDs to prepare room temperature eutectic solvents. The viscosities of HMDESs ranged from 46 centipoise (cP) to 124,600 cP at 23 °C. Their magnetic susceptibilities, studied by superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometry and a magnetic susceptibility balance, varied from 3.03 Bohr magnetons (μB) to 9.32 μB when the type of metal halide salt and its molar ratio were varied. Thermal stabilities ranged from 151.1 °C to 308.5 °C at 5% mass loss. Further, all HMDESs comprised of ionic HBA were observed to be insoluble in hexane. This study demonstrates that the physicochemical properties of HMDESs can easily be tailored by varying the DES constituents as well as their molar ratio. The structural tunability of these solvents make them highly attractive candidates for a plethora of applications ranging from extractions to electrochromic applications, where HMDESs can be easily manipulated by an external magnetic field.
