Fully Implicit Monte Carlo (FIMC) (September 2019-September 2020 Progress Report)

This research is focused on applying the NLem method to the full thermal radiative transfer (TRT) equations in the context of a Monte Carlo solution strategy. A framework has been developed for obtaining a solution to the TRT equations using the nonlinear elimination method (NLem) method. Current efforts are focused of the development and verification of the required Monte Carlo algorithm, diffusion algorithm, and material energy solver. Once all three pieces have been verified, the algorithms will then be coupled into a fully functioning method for applying NLem to the TRT equations.

SIERRA Low Mach Module: Fuego Verification Manual (V.5.0)

The SIERRA Low Mach Module: Fuego, henceforth referred to as Fuego, is the key element of the ASC fire environment simulation project. The fire environment simulation project is directed at characterizing both open large-scale pool fires and building enclosure fires. Fuego represents the turbulent, buoyantly-driven incompressible flow, heat transfer, mass transfer, combustion, soot, and absorption coefficient model portion of the simulation software. Using MPMD coupling, Scefire and Nalu handle the participating-media thermal radiation mechanics. This project is an integral part of the SIERRA multi-mechanics software development project. Fuego depends heavily upon the core architecture developments provided by SIERRA for massively parallel computing, solution adaptivity, and mechanics coupling on unstructured grids.

Transport in Stochastic Media with Random Chord Length Distributions

Thermal radiation transport computations in binary Markovian random mixtures rely almost exclusively on the Levermore-Pomraning (LP) model which is obtained by applying a heuristic closure to the ensemble averaged random medium transport equation. The validity of this model has been extensively tested by comparing numerical results over a broad parameter range (material types and mixing parameters) against benchmark solutions in planar geometry. The conditions under which the LP-model provides useful results and when it breaks down are now well established, but work to date has been largely restricted to homogeneous mixing statistics, i.e., the mean chord lengths of both materials are taken to be spatially constant. In recent work, this limitation was relaxed by allowing the mean chord lengths and, in a consistent fashion, the volume fractions in the LP-model to vary spatially and in a follow-up investigation benchmark solutions were obtained by ensemble averaging results over material realizations sampled from a nonhomogeneous Poisson process (NHPP). Numerical experiments in rod geometry with specifically linear and quadratic spatial dependence of chord lengths showed that the material averaged radiation intensities vary nonmonotonically with depth into the medium, in stark contrast to solutions obtained assuming uniform chord lengths. Moreover, depending on the local optical thickness and strength of scattering, the LP-model results showed locally more nuanced deviations from the benchmark solutions than was the case with constant chord lengths. These limited numerical investigations highlight the nontrivial qualitative and quantitative consequences of nonhomogeneous mixing statistics, in particular that closure approximations may not be uniformly valid or invalid over the problem domain.

Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) of Cable Moisture Exposure using Frequency Domain Reflectometry (FDR)

This Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) milestone report assesses the capability of frequency domain reflectometry (FDR) to determine electrical cable submergence using PNNL’s Accelerated and Real-Time Environmental Nodal Assessment (ARENA) cable/motor test bed. This work includes a review of relevant literature as well as experimental tests. Nuclear power facilities have experienced various electrical cable failures related to water exposure. The current industry response involves actions to de-water cable vaults, manholes, and other cable locations. These efforts require considerable expenditure of resources, which makes it desirable for the industry to have information on cable condition and history regarding their submergence and water exposure (Mantey 2012). Two tests that are gaining favor within the nuclear industry are time-domain reflectometry (TDR) and FDR. These are low-voltage nondestructive tests that can be applied at a cable end. Testing from the cable end is important because local inspection along the cable length is very difficult due to cables being routed within trays, conduits, underground, and through walls. Both TDR and FDR techniques have been shown to locate cable insulation damage due to thermal, radiation, and mechanical damage. FDR measurements are also more sensitive than TDR to temperature changes, low-bend radius bends, and cable contact with various materials, including conductive materials like steel and water. This work evaluates the feasibility to extend FDR testing to characterizing whether an electrical cable is submerged or not and where it may be submerged using PNNL’s ARENA cable/motor test bed.

SAM Code Development for Transient Safety Analyses of Fluoride-salt-cooled High-temperature Reactors

The System Analysis Module (SAM) is under development at Argonne National Laboratory as a modern system-level modeling and simulation tool for advanced non-light water reactor safety analyses. It utilizes the object-oriented application framework MOOSE to leverage the modern software environment and advanced numerical methods. The capabilities of SAM are being extended to enable the transient modeling, analysis, and design of various advanced nuclear reactor systems. The molten-salt-cooled pebble-bed reactor, or pebble-bed FHR (PB-FHR) is a promising candidate among advanced nuclear reactor concepts with its improved passive safety characteristics and high thermal efficiency. To support the development and utilization of the SAM code for PB-FHR safety analysis, activities on SAM code enhancements, reference plant model developments, and code validations have been performed in the past a few years to support near-term industry and NRC needs. This report summarizes recent progress under DOE-NE’s Nuclear Energy Advanced Modeling and Simulation program in SAM code development and demonstration for transient safety analysis of Fluoride-salt-cooled High-temperature Reactors. SAM capabilities has been significantly enhanced over the years to add FHR specific modeling features, including salt freezing and thawing, spherical core channel and pebble bed core modeling, solid-fluid thermal radiation, tritium transport and general species transport in fluids and solids, and the general code enhancements on solver schemes of point kinetics module and reactivity feedback models. A reference PB-FHR model is developed, based on publicly available information from Kairos Power’s generic FHR design and the University of California, Berkeley (UCB) Mk1 design. A reference reactor model is foundational to the methodologies employed by NRC to verify the adequacy of computer codes and evaluation models. The reference FHR model was utilized for a number of selected FHR design basis accidents, including station blackout, loss of heat sink, loss of flow, transient overpower, and overcooling events.
