On development of a sealed bearing for space suits

The work to correct several design deficiencies present in the bearings used in the orbital extravehicular spacesuit is reported. These deficiencies included: difficult stitch-on interface between fabric and outer race; a tendency for the clamping threads to seize; and, most importantly, the failure of the sealing surfaces (Teflon seat, Delrin seal) to maintain integrity with cycling. The first problem was corrected by raising the stitch-on holes so as to be more accessible. The seizing was eliminated by changing to a coarser thread, from 32/inch to 24/inch. The solution to the sealing problem required a materials evaluation, candidate material selection, and adhesive evaluation (for bonding the seat material to the outer race) and bench-cycling of candidate seal/seat combinations. The final configuration, successfully bench-cycled and delivered to NASA, is shown.

Electrical conductivity cell and method for fabricating the same

A flask having a threaded neck and a cap adapted for threaded engagement on the neck are used. A laminated disc between the cap and the neck forms a gas tight seal and the cap has a central opening that exposes a medial region of the disc. Piercing the disc through the opening are two electrodes, the inner ends of which contact the sample within the flask and the outer ends of which can be connected to test equipment. Cylindric glass tubes are fitted over the external portion of the electrodes to provide physical support and silicone rubber or a similar material serves to retain the glass cylinders in place and form a gas tight seal between the cylinders and the electrodes. Shrinkable tubing is shrunk over the glass tubes to afford further mechanical support and sealing. A final relatively large diameter shrinkable tube is shrunk over both electrodes and their associated glass cylinders. The support and sealing means for the electrodes is confined to a limited portion of the medial region of the disc so that the remainder of such region can be punctured by a hollow needle to introduce a test sample within the flask.

Floating nut for spacecraft application

Nut overcomes mechanical mismatch from accumulated tolerances and maintains assembly even if mounting screw loosens. Nut and screws can be painted with bonding agent to insure lock. If assemblies are removed frequently, nut and screws can be made of steel to reduce wear and tear on threads and risk of faulty threads.

The prominence-corona interface compared with the chromosphere-corona transition region

The intensities of 52 optically thin EUV emission lines formed at temperatures of 350,000 to 2.2 million K in nine hedgerow prominences observed at the limb are compared with the intensities of the same lines formed within network cells at the center of the solar disk in order to compare the prominence-corona interface (PC) with the chromosphere-corona transition region (CC). It is found for all nine prominences that the ratio of the intensity of a line measured in a cell to that in a prominence decreases with increasing temperature approximately as the -0.6 power of temperature. This ratio is used as the basis for comparing the PC with the CC in the framework of two different geometries wherein the prominence consists of one or more identical fully resolved slabs or threads in the line of sight or contains one or more identical unresolved cylindrical threads. It is concluded that three effects may contribute to the systematic difference between the PC and the CC: (1) the pressure within the PC might increase outward; (2) the temperature gradient within the PC might increase more slowly with temperature than in the CC; and (3) the unresolved internal geometry of a prominence can directly explain some, but not all, of the systematic difference.

Acoustic energy shaping

A suspended mass is shaped by melting all or a selected portion of the mass and applying acoustic energy in varying amounts to different portions of the mass. In one technique for forming an optical waveguide slug, a mass of oval section is suspended and only a portion along the middle of the cross-section is heated to a largely fluid consistency. Acoustic energy is applied to opposite edges of the oval mass to press the unheated opposite edge portions together so as to form bulges at the middle of the mass. In another technique for forming a ribbon of silicon for constructing solar cells, a cylindrical thread of silicon is drawn from a molten mass of silicon, and acoustic energy is applied to opposite sides of the molten thread to flatten it into a ribbon.

A tool for installation and removal of cylindrical baffles

Simple tool based on principle of automobile oil wrench slips over cylindrical thread-on baffle to install or remove it from baffle assembly. Tool consists of curled metal sheet brazed onto handgrip. Handgrip is adapted to be driven by wrench, ratchet, extension, torque wrench, or some other convenient tool. Clockwise twist of handgrip, tightens metal sheet around baffle to advance it into threaded joint. Counterclockwise twist loosens sheet for repositioning or tool removal.

Energetic particle precipitation into the high-latitude ionosphere and the auroral electrojets. I - Definition of electrojet boundaries using energetic electron spectra and ground-based magnetometer data

Magnetometric data are used to define the poleward and equatorward borders of the eastward electrojet in the evening sector. The relationship between central plasma sheet (cps) and boundary plasma sheet (bps) and the auroral electrojet region is explored. This relationship is used to infer the electric field configuration in the cps and bps regions. It is shown that in the evening sector the cps is threaded by field lines carrying current flowing into the ionosphere, while the bps is threaded by field lines carrying current flowing out of the ionosphere.

Spraying suspensions uniformly

With head on each of its ends, bolt can be disengaged from its blind side. Bolt has conventional hexagonal head on one end and smaller hexagonal head on its threaded end. Since reduced head is smaller than bolt diameter, it does not interfere with insertion of bolt shank in bolthole. However, it can be turned by wrench to release bolt from its blind (threaded) end. Bolt should be tethered on its large-head end so that it does not drop away from assembly.

Spacecraft automatic umbilical system

An umbilical system design is described that incorporates all the features specified for a power system to payload interconnect capability. A proof-of-concept prototype of the umbilical system was built to determine experimentally the suitability of the threading characteristics of the ram mechanism and to verify freedom from cross threading. It is concluded that Berthing systems that utilize remote manipulator systems (RMS) can be simplified by using RMS targets, closed circuit TV cameras, tie into the RMS control system, and grapple-fixture and end-effector-like capture and secure mechanisms. To effect a remotely controlled umbilical interconnect in proximity with a manned spacecraft and to provide for extravehicular activity backup and maintenance capabilities, 18 different mechanisms are found to be necessary. The weight impact of proving for maintenance capability in a large multiple connector umbilical system was found to be in the order of +60 percent.

Foldable beam

A foldable beam possessing superior qualities of light weight, compactness for transportation, quick deployment with minimum use of force, and high strength is described. These qualities are achieved through the use of a series of longitudinally rigid segments, hinged along one side and threaded by one or two cables along the opposite side. Tightening the cables holds the beam extended. Loosening the cables permits the segments to fold away from the threaded side. In one embodiment the segments are connected by canted hinges with the result that the beam may be folded in a helix-like configuration around a cylinder. In another embodiment the segments themselves may be hinged to fold flat laterally as the beam is folded, resulting in a configuration that may be helixed around a shorter cylinder.

Tapped-Hole Vent Path

Long helical vent path cools and releases hot pyrotechnical gas that exits along its spiraling threads. Current design uses 1/4-28 threads with outer diameter of stud reduced by 0.025 in. (0.62 mm). To open or close gassampler bottle, pyrotechnic charges on either one side or other of valve cylinder are actuated. Gases vented slowly over long path are cool enough to present no ignition hazard. Vent used to meter flow in refrigeration, pneumaticcontrol, and fluid-control systems by appropriately adjusting size and length of vent path.
