SIERRA Multimechanics Module: Aria Thermal Theory Manual (V.5.0)

Aria is a Galerkin finite element based program for solving coupled-physics problems described by systems of PDEs and is capable of solving nonlinear, implicit, transient and direct-to-steady state problems in two and three dimensions on parallel architectures. The suite of physics currently supported by Aria includes thermal energy transport, species transport, and electrostatics as well as generalized scalar, vector and tensor transport equations. Additionally, Aria includes support for manufacturing process flows via the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations specialized to a low Reynolds number ( Re < 1) regime. Enhanced modeling support of manufacturing processing is made possible through use of either arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) and level set based free and moving boundary tracking in conjunction with quasi-static nonlinear elastic solid mechanics for mesh control. Coupled physics problems are solved in several ways including fully-coupled Newtons method with analytic or numerical sensitivities, fully-coupled Newton-Krylov methods and a loosely-coupled nonlinear iteration about subsets of the system that are solved using combinations of the aforementioned methods. Error estimation, uniform and dynamic -adaptivity and dynamic load balancing are some of Arias more advanced capabilities.

Scalable Deposition of NiOxas a Hole Transport Layer for Perovskite Solar Cells on PET Substrates

Transition from laboratory scale fabrication to large scale perovskite fabrication processes remains a challenge. Upscaling perovskite fabrication requires the development of deposition methods that yield uniform charge transport layers at scale. By optimizing ink composition, we have developed a doped nickel oxide hole transport material for uniform large area deposition on a roll-to-roll system with a peak power conversion efficiency of 11.2%.

Self-consistent models for the X-ray emission from supernova remnants - An application to Kepler's remnant

A tool for exploring the evolution of X-ray emission from young SNRs is presented which employs a novel approach to the problem of time-dependent ionization in a shock-heated plasma. The solution of this problem is coupled to a spherically symmetric hydrodynamic calculation for the evolution of a point explosion in a uniform medium. The method is applied to Kepler's SNR, and two narrowly constrained classes of models which can simultaneously fit the spectral and morphological features of the object are found. One of these is a Sedov model in which the emission arises from shocked ambient gas, and the other is a reverse-shock model in which the SN ejecta is the dominant source of radiation. The emission from one specific model in each class is compared with the radial surface brightness profile, the 0.2-4.5 keV broadband spectrum, and the 1-3 keV moderate-resolution spectrum of the remnant. Reasonable fits are obtained in both cases.

Vacuum powder injector and method of impregnating fiber with powder

A method and apparatus uniformly impregnate stranded material with dry powder such as low solubility, high melt flow polymer powder to produce, for example, composite prepregs. The stranded material is expanded in an impregnation chamber by an influx of air so that the powder, which may enter through the same inlet as the air, penetrates to the center of the stranded material. The stranded material then is contracted for holding the powder therein. The stranded material and powder may be pulled through the impregnation chamber in the same direction by vacuum. Larger particles of powder which do not fully penetrate the stranded material may be combed into the stranded material and powder which does not impregnate the stranded material may be collected and reused.

Automating testbed documentation and database access using World Wide Web (WWW) tools

A method for providing uniform transparent access to disparate distributed information systems was demonstrated. A prototype testing interface was developed to access documentation and information using publicly available hypermedia tools. The prototype gives testers a uniform, platform-independent user interface to on-line documentation, user manuals, and mission-specific test and operations data. Mosaic was the common user interface, and HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) provided hypertext capability.
