Monitoring of Unvented Roofs with Fibrous Insulation, Diffusion Vents, and Interior Vapor Control in a Cold Climate

This research involved construction of a conditioned test hut in a cold climate (Climate Zone 5A) with multiple side-by-side instrumented roof rafter bays. This work examined seven experimental unvented roofs and one code-compliant control hybrid ccSPF-cellulose roof over three winters and following summers. Examined variables included insulation material (fiberglass and cellulose), the presence or absence of a ridge diffusion vent (vapor-open material at the roof ridge to promote drying), the effect of various interior vapor control membranes (fixed and variable permeance), the effect of interior relative humidity, and the effect of interstitial airflow (from the interior into the cavity). This experiment was run over three winters, changing variables of interior conditions, roof configurations/materials, and the addition of intentional air leakage.

Solid-State Thermodynamic Vent System (STVS) for Control of Cryogenic Propellants

A Solid-State Thermodynamic Vent System (STVS) is a novel Cryogenic Fluid Management (CFM) technology for spacecraft cryogenic propellant tanks that may reduce boiloff while providing greater control over the propellant condition. By exploiting the vacuum-induced cryocooling (VIC) potential of cryogen-saturated silica aerogel material, an internal STVS heat exchanger (HX) can expel some sacrificial cryogenic propellant to the vacuum of space to produce cooling within the storage tank. This cooling is transferred directly to the stored fluid, thereby reducing boiloff and increasing hold times. Testing proved the effectiveness of the concept by reducing the liquid nitrogen (LN 2 ) boiloff rate and tank pressure by roughly 70% and 77%, respectively, during a single pump-down cycle, which sacrificed around 1.8 kg of propellant.

A Case Study of AI-assisted Creation of a Thermodynamics Model of Precipitation Formation During Rapid Depressurization of a Vented Container

Precipitation may form in humid containers undergoing rapid depressurization. This precipitation may be liquid, i.e. fog, if the dewpoint is crossed above the freezing point of water, or direct snow crystallization if the dewpoint is crossed below the freezing point. Accurate modeling of this effect is potentially important for rapidly ascending vented containers in aircraft, spacecraft, and launch vehicles, as well as rapidly depressurizing vacuum chambers. A transient thermodynamics model of precipitation formation during the rapid depressurization of a container was developed in python. The model is written for a generic container and includes an optional water pool and water vapor source. Details of the model and results from several example cases spanning the full capabilities of the model, including a validation case, will be presented. Although the model is not novel, in contrast to prior works, this one was treated as a case study of the assistance of AI Large Language Models (LLMs) to create physical models. Impressions, performance, time, and cost of using AI for this task will be discussed.

Numerical study of multi-component flow and mixing in a scaled fission product venting system

Numerical simulation of isothermal multi-component gas flow was conducted to study fluid flow and mixing in a scaled low-pressure, low-temperature test facility for the fission product venting system (FPVS) of a gas cooled fast reactor (GFR). The geometry of FPVS test facility was an open loop including gradual expansion coupling and two 90°pipe elbows. First, the validation of large eddy simulation (LES) wall-adapting local eddy-viscosity (WALE) turbulent model was performed for transitional flow in a circular pipe with gradual expansion. The reactingFOAM solver in OpenFOAM v8 was employed. By introducing appropriate turbulence disturbance at the flow inlet, such as turbulence intensity, the numerical results showed good agreement in (1) the velocity profile downstream of the pipe expansion measured by particle image velocimetry (PIV) in this study, and (2) the reattachment length reported in the literature. Using this validated model, the numerical simulation of flow and component mixing was performed for the FPVS with an inlet flowrate corresponding to a Reynolds number of 2,400 to investigate the flow behavior and component mixing. Standard deviation of the mass fraction of component, referred to as absolute mixing index (AMI), was calculated to quantify the mixing of components, showing that the component mixing length determined by AMI is related to the reattachment length downstream of the expansion. Additionally, this study was able to identify the best location in the FPVS test facility to measure the velocity and concentration profies where multicomponent flow is well mixed.

Vented and sealed cookoff of powdered and pressed ε-CL-20

In this work, we have completed a series of vented and sealed cookoff experiments of the ε-polymorph of CL-20 in our Sandia Instrumented Thermal Ignition (SITI) apparatus using both powder and pressed pellets at nominal densities of 313 ± 8 kg/m 3 and 1030 ± 4 kg/m 3 , respectively. The boundary temperature of our aluminum confinement cylinder was ramped in 10 minutes from room temperature to a prescribed set-point temperature ranging between 448 nd 468 K and held at the set-point temperature until ignition. A universal cookoff model (UCM) has been calibrated using the ε-CL-20 SITI data to predict pressurization and thermal ignition of ε-CL-20. The ignition model was validated by using one-dimensional time-to-explosion (ODTX) ignition data from a different laboratory. We found that a thirtyfold increase in the reaction rates due to liquefaction at 520 K could explain the high temperature ODTX cookoff data. The model gives a plausible explanation of why melting is important in fast cookoff events involving CL-20. Our model also gives support to 520 K as the liquefaction point of CL-20, which has different values in the literature.

Lithium-Ion Battery Vent Gas Tools

The spreadsheets and Python scripts are used to determine vent gas hazard metrics (i.e. flammability limits, flame speed, etc.). These scripts and spreadsheets use open source literature to determine these hazard metrics. Qualification of Mitutoyo RA-2200 Roundness Tester Measuring Instrument for Clad Vent Set Cup Roundness and Flatness Inspections

Roundness (or circularity) and flatness measurements are made as part of the dimensional inspection process to certify that iridium alloy Clad Vent Set (CVS) cups meet the dimensional requirements of Iridium Alloy Cup Drawing M2D920101A005, Rev. 4 (see Figure 1). A Mahr Federal (Providence, RI) MarForm MMQ 400 Formtester is specified in the cup inspection Procedure GPHS-C-3624/25, Rev. 25 for roundness (dimension 16) and flatness (dimension 17). The Mahr Federal (Providence, RI) MarForm MMQ 400 Formtester stopped functioning in 2019. A new Mitutoyo RA-2200 Roundness Tester was purchased to replace the MMQ 400. Evaluations were conducted to qualify the new RA-2200 for CVS cup dimensional inspection work. The criterion for qualification was to ensure that the new RA-2200 instrument would yield roundness and flatness inspection results equivalent to or better than the predecessor MMQ 400 instrument.

Smart Vent System (SYSM 562 Final Project_Guest and Fleurantin)

Current residential air conditioning (AC) and heating units do a decent job at providing overall cooling/heating to a household. However, they usually fall short on accurately controlling which rooms to be heated and cooled. Most homes also require you to manually open or close a vent which can be very inconvenient if in a hard-to-reach area. There is a need for a system capable of automatically measuring and maintaining the thermal environment of each room throughout a house to meet a user’s preferences.
